“Going out again?”
Adam frowned at his sister’s silly question. “I’m going out with Trish tonight. I might not come home…” Adam grinned lustily as he pictured how Trish had looked in the net-and-lace tiny dress last weekend. As well as how she would look like out of it.
“I would’ve say be careful of STD but you wouldn’t listen the last gazillion times I’ve reminded you before.”
“Stop being such a smart-aleck, Angel, and start bringing your quote-sweet-unquote boyfriend home so I could start with my thorough body check on him.”
“What?” Angel scoffed, taking her eyes off the fashion magazine she was reading. “You’re afraid that he’s just like you? I’m not that stupid, Ads…”
“Good,” Adam nodded, starting towards the front door.
“You know…Eve’s gonna be back next Saturday…”
Adam scowled, stopping in his tracks and turned to face her. “So?” It’s not like Adam hadn’t known about it already. Not like he hasn’t had it etched in his mind or stored in his Palm Pilot or written on his calendar or had his secretary memorized and remind him about it every two hours once Friday comes. Not like he wasn’t so excited about it that he’s going to have to cancel all of his hot dates on that particular weekend to get himself prepared. Prepared for what?
“You know, she can take one look at you and know that you’ve been excessively had sex with countless different women.”
“So?” Adam’s voice was suddenly shaky.
Angel smirked and shrugged. “It’s your head.”
“You’re being melodramatic, Angel. Eve wouldn’t have the heart to hurt me. Besides, even if she wants to, she can’t lay a finger on me. I mean, what can she do?”
“Yeah…” Angel beamed. “Keep telling yourself that.”
Adam stifled a shiver as Angel got back to her Vogue. “I’m going to do that…” he mumbled under his breath.
---
“Wouldn’t you like to come in for a coffee?” Trish purred, flirting with the edge of Adam’s neck chain.
Coffee? They just got back from the coffee house uptown. It was an absurd suggestion, despite the fact that Adam had been waiting to hear it ever since he laid his eyes on Trish’s endless bare legs at a friend’s party last weekend. But for some reason, he wasn’t in the mood to…get personal tonight. The reason? Adam couldn’t believe it himself.
“Adam? Adam?” Trish waved her French manicured hand before his glazed eyes.
Adam blinked, refocused and tried to pay attention to the beautiful, willing woman in front of him but all he could see and hear was the adorable pouty face of his childhood friend saying things, like, “You’re going to die a lonely man when you realized you’ve dated and dumped all female population around the globe.”
“Yoo hoo!” came a different, somewhat more disturbing voice. “Adam! Are you listening?!”
Adam grinned sheepishly. “Sorry. Not tonight, Trish…”
Trish extended her heavily glossed lips into a pout. “Fine…” she murmured.
Adam was about to turn around and leave for his warm, cozy bed at home when Trish grabbed him around his neck and pulled his lips onto hers ruthlessly. She was gripping his head with her ten claws and Adam was practically choking. Only when he felt like she had sucked his entire entity out of his body did she finally let go. Jeez—talk about putting out.
---
Angel was deep in conversation on the phone when Adam was finally safe home.
“Talking to your imaginary boyfriend again?” he spoke loud enough for the person on the other line to hear.
Angel murmured something into the receiver and hung up. “He’s not imaginary!”
“I call anybody who doesn’t have a name imaginary. So sue me!”
Angel sighed dejectedly. “I thought you’re not coming home tonight?”
Adam nearly scowled. “Plan canceled. I wasn’t in the mood…” he grumbled.
“You? Not in the mood? Now that’s unbelievable!” Angel laughed.
“What? I can’t have emotional conflicts on my time of the month?” he ribbed.
“You don’t have emotions, period,” Angel pointed out. “By the way, good news…”
“What? You’re getting married and left me no worries?”
“Not today. But glad to find out your sentiments regarding your only sister…” she grinned phonily. “Eve’s flying in a little early,” her voice turned serious.
“How early?” he furrowed his brows.
“The day after tomorrow…” she sang out, glad to torture Adam’s nerves.
“What?!”
“If you’re unavailable I can always fetch her for you. Her flight landed at eight. I can take my boyfriend with me…”
“So you’re saying that you’d rather Eve sees your boyfriend first than me, your only brother?”
“That’s because she won’t act all superficial and judgmental in front of him. Plus, she’s not the first one…” Angel shrugged innocently and got up from her seat near the window.
“You’ve introduced him to someone already?! Who?!”
“Just…D…and her boyfriend…”
“Matt met him before me?!”
“Yeah but don’t even think about gathering information from him or something, though. The guy’s lips are sealed.”
“Lips sealed? Yeah. We’ll see about that…” Adam smirked.
---
“Watch me…” Will snickered, swigging the bottle of Budweiser in his hand.
“Hello…” a lady’s voice interrupted the guys.
“What is she doing here?” Adam groaned.
“Nice to see you too, Ads…” Dawne beamed phonily.
“Angel warned me that you might try to break me open about her secret boyfriend by pushing a girl my way so I asked Dawne to come along…” Matt grinned shrewdly.
“Gosh! You really ARE a mad genius!”
“Hey—my boyfriend isn’t a brain surgeon for nothing, okay?” Dawne claimed proudly.
“Sure. Whatever…” Adam seemed distracted. “Whoa…will you just take a look at that babe over there?” he pointed in direction of the entrance.
“Will you stop checking out girls? Angel told me Eve’s coming back next week.”
Adam scowled. “Why is everyone asking me to stop being myself for the sake of her homecoming?”
“Because…from the way you speak of her, it sounds like you truly love her…” Matt simply shrugged.
“I don’t love Eve!”
“Hold up, hold up. Who’s Eve?” Will didn’t wish to be left out.
“The girl he used to talk about all the time in college…” Matt explained.
“Oh? The tomboy? Yeah…you are so in love with her…” Will nodded.
“I’m not! But anyways, can any of you guys come with me to the airport tomorrow night?”
“She’s going to be home earlier than planned? Aww…you must be so happy…” Matt teased, making cute faces.
“I’m not happy neither am I sad, okay? She’s just a best friend! Not more than that, okay?!”
“Fine, fine…Cool it, Ads…I don’t have any surgery tomorrow. I’ll come with you…” Matt offered.
“What? It’s your only day off this month. I thought you’re spending it with me…” Dawne whined, tugging at Matt’s sleeve.
“Jesus, D. Just give him a break, would you?” Adam snorted, earning him a glare from her. “Fine…you can come along…”
Adam knew the minute he gave in that it’d be a long, long night for him tomorrow.
---
“Is she here yet?” Dawne asked excitedly.
“She wouldn’t if she could hear your whiny voice…” Adam mumbled under his breath.
“Hey! I heard that!” Dawne poked him in his forearm.
“Would you tell me what she looks like? I can check it out for you,” Matt wisely meddled in.
“Haven’t you got any pictures of her?” Dawne once again butt in.
“Just of us when we were kids. I doubt she still looks like that now. She avoided cameras like a plague once she stepped into her ‘tomboy era’.”
“Well, what do you suggest she’d look like now? ‘Cause everyone’s filing out of the gate right now…” Matt observed.
“Just look out for girls with short hair, boys’ clothes and chewing some gum.”
“You don’t think she’d look exactly like that, do you?” Dawne scoffed.
“You clearly don’t know Eve.”
“Hey, hey—Ads! Is that cute girl over there looking at you?” Matt tapped Adam’s shoulder and pointed to a beauty not far from them.
Adam looked. “Huh. Pretty girls looking at me. That’s old news.”
“You are such a conceited pig, you know that?” Dawne commented.
“Hey, Ads…I don’t see any tomboys out there…” Matt trailed off.
The beautiful girl was standing right before them. Particularly Adam.
“Conceited pig? I knew something wouldn’t change…” she smiled.
Adam missed that smile. So bad that he was stunned beyond words.
“Anyone called for a tomboy?” she asked.
Still, silence. Adam was still stunned, Matt and Dawne were just baffled.
“E…Eve?” finally, Adam stuttered.
“Hi, stranger…” the girl grinned gladly.
“Whoa, mama…” Adam blurted, drinking in her appearance. Obviously, she was past her ‘tomboy era’. Her used-to-be short, cropped hair was flowing gently beyond her shoulders. Her face was made up softly, with a little mascara, eye shadow and lightly glossed lips. Her tight-fitting sweater and hip-hugging jeans showed off her graceful figure. The figure that used to be hidden beneath baggy slacks and loose button down shirts.
“I take it from that that you’re missing me?” Eve giggled, her voice like wind chimes to Adam’s ears. She startled him when she ran into his arms and hugged him tightly, still as strong as before.
When she released him, Adam was gulping. He definitely felt something while they were hugging. He waved it off, confirming that he just misses her too much. “Oh. This is my buddy from college, Matt. And this is his girlfriend, Dawne.”
Eve waved warmly at Matt and immediately turned to Dawne. “Hi! You can call me D!” they instantly dug each other, Eve hugging Dawne as if they’ve known each other for long.
Adam was aware of Eve’s friendliness but it was unbelievable how they could bond that swiftly. While Eve was yapping away with Dawne, Matt pulled Adam aside.
“I thought you said she’s a tomboy…” he whispered.
Adam gnawed at his lower lip. “I guess she changed.” Big time—he added in his mind.
