The Last Time... (completed)

Chapter 1

It’s Your Destiny…

A very down Xiao You sat in the corner spot of the room. Nobody was looking at her or nodding at her as they passed her. Nobody acknowledged her very presence.

But this was not what made her frown. It was a much bigger thing that weighted her heart down and gave her the loneliness that she was feeling inside her heart.

She looked around and her eyes rested on the three people in front of the room. There was a guy about 5”9 tall who was comforting the other two people who were Xiao You’s parents. They were standing before a framed picture… a framed photograph of a girl brightly smiling with a poem and a letter just below it.

With a small sigh she stood from her chair and slowly walked in the middle aisle of the room to go upfront. No one turned or blinked as she walked by in her all white apparel. They just carried on with their conversations, talking in hushed voices. But Xiao You didn’t mind. She didn’t allow herself to get disturbed by this lack of recognition. She just walked on until she reached the three people still standing before the framed photograph where she stopped and stood beside the tall guy who was dressed in a white polo and black slacks and also wore dark glasses to cover his eyes.

She looked at the picture with a slight smile on her face. She ran her hands over the frame gently and read the poem entitled “If Tomorrow Never Comes” which was written in beautiful calligraphy below the photograph.

If I knew it would be the last time
That I’d see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
And pray the Lord your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time
That I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
And call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time
I’d hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would videotape each action and word,
So I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute or two
To stop and say I love you,
Instead of assuming you would know I do.

If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I’m sure you’ll have so many more,
So I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there’s always tomorrow
To make up for an oversight,
And we always get a second chance
To make everything right.

There will always be another day
To say our I love you’s,
And certainly there’s another chance
To say our “Anything I can do’s?”

But just in case I might be wrong,
And today is all I get,
I’d like to say how much I love you
And I hope we never forget,

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
Young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance you get
To hold your loved one tight.

So if you’re waiting for tomorrow
Why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
You’ll surely regret the day,

That you didn’t take that extra time
For a smile, a hug, or a kiss
And you were too busy to grant someone,
What turned out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today,
Whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
And that you’ll always hold them dear,

Take time to say, “I’m sorry, please forgive me,”
“Thank you” or “It’s okay”.
And if tomorrow never comes,
You’ll have no regrets about today.

Below the poem was a short letter:

Wherever you may be now
We know you’re happy.
We will always remember you…
Your bright smile, which brightened up our days…
And how you touched each of our lives…
We love you…
--Xi Men

She looked at the guy standing beside her and held his hand. He didn’t turn to her or anything.

A woman dressed in an all white outfit tapped her shoulder lightly. She turned and smiled.

The woman observed her face and looked at her hand, which was holding the other guy’s hand. She softly spoke: “He doesn’t feel you.” she told her gently. “He won’t ever feel you. Not unless you were very special to him.” she said.

Xiao You smiled bitterly. “I guess he won’t, then. I was never special to him…” she said in a distant voice.

“Father is sorely missing you, Xiao You. He has sent me to fetch you…” the woman said.

Xiao You smiled. “Does he? But… I haven’t seen it… I can’t move on. Isn’t seeing my body the only thing that can make my death sink in? I can’t go to meet the Father if I haven’t accepted my death yet.” she said.

Yes, she was dead. She was just a mere ghost…

The woman smiled. “We have found your body…”

Xiao You released the guy’s hand and turned away from the woman. “Can I come back here…?” she asked.

The woman nodded as she intently looked at her back. “Yes, anytime you wish.” she assured her. “But only as a spirit.” Her eyes then traveled to the poem below the framed photograph of Xiao You. She smiled serenely. “Who would this Xi Men be, dear?” she asked Xiao You.

She turned back to look at her and smiled. “The man I love.” she softly pronounced. “Him.” she added, pointing to the man still standing next to them, oblivious of their presence. “But… he doesn’t love me. Let’s go, then?”

She went ahead to go to the doors of the chapel.

Her angel looked at her retreating back, at Xi Men, then at the note and smiled, though in a sad way.

“He loves you, Xiao You… He was just about to propose to you when the accident happened. But… it was already written this would happen. It was your destiny to die…”
