Chapter 22

Chapter 22

“Mom, Ron and I are getting married by the end of this year.” Leila stated over a quiet family dinner. Ron’s hand squeezed hers lightly for support. Leila’s eyes slowly trailed to Bosco’s downcast face, yet he seemed to be too busy with his bowl of rice.

“L- Leila you sure?” Kenix’s eyes turned glassy as she looked at her baby.

“Mom, don’t cry I’m a big girl now. I promise that once I get married me and Ron will come back to visit you everyday that you might get sick of us.” A weak chuckle escaped Leila’s lips.

“Yes mom. I mean Mrs. Tong we’ll come by each day until you’re sick of us and your future grandchildren.” Ron looked at Kenix sincerely.

“Ron I like how you call me mother, it sounds really nice.” Kenix gave them a big smile. “I’m glad my daughter has found someone like you to take care of her.”

“Yes!” Ron absentmindedly shouted whilst pumping his fist in the air causing Leila and Kenix to laugh at his child like behavior.

“Ron if you’re so childish how can I trust you with the kids?” Leila teased.

Bosco felt a big lump in his throat. It was true what people say, one person’s happiness is another person’s pain, yet there was no one to blame but himself for letting her go yet again. Love is like a game, there’s bound to be winners and losers. Bosco Wong was a loser at this game.

Bosco cleared his throat catching the other’s attention. “Well since everyone has made their announcements, I also have an announcement to make, I’m planning to go over to Canada to visit my mom. I don’t know how long I will stay for or if I will even come back.” A beaming false façade took over Bosco.

“W –When are you going?” Leila asked quietly.

“Around the same time as your wedding. You won’t be mad at me for not attending your wedding right Lei?” Bosco looked up and their eyes connected, Leila quickly looked away.

“N –No”

==================

Months passed by quickly, Tavia’s stomach began to show as each month passed. Though she put on a happy façade each and every day, on the inside she was breaking apart. Her family especially her dad was disheartened and embarrassed at the fact that nobody wanted to take responsibility for her child. Though Mrs. Yeung acted like nothing wrong, Tavia could clearly see the disappointment in her eyes each time her eyes land on Tavia’s stomach.

On Raymond’s side of the story it wasn’t any better. Gallen insisted Raymond on marrying a woman he doesn’t love in a few months. Though Jessica had changed she was weak compared to Gallen. Though Jessica never said anything outright, Raymond had known for all these years that Gallen had mistreated her, not just by being unfaithful but also by taking his anger out on her.

But like the saying goes anything can be done for love, Raymond is determined to take Tavia out of this hell hole and start afresh with her and the baby, no matter what. The day of his so called wedding he will be free with the one he truly loves.

====================

Leila and Ron’s wedding was coming up a little too fast for her liking. Within a blink of an eye her wedding was just two months away. In the back of her mind she knew finding the easy way out was wrong, it was stupid, it was unforgivable of her to do that but didn’t people always say choose the one that loves you not the one you love. Was it wrong really wrong of her to do that?

As though fate was playing her, Leila just so happened to be home alone again with Bosco. Her eyes concentrated on the television even though her heart was else where. From the corner of her eye she saw him sit down a few seats away from her.

“A-Are you mad at me Leila?” He said it so softly that it was barely audible.

She looked away to avoid his eyes knowing once she looked into them, her heart will make her decisions. “Mad how can I be mad at you? I should really thank you Bosco, for showing me what love is. I’m grateful that you chose this path for both of us. I’m happy that you decided to give me to Ron. I’m happy that I’ll be married soon. I’m ecstatic that you’re planning to go to Canada to visit your mom and might never come back again.” A smile formed on her small lips however the wetness on her cheeks told of her pain.

“I- I’m sorry.”

“Stop saying that Bosco. I’ve heard that word more than enough. I hate you! I hate you Bosco Wong.” She shouted, her blurred vision made her oblivious to the tears that flowed down Bosco’s cheeks. “Even though I hate you, I’ll still pray that you’ll be happy in the future. I’ll still pray that you’re healthy and full of joy each day. I’ll still pray that you will one day find the one who you truly love because that obviously isn’t me. Even though I hate you, there’s a place for you deep in my heart. Thank you for making me see that you were my past, but he will be my future.”

Bosco sat in the cold living room as he heard the door to her room slam.

======================

“Higher Sammul… higher!” Myolie giggled.

“I can’t go any higher! You’re getting heavy! When is it my turn on the swing?” Sammul huffed.

“Not until I’m finished.” Myolie turned her head back to stick her tongue out at him. Unknowingly her grip on the swing handle slipped causing her to tumble into the sand. Sammul seeing her fall quickly slid underneath her to aid her fall.

“Ouch!” Myolie squealed. “But why doesn’t it hurt as much as I thought it would?”

“That’s because you’re on top of me piggy! Get off before I die!” Sammul coughed.

Quickly Myolie heaved her body off of Sammul’s. She gave him an embarrassed laugh. “I’m not that heavy am I?”

“Are you kidding me?” He scoffed.

“Well if I’m that heavy then why did you let me fall on you?” Myolie shouted.

“Because best friends help each other out. As your best friend I don’t want to see you get hurt.”

A smile curved Myolie’s cherry lips.

====================

“You’re a big girl today now Michelle.” Bowie’s eyes started tearing up looking at his only daughter. “Today you’re finally going to be a married woman.” He squeezed his daughter’s shoulder supportively.

“Dad don’t make it sound like someone’s dying. Geez I’m only getting married, and it’s not like I won’t come back to visit you.” Michelle used a kleenex to dab at Bowies’s eyes. “Dad you’re making me feel like a old lady!”

“I’m sorry sweetie.” Bowie blew his nose in the Kleenex.

In another room at the church there sat Gallen with a few men in black suits. “Where is he? I told you guys to keep an eye on Raymond! I told you he’s as stubborn as a cow.”

“Boss I have some of my younger men following him, he can’t get anywhere. Elope eh? He won’t be able to get anywhere with my men on his tail.”

“You better prove it! My fucken business is on your hands.” Gallen pointed a finger at the oldest man. “Elope eh? You don’t know your father well enough my boy.” Gallen picked up his glass of wine, a snicker escaped his lips.

*Flashback* (Gallen’s mind)

“Hey Gallen, this is Steven mind if you meet me somewhere so we can talk?” Gallen played with the edges of his cell phone.

“Sure I’ll meet you at Le Chateau restaurant at eight tonight. Gallen snapped his phone shut wondering what Steven had to talk about.

“Over here!”

“Sorry Steven for being so late but I had some business I had to get taken care of. Anyways why did you want to see me?”

“As your friend and as a doctor I want to advise you about your son and his girlfriend. I was walking by her room and I overheard the conversation they had about running off to Canada. Please tell them not to, she is still really weak and extremely underweight in this pregnancy. I’m afraid that something bad might happen to her baby. Please talk to them on my behalf Gallen.”

“Thank you Steven I’m going to try my best to stop them from doing anything stupid.”

*Flashback ends*

“You can run but you can’t hide.” A smile curved upon Gallen’s lips.

====================

“Honey what is this letter? It looks like Tavia’s writing.” Mrs. Yeung opened the unsealed envelope.

*Letter*

Dear Mom and Dad,

By the time you’ve finished reading this letter, I will already be off to Canada. Don’t worry Raymond is going to take care of me and the baby. I’m sorry for being such a horrible daughter, I know you are ashamed of me even though you’ve never told me. I know that you find it hard to face others with my problem. I’m sorry for creating this problem, it was my entire fault. Please forgive me.

Sincerely yours,

Tavia

Tears poured from Mrs. Yeung’s eyes after reading the letter. “She’s so young… it’s such a scary world out there.”

==========================

“Where is he?” Tavia tapped her foot impatiently along the concrete road. She looked at her watch for the tenth time. “He can’t be late at a time like this, the airplane won’t wait.” Just then she looked up to see Raymond in a silver Honda civic. She peered further and there seemed to be two black cars tailgating him.

Raymond’s brows furrowed deeply as he looked at his side mirror. He knew the black cars were ordered to follow him by his dad. Raymond stepped on his gas pedal harder as he noticed that they were catching up.

“Raymond don’t!” Tavia watched from ahead as she watched Raymond trying to get away from the black cars. Tavia’s eyes widened as she watched the black car lose control slamming right into Raymond’s car causing it to flip over and shoot up in flames. A crowd formed by Tavia watching the scene. “Call the ambulance! Call the ambulance! My boyfriend is in that car… call the fucken ambulance.” Tavia screamed at the crowd.

“You’re going to be fine. Raymond you have to fight for me and the baby.” Tavia held onto Raymond’s hand tightly as they wheeled him into the emergency room.

“Tavia be strong.” Raymond smiled weakly.

“NO! You’re not going anywhere! You can’t go! I’m not letting you go! You have to stay here and help me take care of the baby. I’m not letting you go, do you hear me Raymond Lam?” Tears cascaded down Tavia’s pale cheeks. “Don’t leave… the baby and I really need you.” Her grasp on his hand tightened.

“Miss you can’t go in there. Please wait outside until the operation is finished.” The doors swung close in the operation room.

===========================

“Where is Raymond Lam? Where is he?”

“Mr. Lam please calm down this is a hospital.”

“You’re a nurse and you can’t even answer a simple question like which room my son is in?” Gallen grabbed hold of the nurses shoulders.

“H- He’s in room 204” She stuttered.

“What are you doing here?” A bitter cold voice shot at him. Her eyes were red and swollen.

“Jessica please don’t be like this right now. How is our son? Is he okay?”

“Our son? You considered him a human being? I thought you just treated him like your dog Gallen Lam. Son? Do you even have the right to call him that? Money really makes your world go round huh?” Jessica shouted at him angrily. Just then the operation light went off.

A doctor stepped out. “How is he doctor? Is he alright?” Tavia grabbed hold of the doctor’s arm.

“I-I’m sorry I tried my best.”

“You’re a doctor! How can you not save him? It’s your fucken job to save a patient. I’m going to sue you. You piece of shit no good doctor.” Tavia screamed at the doctor as tears ran down her cheeks. The doctor quickly walked away, leaving the three standing in the cold gloomy hallway.

Gallen slumped in his chair with his fingers digging into his hair. Memories of the past started to run in his mind.

--------------

“Daddy when I grow up I want to be just like you!”

“Raymond I know you’ll be even smarter than daddy.”

“Daddy I can’t be smarter than you!”

“Why?”

“Because you’re my hero.”

----------------

“Wow my little Raymond is growing up so fast.”

“Someday I’ll be tall and strong like you daddy.”

---------------

“Daddy look I got an A+ on my report today!”

“Wow Raymond let me see.”

(In the report) Many people have superman and batman and spiderman as their heroes. But my dad will always be my hero.

----------------
----------------

“I’m sorry.” Gallen repeated over and over again as his hands tugged his hair.

====================

Tavia barged into the room as she looked at the lifeless form. Her head immediately went on his cold chest. “Raymond the game’s over. You can stop playing now. Fine you win and I lose okay? You’re a really good actor Raymond.” Tears flowed from her eyes.

“Tavia don’t be like this.” Jessica tried to pull Tavia away from the body.

“I hate you Raymond Lam! Stop sleeping! Open your fucken eyes. Stop sleeping. Why are you still sleeping? Aren’t you going to wake up and watch our baby be born. Don’t just lye there! Wake up!” Again and again her fist pounded his cold hard chest.

“Tavia please.” Jessica grabbed her from behind. “Raymond isn’t here anymore!”

“No he is, he’s just playing a joke on me. He’s still here. He’s going to open his eyes soon.”

“He’s gone Tavia.”

“Shut up! He isn’t. He’s just sleeping and fooling with us. He isn’t gone. Isn’t isn’t isn’t.”

======================

A month had passed since Raymond’s death. Tavia was slowly learning to accept the fact that he’ll no longer be there with her. During the hard times Tavia and Jessica began to rekindle their relationship, Jessica learned to love Tavia as her own child. Tavia’s stomach was getting bigger and rounder each day as she was already 7 months pregnant now. As for Gallen, he’s now in jail. Ever since Raymond’s death Gallen has stopped talking to anybody. Jessica hardly visits him, the only times she would bother to go is to bring Myolie to see her father. Endless times Myolie would question Jessica as to why her daddy was stuck in that place and numerous times she would reply back with a he’s in school type of thing.

It’s funny how so many things can change in a year. It’s funny how the things that always seemed to be there are now gone. It’s funny how you never knew how much you treasured that person until they were gone. Life is funny, yet there’s not much to laugh at.

Today was Leila’s wedding day and also the day that Bosco was going to leave Hong Kong for Canada. A meaningless smile embraced her lips as she stared upon her own reflection. Didn’t people say the happiest day is a person’s wedding day? Then why couldn’t her eyes twinkle and sparkle the way they used to?

“Leila you look so beautiful today.” Kenix gushed as she softly stroked Leila’s cheek. “My little girl is all grown up.” Kenix smiled as a tear rolled down her cheek.

“Mom.” Leila used her thumb to brush away Kenix’s tear.

“I know sweetie. Mom is being so silly today. I know you will find happiness with Ron.” A chuckle escaped Kenix’s lips.

“I will.” Leila smiled back yet she sighed on the inside.

=======================

“Where to Mister?”

“Hong Kong International Airport please.”

“Going on a trip? Where to?”

“Canada.”

“Oh nice place to visit.” The taxi driver chuckled.

========================

Here comes the bride started playing. Leila slowly made her way down the aisle. She looked at Ron’s beaming face each step that she took. Guests awed at her angelic appearance.

She stopped in front of Ron and together they faced the priest.

========================

“Long ride eh?” The taxi driver chuckled as he looked at Bosco from the rearview mirror.

Bosco looked at his watch and his heart clenched. Leila’s wedding ceremony was about to come to an end. His eyes concentrated on the view of Hong Kong passing by yet his mind could only see Leila, her smile, her eyes, her voice, her laughter.

“I’m sorry Leila but I can’t give you what he can.” He whispered softly.

“Wow wonder why there’s so many police cars up there. Must be doing a alcohol test eh?” The taxi driver chuckled.

“Uh yea.” Bosco responded quietly. The taxi was heading down another intersection. Bosco looked up and to his horror a white van had no intentions of stopping and slammed into Bosco’s side of the car.

“This is Janet Hoang from Hong Kong News bringing you this news from Wong Luong intersection, this morning at 10 oclock AM there happened to be a car accident involving three males. It is reported that the driver of the white van was under the influence of alcohol. The two victims from the taxi have been sent to the hospital under critical conditions.”

==========================

“Do you Ron Ng take Leila Tong to be your wife forever and always?” The priest asked.

“I do.”

“Do you Leila Tong take Ron Ng as your husband forever and always?”

Leila opened her mouth to answer yet she was stopped by the priest. “Almost forget any objections?” The priest chuckled causing the crowd to chuckle softly with him. Just then Kenix’s phone rang.

“I’m sorry.” Kenix gave them a small smile. She quickly answered, Leila looked at her mom’s happy expression immediately change after the phone call ended. Kenix quickly walked up to whisper something in Leila’s ear. Leila’s smile immediately came off.

“I see that everyone is ready again. Do you Leila Tong take Ron Ng to be your husband forever and always?” The priest once again asked.

“N-No” The crowd gasped. “I – I can’t I’m sorry Ron.” She turned around to run down the aisle leaving Ron looking at her trailing back. Tears came to his eyes.

Tears came to her eyes as she kept running. “Please be okay Bosco. Don’t leave me just yet.” She quickly hopped into a taxi.

“Where to Miss?”

“The hospital, please make it quick. “

===========================

“Doctor how is Bosco Wong?”

“Are you his friend or family member?”

“I’m his friend. Please tell me how he is doctor.”

“Well he just got out of critical care stage. Unfortunately he’s in a coma right now and chances are if he doesn’t wake up within 24 hours he will die. The impact of the crash was too much for his head.”

She quickly ran into his room.

===========================

“Bosco wake up. I’m not getting married anymore Bosco because the only person that I’ll ever marry is you.” Her tiny hand squeezed his cold hand. “Please wake up. Lets get married once you wake up alright? I’m sorry that I put you through all this. I’ve loved you all along so please wake up to forgive me.” Her head rested on his broad chest.

Four hours had passed yet there was still no signs of movement. “Bosco don’t you ever wonder what our kids will look like? I don’t want them to have your big ears, they’re really big. But I really want them to have your eyes.” Tears soaked his hospital uniform. “Remember how you said that you’ll take care of me even when I’m fat? What if I get really fat after having our kids. You’ll have to piggy back me Bosco, every night so that I can sleep.”

A knock was heard. “Miss Tong you haven’t eaten anything the whole day. Would you like me to go get you a sandwich at the cafeteria?” A nurse asked.

“No I’m fine.”

============================

Moonlight shone into the room. Leila rubbed her eyes as she looked at Bosco. A gasp escaped her lips as she felt Bosco’s fingers twitch a bit in her grasp. Just then his eyes fluttered open slowly.

“Bosco you’re finally awake.” Leila was ecstatic as she wrapped her arms around his neck.

“Silly girl do you really think I’m that weak? Do you think that I would ever leave you alone? I’m going to stay by your side forever.” Bosco stroked her hair. “I’m sorry Lei for making you worry.”

“No I’m fine as long as you’re okay.”

“Um Lei?”

“Yeah?”

“What’s wrong with my ears? I actually want our kids to have my ears. They’re not that big are they?”

She giggled softly as she planted a soft kiss on his cheek.

“Um Miss Tong, I’m sorry to wake you up but visiting hours are over. You can come visit your friend again tomorrow. I’m sure he will be fine. I can tell he is a really good person, god will bless him. He’ll wake up soon.”

Leila’s eyes concentrated on Bosco’s lifeless figure. So it was all just a dream.

=========================

6 years later.

“Jacky come meet your daddy Bosco.” Leila waved a small boy around the age of 6 towards him.

“Hi Daddy.” Jacky said shyly.

“Bosco, Jacky is our son. I adopted him a year after you left. He has big ears and eyes just like you. He’s going to grow up to be as handsome just like you.” A tear rolled down Leila’s cheek. She knelt down beside his tombstone and caressed his picture. “Bosco I missed you so much, during these 6 years there were so many things that happened, happy or sad that I wanted you to be there with me. I really wanted you to be there with me raising Jacky. I really wanted you to hear him say Daddy for the first time. I really wanted you to take him to school for the very first day. I really wanted you to read his report about you being his hero which he got an A+ on.” Leila quickly wiped away her tears as she noticed Jacky’s eyes on her.

“Mommy…”

“I’m fine honey. You know what? Let’s go get some ice cream.”

“Can I get any flavour I want?”

Leila nodded. “You can get all the flavours you want.”

“Yay!” Jacky smiled happily. “Daddy me and mommy will come visit you again tomorrow. Have a good day Daddy.”

Leila took Jacky’s hand and together they walked down the never ending stairs of the grave yard.
