“Thanks for having me here, Ads…”
Adam smiled up to the girl donning a cute striped pajama in front of him. At least she still sleeps in her pj’s…Adam knocked himself mentally for even thinking of that—of her.
“So where’s my beloved Angel?”
“Out with her secret boyfriend…” Adam sighed, heaving the heavy box labeled magazines off the old study desk.
Eve raised an eyebrow. “You let her date now?”
“I’m not that big of a tyrant am I?”
“Try hopeless…” Eve grinned. “Anyways, who’s the lucky guy?”
“I don’t know. She wouldn’t let me know,” Adam shrugged.
“Wow. You’re taking this much easier than I thought. Let me guess…you’re way too busy handling your tons of girlfriends to be bothered?”
“I’ve changed, you know?” Adam cringed at his own attempt to lie.
“Yeah, right. And pigs can fly…” Eve scoffed.
“You changed,” Adam pointed out.
“What? You mean the hair?”
“The hair, the makeup, the clothes, the walk…”
“So I was right; you WERE checking me out at the airport…” Eve grinned impishly, squinting her eyes while Adam squirmed.
“Stop joshing around, Eve…” he chuckled nervously.
“Let’s just say…I’m taking someone’s suggestions to heart…” she smiled almost secretly, looking bashful all of a sudden.
“You…seeing this someone?”
“What? You’re going to check him out like the thousands of your sister’s past boyfriends?” she teased. “You’re controlling me now?”
“I wouldn’t dare…” he smiled phonily.
“You sure you want to hear about him?”
Him?—Adam thought—So it’s really a guy?
“Yeah. How do you except me to offer him my deepest sympathy if I don’t know him?”
Eve grinned at Adam’s remark. She walked over to the study desk Adam had just cleared and hopped onto it, beaming ear-to-ear.
“Ah…Mike…What can I say?” she purred. “Tall, handsome, sweet, smart, romantic…the list just goes on and on and on…”
“That perfect?” Adam cocked an eyebrow dubiously.
Eve smiled. “Better. You know how I can’t resist a guy with a dimple?”
“Really?” Adam grinned, flashing both of his dimples angelically. “I have two!” he screamed in his mind.
“Yeah. I’ve always thought guys with dimples are too cocky, you know? Like you…” Eve jabbed a finger in Adam’s face.
Adam’s former dimpled grin faltered.
“What does he do…this…Mark?”
“Mike,” Eve corrected him patiently. “He’s a lawyer.”
“Isn’t that too old?”
“Nope. He finished his masters in Law at 23…”
Whoa. A smart one—Adam thought—That’s hard to compete with…
“So…who’re you seeing this week?” Eve asked with sugar-coated voice.
Adam frowned at her question. This week—she knows him too well.
“No one.”
“No one?”
“No one.”
“How is that possible?” she laughed.
“I told you I’ve changed!”
“Sure, sure. But I can see it in your face, Ads. You can’t fool me. That heavy eyelids, that weary face—you must’ve at least had sex thirty times this month only!” Eve shrewdly observed.
Adam was used to Eve’s straightforwardness but somehow he felt himself blushing beyond human normality.
“Stop analyzing my sex life!”
“Fine. That wore me off anyway. Thanks for clearing up this room for me. Nighty night, Ads…”
Before Adam could protest Eve was already pushing him out the door and slamming it shut. They’ve been apart for five and a half years and she just brushed him off like that? At least they should talk some more. Until the crack of dawn, preferably, to Adam. He just has so much to talk to her about. And he blamed himself for raising his voice at her just now. He inflicted this void feeling overwhelming him on himself.
---
“What am I supposed to do, guys?” Adam asked no one in particular.
Will just stared at him blankly. Adam didn’t blame this guy. He just had too much on his mind lately since his several failed attempts to make peace with an angry taxi driver. Adam was sure that Jo would’ve forgiven him by now—she’s such a sweetheart. But apparently she’s playing hard to get—literally.
“You can’t tell her who she should or shouldn’t see, Ads…” Matt provided.
“Yeah. But still, I just can’t accept the fact about this…this…Mark guy.”
“I thought you said his name was Mike?” Matt raised his brows.
“Whatever. I just know his name starts with an M.”
“Well—it’s obvious that you’re in love with her.”
“Who?”
“Eve,” Matt shrugged.
“What?! I am not in love with her!”
“That’s right…Ads never falls in love!”
Adam’s knees buckled as he registered the voice. Eve approached the table, grinning. Adam almost gasped at the sight of her. Will was too sleepy to notice and Matt was too devoted to Dawne to bother but Adam had to fight an urge to take off his denim jacket to cover her body up.
“What?” Eve asked innocently, realizing his stare.
He eyed her appearance like a stark hungry bear. She was wearing a tight and shiny silver halter-necked top that skimmed her upper body and a lethally short leather skirt with slits on the sides. She finished off with knee-length leather boots. Her long hair was put up messily, showing off her graceful neck and dangly earrings. Adam had to admit—she looked delicious enough to be eaten in that outfit. When she turned around a bit to check the place out, he nearly fell off his chair. The top was backless, revealing her smooth back sensuously.
“How did you know where to find me?”
“Angel told me you come to this bar often…”
“Remind me to sew that girl’s mouth up!”
“Don’t. She’s such a sweet girl—to me at least. No wonder she got herself such a sweet boyfriend…”
“She introduced him to you already?!”
“He was at your place before I came here. Such a cutie, I have to say…” Eve winked.
“Since when did you learn to check out and appreciate fine-looking guys?” Adam tried to tease.
“Don’t worry. I’m still faithful to Mike…” she returned, smirking.
“Who’s Mike?” Will spoke up.
“Her boyfriend…” Adam spoke with so much loathing that it was impossible not to detect it.
Eve grinned.
“Hey, beautiful…Care to dance?” a drunken looking guy came up to her and was already hauling her in the direction of the dance floor.
“Sure. Why not?” she grinned.
Adam grabbed her free arm and gathered her close to him. He glared at the wobbly guy. “Sorry, buddy. She’s taken.”
The guy stumbled away, murmuring some curses. Eve raised her eyebrows at Adam. He frowned.
“You will stay faithful to Mike,” he pointed a finger at her. This—coming from a true blue Casanova. Absurd, isn’t it?
Eve shrugged carelessly and resumed swaying to the beats in her own space next to the table while Adam downed the rest of his Budweiser. And Matt’s. Before ordering some more.
---
“Wake up, wake up, sleepyhead…”
Adam grumbled groggily at the ever so sickeningly sweet voice of his sister.
“Ughh! Go bother someone else, Angel…” he groaned irritably.
“There’s no other soul left to be bothered!”
Adam reluctantly broke open his eyes to peer at the oh-so-dead-human-alarm-clock. Turned out it wasn’t Angel. Eve was grinning cheerily in his face sending all the memories from last night rushing into his memory matrix at once. A sudden swept of critical headache invaded his brain.
“How’d I get home last night?” Adam asked, rising to follow Eve to the kitchen, subconsciously.
“Your sweet friend Matt helped me brought you up. After dumping you on the bed he mumbled something about having an early surgery today and some sort of pie waiting for him at home,” Eve explained, her face bemused when reminiscing about Matt’s oddness.
Adam chuckled. “I bet it was late by then, huh? D is going to slaughter him!”
“Glad to see you’re making friends with sensible people…”
“What’s so sensible about letting a girl takes over your life?” Adam questioned dangerously. Only, Dawne NEVER takes over Matt’s life. They’re just the kind of couple that looks so darn sweet that they might just give you cavities by looking at them.
“You wouldn’t understand,” Eve frowned.
“Yeah, I won’t.”
“So, Mike’s flying in.”
Just like that—she just simply threw the information smack in his face. Only to Adam it seems like she had shoved it down his throat instead.
“What? What the hell for?”
“Why, to see me of course!”
It’s something about the overly excited look on Eve’s face or maybe the “duh” expression she had on that just perturbed Adam so much. How the heck did she manage to find such an all-around perfect (according to her descriptions) boyfriend anyway? Well, Adam KNEW how. Eve’s immensely cute and witty and fun to be with and bubbly all the time and she’s just…practically flawless. But Adam had never think of her THAT way. Not until now, at least.
“Can you drive me to the airport this Saturday?”
“What? You think I’m your driver?”
“Of course not!” Eve widened her eyes adorably. “I just want you to be the first person to meet him…”
She pulled off her pouty-puffy-cheeked look she KNEW Adam can’t say no to and he didn’t. He just couldn’t.
“Fine.”
“I love you, Ads!” she shrieked and side-hugged him—only she nearly knocked him off his feet.
“What’s for breakfast?” he asked in an attempt to reduce the color on his cheeks.
Eve had on her impish smirk. “A nice big omelette. I left the eggs runny for you and loaded it up with gooey, greasy cheese…”
Adam felt a heave sensation in his stomach. He had never felt so queasy before in his entire life. “I hate you, Eve…” he moaned before making a mad dash to the bath to hurl while Eve just laughed and laughed.
