“Bosco, you’ve visitors!” His mother screamed out his name from the living room downstairs.
Bosco, whom was still engrossed in his science fiction magazine, began grumbling under his breath as he got down from his bed. Looking over at the clock, he realized that it was close to midnight already. Who would visit him at such an unearthly hour? Well, Myolie Wu was the first person whom popped up in his mind. But his mother had mentioned ‘visitors’. Did Ron tag along too?
Walking down the stairs two at a time, he suddenly stopped as he frowned at the two people standing at the doorstep. He did not know these two people at all.
“Who are you?” Bosco questioned warily, as he joined his mother by her side, “Mum, why did you let strangers into our home?”
“But they said they know you, and that they’re your colleagues at the research institution.” Bosco’s mother answered in confusion.
“We’re sorry to bother you at this time, Mr. Wong, but I really wish to have a private word with you.” The petite lady spoke first.
“Now, get out of my house, before I call the cops over.” Bosco warned sternly.
“We’re not here to harm you.” The lady continued explaining. “My friend here has a medical illness, and only you can help him.”
“I’m not a doctor.” Bosco then walked over and opened the door wide. “If both of you don’t mind, I need to rest now.”
The lady wanted to persuade on, but the man with a hood over his head restrained her gently by her arm.
“Let’s go, Leila. We shan’t disturb his rest further.” He spoke in a low, chilling voice.
Bosco then slammed the door shut after they left. Turning towards his mother, he repeatedly reminded her of the dangers of allowing unknown strangers into their home. But Bosco’s mother defended herself by saying that the lady looked genuinely sincere.

“Gosh, I can’t believe he just threw us out like that!” Leila threw her arms up in the air in frustration. “To think how the article had described this rising star as amiable and helpful.” She rolled her eyes at the piece of paper in her hands.
Raymond smiled faintly at Leila’s outburst, “There’s always tomorrow to look forward to, Leila.”
Leila looked around the quiet neighborhood, “But what are we going to do now?”
“We’ll approach him again in the morning.” Raymond said. “For now, I guess you’re tired. We shall look for a place to rest first.”
They found a park nearby, and decided to spend the night there. They did not have much spare cash on them, and after spending most of their savings on purchasing an air ticket for Leila to fly over to New York, they could only be more stringent on their spending. While Leila laid down on a bench and soon fell asleep, Raymond took off his coat and placed it over her, ensuring that she had sufficient warmth. He had promised her grandmother, Leila’s only family left, that he would take good care of her, and he was determined to make good his word.
Raymond stood under a lamp-post and leaned against it. In the serenity of the night, his mind began drifting off to the thoughts of re-meeting Myolie. He realized that she had not changed much. Instead, he was entirely different from his past self now. All around him was darkness so frightening and bitter that it permeated every part of him. Gazing down at his elongated shadow on the ground, he could feel the unknown being watching and monitoring his every move and thought. Despite being used to it already, Raymond still did not like his feelings for Myolie being exposed to this power – he had feared that the power might used this weakness and made him succumb under his control. He was not going to let that happen, for as long as he lived. He was not going to let himself near Myolie again – and he was determined to stick to that as well.

[Forest]
Ron flashed his badge as he treaded into the restricted area which was being cordoned off, after a group of trekkers had found human bones in a part of this forest early this morning.
“Ron, let me introduce. This is Damien Lau. He’s in charge of this case, and he wished to speak to you regarding a wanted fugitive of the States.” Ron’s superior said.
Ron nodded as he shared a firm handshake with Damien. He had long heard of Damien’s reputation in FBI – strict, demanding, and efficient. Damien had helped the bureau crack many major cases, and tracked down and arrested many fugitives across the waters. It had always been Ron’s dream to be able to work with this experienced police officer.
“May I share some private words with you, Agent Ng?” Damien politely asked.
“Sure, and just call me ‘Ron’.” Ron answered, as they stepped aside where there were fewer distractions.
Damien retrieved a piece of paper from his file and showed it to Ron, “I received this email notification some hours ago on my computer. It stated that it was you whom made this report about the re-appearance of Raymond Lam in New York City. Is that true?”
Ron nodded.
“May I know the source of your information, Ron?” Damien asked, preparing to jot down some notes on his notebook. “Is it reliable?”
Ron hesitated in revealing Myolie’s involvement out. After all, she had no idea that the FBI was actually monitoring her closely for the first few years after Raymond’s mysterious disappearance, before Ron had stepped in and proved that Myolie was not implicated in this case, and she was given the ‘all clear’ signal. Now, he was reluctant to drag her into this mess again, since he already felt guilty for hiding so many secrets from her.
“I hope to keep it anonymous, Damien.” Ron stated. “I can assure you that my source has nothing to do with the fugitive.”
“I heard that the fugitive used to be your best friend. Both of you grew up together in the orphanage, am I right?” Damien narrowed his gaze on Ron, which made him feel uncomfortable.
Ron nodded, feeling that there was nothing suspicious to hide about his relationship with Raymond. “Yes, we’re best friends. If he’s really still alive today, he still remains as my best friend. But I don’t mix up personal matters with business. I’ll bring him in if I ever find him again.”
Damien seemed to be thinking hard for a moment before accepting Ron’s explanation. “I’ve sent some officers to patrol the area. Hopefully, we can receive some good news soon.” He then led Ron nearer towards the crime scene as he continued speaking, “The main reason I’ve asked you here is to show you something special.”
Ron suddenly stopped in his track as his eyes landed upon the pile of human bones and a pool of pale green slime surrounding it. It was quite a gross scene with a stench hanging around it.
“Don’t you find this familiar, Ron?” Damien questioned.
Ron nodded his head grimly. The entire family of the deceased plastic surgeon had died in this manner. There was nothing but bones and green slime left at the crime scene. That scene had remained so deeply etched in his memories that he even had nightmares of them for a number of consecutive nights.
“What’s your take, Dr. Noah?” Damien asked the coroner.
Dr. Noah frowned hard as he answered, “Well, this looks like the work of a cannibal. But I’ve yet to figure out what this green slime is. I need to perform some tests on it first.”
“Thanks, Dr. Noah. I’ll be waiting for your report then.” Damien said, before looking over to Ron. “I don’t know how much of this is actually a coincidence. But the re-appearance of Raymond Lam doesn’t spell anything good now.”

[Research Laboratory]
It was not difficult for him to sneak into the building and infiltrate among the lab scientists and researchers as he camouflaged himself under a lab coat and a pair of thick glasses. After all, he used to be like one of them too. A few hours ago, he had already studied the floor plan of the entire building, and everything was recorded in his memory bank and playing out like a computer. He had arranged his companion to carry out the other task – their second mission on the list, as it was less risky for her.
“Room B…” He murmured under his breath.
He strolled down the corridor hastily, walking past room after room. All these seemed so familiar to him. Finally, he found the room and entered into it. It was quite small in size, and there were barely equipments in here. The room was filled with many cages of white mice and some operating tables. He stood there and looked around, searching for his target, but the person was nowhere to be seen. Just then, he saw another door in the room, and thought that it might lead him to another connecting room, and decided to check it out. At that moment, the door opened and someone stepped out. He had no chance to hide himself at all.
“Bosco, where did you-…” An extremely familiar voice filled the entire room, as it rang continually in his ears.
She sensed the presence of another person, and looked up from the file in her hands. Her eyes widened in disbelief and surprise, as her gaze got more intense. Neither of them spoke a word at all. It was real – the feelings within them were so real. Slowly, the file slipped out of her hands, falling onto the ground, but that did not distract either of them. In a split second, she had run towards him and sprung her arms out, wrapping them around him as tightly as she could. However, he was too taken aback to have any response. He merely stood there as his mind was sent into a frenzy.
“Raymond…” Myolie cried out softly as she caressed his hair so affectionately in the embrace. “I miss you, Ray…Ray…”
Raymond’s heart clenched at the soft call of Myolie’s voice which somehow drove him back to reality. Then he felt it – she pulled back from his body and cupped his face in her small hands. That tender touch and gaze from Myolie were cutting him soul-deep, but somehow it still steadied him and jerked him back from the edge of uncertainty and panic.
“Myo.” He finally spoke for the first time as he instinctively pulled her back into his arms, and this time, he held onto her tighter than ever. Raymond allowed the scent of Myolie settle his emotions down even more. He realized that this was what he had needed – someone to balance out the turmoil and insanity within himself.
Just then, the door behind Raymond flew open. Both of them separated immediately, as Raymond spun around quickly to check the intruder, before he recognized the young man standing before him – his target.
“Is there something which I’m missing out over here?” Bosco questioned, before frowning at Raymond. “And what are you doing here?”
Myolie stepped forward and pulled Bosco into the room, before closing the door shut. She did not know why, but the fact that Raymond returning to life was certainly abnormal, and she was not ready to let anyone discovered it. She did not wish to lose him again.
“Myolie, can you explain this? Did you send this dude here to my home late last night?” Bosco asked.
“Bosco, I…” Myolie began speaking.
However, Raymond interrupted her, preferring to do the explanation himself instead.
“No, that had nothing to do with Myolie.” Raymond said, before turning to look at her. “Neither did I expect myself to see her again.”
Myolie reached out and grasped onto his hand. Somehow, she felt something different about Raymond – he was no longer that confident man whom carried a little arrogance and pride in himself. He looked as if many troubles were weighing upon him, making him look more haggard and rough. The thought of this pained her a lot – what had he suffered through all these years? Why did he not contact her at all? Many questions and doubts shot through her mind.
Bosco saw how Myolie was holding onto Raymond’s hand and had guessed that their relationship was not that simple after all. “Alright…what do you want with me then?”
“I need your help.” Raymond answered, before adding on gravely. “Badly.”

[Ruben’s Street]
Raymond peeped out from behind the curtains, checking if there were any suspicious figures who might trail them to Bosco’s home.
“Don’t worry, Raymond.” Bosco said. “We’re completely safe here.”
Myolie went over to Raymond and patted on his back gently, “Bosco’s a very cautious person.”
Raymond then seemed to relax a little, as he and Myolie joined Bosco and Leila whom were sitting on the floor.
“Alright, before we get to the main topic, I think I ought to know about some stuff.” Bosco stared over at Raymond and Myolie whom were interlocking their hands together even though they were seated.
“It’s a long story, Bosco.” Myolie answered. “We get down to serious business first.”
“Yeah in other words, mind your own business, Mr. Wong.” Leila stuck her tongue out at him.
Bosco rolled his eyes at Leila and snapped back, “I wasn’t even asking you, little girl.”
“I’m not little.” Leila retorted, crossing her arms in annoyance – she hated people whom mocked about her size.
“Stop it, Bosco.” Myolie shot him a fierce glare when he attempted to rebut Leila again. She then turned to Raymond and asked, “Ray, do you wish to start first?”
Raymond nodded as Leila retrieved the article and placed it before everyone, “I believe you wrote this about a few months ago for a magazine column. It’s about your opinion on the neuropsychiatric research, especially the split personality disorder.”
“Oh yes, I did…” Bosco said, before shaking his head. “No…I mean, my idea got rebutted and banned a few days later.”
Raymond’s face got closer towards Bosco as he spoke, “You’re actually on the right track, Bosco. This disorder is reversible – getting rid of your other ‘personality’.”
“No…no…I mean, someone proved it to me that it’s not.” Bosco explained.
“Who did it?” Myolie questioned.
“Sammul. Sammul Chan.” Bosco said. “He was lecturing me on how my imagination was so wild and fertile. He told me how my theory and deductions were wrong, and would not work in reality.”
Raymond began sneering, “Sammul Chan’s words can’t be trusted.”
Bosco shrugged his shoulders, “Well, I haven’t really put my thesis into practice, so I’m not sure myself as well.”
Raymond then proposed a daring suggestion. He wanted Bosco to use that theory and experiment it on him. He was willing to bear all risks and consequences. Myolie stared at Raymond, feeling confused and worried.
“I’m not confident about this, Raymond. And I’m dead serious.” Bosco warned, looking stern.
Leila seemed to agree with Bosco as she persuaded, “Ray, I think we should think over about it.”
However, Raymond was adamant in his stand. He insisted that they would carry out this experiment tomorrow night. Looking over at Myolie for some support, Raymond felt relieved when she smiled and nodded her head to show her approval. As they would need some sophisticated equipment for the experiment, Myolie had told them she had kept some of these machines in her home, and Raymond decided to accompany her back home to retrieve them over to Bosco’s home.
“Stay here with Bosco, Leila. It’s safer.” Raymond said. “By the way, did you find out anything about that man?”
“I checked on his grandfather as you told me. But the old man’s now senile and living in a hospice. I doubt he can provide any useful information.” Leila reported.
Raymond nodded grimly, “I expected it somehow. Never mind, I’m still confident about my own conjecture though.”
Leila then patted on his shoulder, “Don’t worry, you’ll be fine.”
Raymond smiled. At that moment, he caught sight of Myolie standing at a far corner watching them, and realized that she had seen how Leila was acting so naturally around him. Silently, she turned around and headed out of Bosco’s home. Raymond bade a quick farewell to Leila, before hurrying out to join Myolie.

[Berry’s Avenue]
Ron had wanted to look Myolie up at the research institution, but the people there had told him that she had taken leave and left already. Feeling worried for her, Ron decided to head over to her home and check on her. But alas, she was not in either, and her phone calls were all directed to her voicemail. After waiting for a couple of hours, Ron realized that he could no longer wait since he had important tasks to do at the station. Getting into his car, he began to drive out of the neighborhood. Just then, he looked up at the rear-view mirror and caught sight of Myolie’s car driving into the garage. Reversing his car carefully, Ron suddenly stopped as he frowned at the mirror. In order to be certain that he had not seen anything wrongly, he turned his head back and checked again.
No, he was damn right – there was another person entering the house after Myolie.
And the person was none other than his best friend, Raymond Lam.
Ron felt his heart almost skipping a beat. His cop instinct had him whipped out his cell phone, preparing to dial Damien’s number, and he was certain that within the next few minutes, this place would be swarming with FBI agents, ready to take Raymond down. However, his conscience and emotional side got him to think otherwise.
What should he do?
