Xiao You smiled back. “Thank you…” came her weak voice.
Shan Cai tried hard to stop her tears from falling. She saw how frail her friend Xiao You was and this made her worry.
“Would she manage to walk down the aisle without fainting?” she thought to herself as she continued brushing her hair.
Xiao You smiled at Shan Cai. She touched Shan Cai’s hand, which was resting on her right shoulder. “Don’t worry about me…” she said to her in reassurance. “I feel all right today… in fact I don’t feel sick at all!” she told her brightly, trying to make her voice stronger.
Shan Cai laughed along with he best friend and brushed away her tears. “Yeah, okay, I’ll try to believe you…” she told her.
Xiao You pouted jokingly. “Don’t just try, believe!” she insisted.
Her best friend laughed again. “Okay, I believe you.” she said. Tears poured out of her eyes again. “Ah, I can pass for a faucet!” she said in mock complaint.
Xiao You stood up, wobbling slightly. She took the brush from Shan Cai and put atop the dresser. “Oh, here, here…” she said. She hugged her friend tightly.
“I’ll be all right.” Xiao You whispered to her as she hugged her. Her own tears fell. “I’ll be all right…”
Xi Men took a deep breath as he fixed his tie.
“The day has come…” he thought to himself, fighting his tears.
He sighed. “I wish not to let her go, Father…” he quietly said. “I want her to be with me as my wife… but I won’t be selfish. If this is what you want, then so be it.”
The church was bursting with people when Xi Men arrived. It was beautifully decorated with white and pink roses, and the solemnity of the place could be felt.
Many people shook his hand as he passed them. He tried his best to smile, eve though he knew that Xiao You was about to be taken back already. He tried to keep his mind off that thought and focused on the wedding instead.
He reached her three friends and each in turn gave him a hug. Xi Men’s father told him he was proud of him before he and Xi Men’s mother took off to tell the guests to settle down for the ceremony was about to start.
The priest came out and the place went dead silent. Then music began to play. The wedding march began.
Xi Men stood beside his father nervously, holding his breath.
“Relax, son.” His father told him upon realizing that he was shaking.
Xiao You walked down the aisle, holding tightly to her father. Xi Men gave her a smile. She smiled back.
She was beautiful. Her hair hung loose, and she was wearing a short white dress. She looked like an angel. That is, a weak angel. Everybody could see how much she was struggling.
Xiao You and her father finally reached Xi Men. Xiao You’s father gave Xiao You’s hand to Xi Men and smiled at him. “Take care of my angel.” he told Xi Men who nodded in reply.
Xi Men’s father smiled at Xiao You, and gave her a hug.
The ceremonies began and went on smoothly. Xi Men and Xiao You exchanged their vows, and exchanged rings.
The priest smiled down at them. “I now announce you, Xi Men and Xiao You, as husband and wife in the guidance of our father. You may now kiss the bride.” he said.
Xi Men gave his wife a short but sweet kiss as he held both her hands tightly…
He stared deep into her eyes, still clutching her hands. She weakened… she fell.
Xi Men caught her. The moment had come…
Xiao You smiled at him weakly. “I love you…” she said.
Xi Men’s tears fell from his eyes. “I love you too…” he said. “And I will always love you…”
Xiao You nodded at him and kissed his hand. “Remember… we will see each other again.” she whispered to him.
And with that she closed her eyes peacefully. Xi Men clutched her cold hands, still in tears. Everyone else around them panicked. But there was nothing they could do… this was their destiny and nothing could change it…
