“Don’t you dare touch Julian you piece of no good shit. No wonder he always comes back to me, you’re ugly and old. Look at you, no one would believe that you’re only 28. You have nothing compared to me, no body, no looks, nothing. Even your husband is mine now.” She pushed the weak helpless wife causing her to trip and fall.
“Is it true Julian?” Her eyes welled with tears hoping this was just a nightmare, a nightmare that she needed to wake up from.
“Charmaine, you heard her.” He breathed in a long query sigh. The woman tugged at his arms motioning him to go. He turned around for a brief second. “I loved you Charmaine, I really did. But you’ve changed.” He walked away with the woman, leaving her lying helplessly on the hard concrete. Tears welled up in her eyes.
The door slammed loudly. Kenix’s eyes opened swiftly from her light sleep. She ran to the living room to see what had happened. Charmaine’s helpless body was against the door, she sobbed heavily, gasping for breath. Her eyes were puffy and red. Kenix quickly ran to help her best friend up. Two young children peeped from the crack of their bedroom door to see what caused the chaos. Bosco saw his mother sobbing uncontrollably on the floor quickly rushed to her side.
“Mommy, mommy stop crying mommy.” Charmaine pushed Bosco away forcefully. “Where is daddy, mommy? Where is he? Where’s Daddy?” Tears were erupting from Bosco’s eyes now. Charmaine took him forcefully by the arms. She shook him violently. “Shut up, shut up.” She shook him uncontrollably whilst saying that.
“Charmaine stop it, you’re hurting him.” Kenix tried her best to release the grip her friend had possessed on him. “Charmaine, stop it! He’s not the one to blame. The child is innocent.” Charmaine only shoved her friend aside powerfully, causing her to lose balance and fall. Charmaine made way to the bathroom with a struggling and crying Bosco in her arms.
A young girl rushed out to help her mother get up. “Mommy, mommy what’s wrong? Why is aunty Charmaine acting this way?” Kenix looked at the closed bathroom door uneasily, a nauseating feeling filled her stomach. “Leila hurry and go back into your room, mommy is okay.” Leila quickly shuffled back to her room not wanting to get into any trouble from her mother.
“Mommy, I want daddy!” He cried loudly, struggling and kicking in her arms. “I want Daddy! Daddy Daddy Daddy!” His voice stronger and more powerful each time he screamed.
Charmaine slapped him, leaving a red print on his young tender cheek. He cried out in pain. “Daddy! I want Daddy!” He struggled even more. His high pitched screams were deafening. “Shut up Bosco, Shut up right now! Your daddy doesn’t want us anymore. You’re daddy doesn’t love us anymore!.”
“You’re lying. I hate you mommy! You’re such a liar. I want Daddy! I want Daddy!” He screamed. His cries piercing her ears. Her breathing became harder and louder. Her arms shook violently as she grabbed cleaning solution from the cupboard. “Daddy! Daddy! I want Daddy! I hate you mommy! You are such a liar! I want my daddy!” Hatred filled her eyes as she looked at this child. Her trembling hands shakily took the cap off the cleaning solution. Forcing his mouth open, she poured the solution down his throat, until it was empty. His crying was no longer heard.
Kenix banged on the door forcefully to the deathly silence in the bathroom. With one last push, she managed to push the door open. She gasped to the revelation of a silently crying Bosco sitting on the sink beside a empty bottle of cleaning solution. Charmaine’s face held no emotion as she slid to the floor. Kenix quickly took Bosco in her arms and rushed to the hospital.
After an hour, the doctor finally came out with a crying Bosco in his arms.
“Doctor what’s wrong, why can’t he make sounds when he cries?” Fear strained Kenix’s voice. She prayed silently that nothing was wrong with Bosco.
“I’m sorry, but it was too late when you came in. The cleaning solution has caused him to become mute. I’m sorry, we’ve done all that we could.” The doctor looked at her apologetically.
Tears slid down the silky cheeks of Kenix. She took Bosco in her arms and made her way out of the hospital. Along her way out she passed by two nurses.
“What a shame, that child was so handsome too, can’t believe he’s become mute.” Whispered one nurse. The other nurse nodded in agreement.
Kenix opened the door to the dark, tidy apartment quietly. Setting foot into the household, she frantically looked around for Charmaine, hoping to scold some sense into her. But Charmaine was gone, she was no where in sight. Along with her, all her belongings were gone as well. Only a picture of Charmaine and Bosco was left standing on the table.
