Chapter 7

Acceptance

[FBI Headquarters]

“So do we have the results on the green slime yet, Dr. Noah?” Damien asked after both men entered into the autopsy room.

Dr. Noah nodded and removed his gloves, before reaching for a file on a desk and passed it to Damien.

“I checked it against the murder case around four years ago – the one which Agent Ng had been investigating about the escaped mental patient and his suspected relation with the plastic surgeon.” Dr. Noah explained. “The green slime seems to have a life of its own, although I highly suspect that it might be a parasite – a living thing. Throughout our records, it’s known that there are a few harmless living things which can leech onto our human body for survival, but this green slime has actually proven that this parasite might be even stronger than the others, and could potentially harm the host – that is the human being. There are some DNA particles in the green slime belonging to a human being, and no, it doesn’t belong to the victim.”

“Then is it the mental patient?” Ron asked.

Dr. Noah nodded, “Yes, just like the green slime found at the crime scene of the murder case, the DNA particles all belong to the mental patient who’s missing on the FBI wanted list.”

“So that means the mental patient is here in New York, and he is starting his own killing spree?” Damien concluded. “What about the bloodstains I found at the abandoned factory?”

“Abandoned factory?” Ron frowned.

Damien explained, “The furniture factory is located a few hundred meters away from the forested area. My subordinates chanced upon it while searching around for more evidences. In that factory, we found a badly-charred nylon rope and a few bloodstains around it.”

“No fingerprints can be found on the rope unfortunately. But an interesting find is that the bloodstains contain almost the same DNA structure as the particles found in the green slime.” Dr. Noah said.

“What does it mean by that, Dr. Noah?” Ron asked.

“Either it’s two closely-related people, or…the rather impossible conclusion, but given this case scenario, it won’t sound bizarre…the erratic genetic change in a person. It’s not completely impossible since it can be scientifically proven that human beings can have DNA mutations during their course of life, but this is just too…I haven’t seen it before.” Dr. Noah replied.

Both Damien and Ron expressed their thanks to Dr. Noah, before taking the file and exited the autopsy room. Ron was still looking pretty perplexed over the findings, but Damien seemed to be the calmer one.

“What’s your take on it, Damien?” Ron could not help but ask.

Damien grinned as he led Ron into the office before showing him a clear plastic bag, “This is our most important piece of evidence.”

Ron frowned as he took it over and examined it on a closer look, “It’s a badge pass! Sammul Chan…”

“After we discovered the abandoned furniture factory, I was determined that there might be more evidences lying around and expanded the search scope wider, and one of the officers found this badge along the path leading to the factory.” Damien explained.

“So you mean Sammul Chan is the culprit?” Ron questioned. “But he’s a…”

Damien shook his head, “Perhaps not. I’ve checked his background, and he’s completely clean. He could have passed by the area before, that’s why I’m planning to make a trip down to the research institution later on. Care to come along?”

“Sure…” Ron answered, as he kept his gaze fixed upon the badge pass. Somehow, the familiarity of Sammul Chan hit him again, just like the first time he saw him back at New Orleans. “Damien, I need to check up something first.”

“What is it?” Damien asked, after he noticed the slight change in expression on Ron.

Ron shrugged, “I don’t know, but I guess it has something to do with the connection between Sammul Chan and the mental patient.”

“What do you mean?” Damien tried to confirm again.

“Let’s make a trip down to the classified library. Perhaps you can help me where I’m lost at.” Ron suggested.

Damien agreed as they hurried towards their destination. Both of them knew that they could not afford to lose any time, if not they might lose any important leads in this case.

“By the way, Raymond Lam’s back with his ex-fiancée.” Ron revealed at last.

“What? When was it? Is she the source you were referring to?” Damien questioned sternly.

“Since last night.” Ron replied. “But I don’t think Raymond’s involved in this case.”

“Even though he might not be involved, he’s still a fugitive, and we need to arrest him back before he becomes a threat like this mental patient.” Damien reprimanded. “You know it, Ron. You can’t let him off. Promise me that you’ll not mix up personal affairs with business here, if not I’ve no choice but to take you off the case.”

Ron looked over at Damien with a serious expression, “Don’t worry, I’ll definitely take Raymond in if I catch him the next time.”

Damien then proceeded to punch some numbers on his cell phone as he issued orders for his subordinates to stake out at Myolie’s home and workplace. If they caught sight of Raymond, they were to report to him first before taking any action. Ron stood by the side, trying to convince himself that he had made the right decision. It was for the good of everybody.

[Research Laboratory Room]

“Come on in.” Myolie said.

Raymond entered after her, as she locked the door after that. Soon, both of them were off preparing the various equipments while waiting for Bosco and Leila to arrive. Myolie could sense the anxiety in the air as she herself tried to remain composed. Looking over at Raymond, he was just like his old self – moving about with purpose and confidence. She began wondering what would become of them now, should none of those things occur back then. Suddenly, a loud clank sound jolted her out from her deep thought. Raymond was on his knees, seemingly in extreme agony. Rushing over to his side immediately, Myolie tried to check on him, but instead, he accidentally cut her forearm with the operating knife in his hand.

“Ray, look at me!” Myolie urged as she watched his face going into an intense red while his body shook greatly. “It’s okay. Just take in deep breaths slowly.”

“No use listening to her rubbish, Raymond.” The voice spoke in his head as Raymond struggled to find the inner peace like before. “I’m warning you – if you don’t embrace me any sooner, both of you will be in grave danger.”

“Go away first.” Raymond shouted out loud in his mind to the voice, so that Myolie would be unable to hear it.

Myolie continued to calm Raymond down, and it seemed to have succeeded as he stopped trembling and was taking in deep breaths as usual. His eyes expressed deep concern over the cut on her forearm, as his hand slowly moved up to examine the wound.

“I’m fine.” Myolie did not wish for Raymond to feel guilty over it so she deliberately took her arm away from him. “Are you feeling any better?”

Raymond nodded and apologized as well, “I’m sorry.”

Myolie smiled as she kissed on his forehead, “It’s just a small cut. Don’t apologize over this, okay?” With that, she supported Raymond up onto a chair, before saying that she needed to dress up her wound over at the connecting room.

Raymond grabbed her by the hand as he gazed fondly into her eyes, “Do you trust me, Myo?”

Myolie felt weird at his question, but she still nodded.

“Nothing matters to me more than your safety.” Raymond said. “You’ll always be the most important person in my heart.”

Myolie smiled and caressed his cheek gently, “You too.” She did not know why Raymond was being a little emotional suddenly.

With that, she entered the connecting room to get her wound attended, having no suspicion or doubt over Raymond’s words at all.

“I’m going to get Raymond to kick your ass, if you don’t shut up now, Bosco Wong.” Leila snarled.

Bosco wanted to retort but thought the better of it. Soon, it would be time for serious matters. Retrieving a thick pile of documents from his backpack, Bosco flipped through to ensure that every detail of the concoction of the antidote was inside. Even a slightest mistake could have adverse effects on the user. Leila saw the serious expression on Bosco’s face, and could not help but got worried too.

“Will Raymond be fine?” She asked in a soft whisper.

“I hope so.” Bosco let out a heavy sigh.

Both of them then found the designated laboratory room and had the intention of knocking on the door since Myolie had informed them earlier on that the door would be locked first for safety reasons. However, the door remained slightly ajar, as they walked into the room with extreme caution. There was nobody in there, right until Myolie emerged from the connecting room.

“Did Raymond let you guys in?” Myolie casually asked.

Bosco shook his head, “The door was unlocked already when we came.”

And then, there was an uneasy moment of dead silence.

“Where’s Raymond?” Leila finally took up the courage and asked this question.
============================================================
“I recognize him, and he recognizes me as well. We’re of the same species, and thus there is this natural attraction towards each other. However, both of us also know that only one between two of us can survive. He will want to get rid of me desperately, and so do I. I can assure you that he’s on his way to hunt us down and defeat us, so you must not be near any human beings during this moment, or else, there may be risks of infection.”

“How do I trust your words? You’ve been trying to overcome me all these years.”

“If you ever die, I won’t survive either. It’s all mutual. If you embrace me, I can bring you unimaginable powers to fight him back. Trust me Raymond, although he’s the primary source of infection, his host isn’t a willing party in giving the body as a protective shield to him. On the other hand, if you’re of a willing party, we can merge as one and the powers can be more effectively executed. But then, don’t attempt to get rid of me after you’ve accomplished what you wanted. I can give you heaven, but I can likewise drag you down to hell with me.”

“What are the consequences I’ve to bear?”

It was a long pause of silence.

“Loneliness – you’ll only have me as your only companion for the rest of your life.”

These were the words which he had been told back in the laboratory room.

[FBI Headquarters Library]

Ron sat there browsing through the case files quickly. Looking at the mental patient and Sammul Chan, he tried to figure out the connection between both of them, but nothing came to his mind. Instead, he felt that the reason he thought Sammul looked familiar was not exactly because of the mental patient. Getting frustrated at being nowhere, Ron began to randomly click on the links on the page, until a picture popped out straight into his face. He stopped whatever he was doing immediately, and suddenly seemed to get the big picture. Scribbling down some notes, he hastily made his way out of the library since electronic devices were disallowed within the area. Once outside, Ron whipped out his cell phone to contact Damien Lau. Within three rings, the FBI officer picked up the phone.

“Sammul Chan’s our target.” Ron was breathing very rapidly as he was getting all excited.

“Why do you say so?” Damien questioned.

“All along, I did not understand why the mental patient’s plastic surgeon had part of his face skin surgically removed. I mean, the mental patient had already burned the entire corpse, so what’s the use for that? Right until I saw the original picture of the plastic surgeon again, did I realize why Sammul Chan always had this familiar look on me.” Ron said.

Damien thought for a moment, “Sammul took the facial skin of the plastic surgeon and used it on himself.”

Soon, both men ended the conversation. They arranged to meet at the research institution building where all questions could be answered over there.

[Research Institution Building]

Raymond found an empty Gents toilet and made sure that the door was locked. Standing before the long mirror, he stared at his reflection in there.

“How do I embrace you?” Raymond was doubtful.

“All you have to do is relax yourself. Do not put up any struggle against me.” The voice answered.

In an instant second, Raymond felt the surroundings spinning rapidly as he tried to catch hold of something to maintain his balance, but everything just slipped out of his hands as he fell onto the ground. He felt as if every one of his organs were burning intensely, as his senses suddenly became amplified and more sensitive during the mutation. He could also feel his bones growing at an abnormal rate, yet his body did not seem to be changing much at all.

“The final part is going to be the worst.”

No longer after the warning, Raymond felt his brain being compressed tightly as he found his darkest secrets and fondest memories being integrated and bounded with the parasite living within his mind. He watched as his parents died in that tragic fire…His childhood days spent in the orphanage being bullied by bigger-sized children…His graduation ceremony with his best friend…His engagement party with his fiancée…

Kicking against the floor as Raymond started to feel nauseous, he rushed into a cubicle and threw up everything which he had eaten in the morning. He felt weak and uncomfortable. The dizziness soon went away, as he climbed back up to his feet and looked into the mirror.

He’s completely different now.

“I am you, and you are me.” Raymond spoke to himself.

Raymond knew that there was no time to waste anymore. He could almost feel Sammul Chan hunting down his whereabouts. He allowed his own senses to lead him over to his nemesis. Soon enough, either one of them would be able to live on.

“How’s it going, Bosco?” Myolie asked.

“Still a couple more chemicals.” Bosco answered.

Having no more patience, Myolie instructed Bosco to carry on concocting the antidote, while she decided to look around for Raymond. His words earlier on gave her a bad feeling. Leila offered to join in the search, but seeing that Bosco might need assistance, Myolie had to do it alone.
============================================================
She started the search from the top level. Every level she went down, she found the hope diminishing before her. While she was in one of the rooms, she heard the door suddenly opening.

“Dr. Wu.” A familiar voice called her.

Turning around, she greeted with a weary smile, “Sammul, what’s up?”

“Where’s the guy whom was with you in the elevator earlier on?” Sammul asked.

Myolie frowned at Sammul, “I’ve never told you that I was together with that guy.”

Sammul grinned, “My apologies, it’s just my assumption again. Never mind, we’ll talk again.”

“Why are you looking for him anyway?” Myolie tried to pry.

“To play a cat-and-mouse game.” Sammul smirked.

Myolie did not exactly like the expression on Sammul’s face now, and quickly made an excuse to walk out of the room, but he caught her by the arm and pulled her back in, and before she could scream out, he used a towel filled with chloroform and pressed it upon her nose, and soon after, she collapsed in his arms unconscious.
