Chapter 19
"........, I Just Didn't Want To Lose You!"
Charmaine didn’t know what to do when she saw Ron the next day, she didn’t know what to say, what expression to have, or just in general, WHAT TO DO. Charmaine went to the hospital hoping to have more time to think about how she could make things better between herself and Ron without making it worse. But when she had arrived, she found Ron sitting on one of the seats in front of the tree, just opposite the main entrance.
‘Should I pretend I didn’t see him and just walk past?’ Charmaine thought to herself. ‘OR should I just go up to him and say hi.’ Charmaine hit herself on her forehead with the palm of her hand and thought, ‘Charmaine, since when did you become so evil, it’s rude to pretend you didn’t see people, I guess I have to choose the 2nd choice then.’
Charmaine walked towards Ron slowly, and she realized that he was covering his face with both of his hands.
“Uh, Hi Ron.” Charmaine said slowly, feeling regretful for choosing her 2nd option.
Ron looked up, “Oh Hi Charmaine, why are you so early?”
“Erm, I couldn’t sleep.” Charmaine replied, but once she had said that she thought to herself, ‘Oh no, will that cause misunderstanding that he thought he was the reason I couldn’t sleep, well it is, but not that way.’ Charmaine quickly added, “I was worried I wouldn’t be able to catch up to the class, so I couldn’t sleep.” Ron nodded and looked away.
“So…………… you’re asking me why I’m here so early, then why are you here so early?” Charmaine asked with concern in her voice.
Charmaine was able to tell that Ron struggled to answer the question.
“Forget that I asked.” Charmaine said.
“It’s ok, I’ll answer it, I’m here this early because I want to apologize to you on how I reacted last night, I know it wasn’t necessary, sorry.”
Charmaine all the sudden felt the urge to have a smile, “SO are we still going to be good friends?”
“I know how I reacted yesterday was inappropriate, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to give up on you, I love you, and that’s something I’m certain about.” Ron replied with a serious face.
Charmaine was left speechless, she didn’t know what to say.
“Uh, Ron, you have to understand that the person I love is not you,” Charmaine suddenly remembered the sentence that she had rehearsed a few days ago, and she decided to use it, “Ron, everyone in life needs to find their other half, in where they would love and care for them. I have found mine, and Ray is my other half. I’m sure you will be able to find your other half easily. And you will love and care for this person even more than you do for me now. I am certain of that.”
“I know, but I also know that my other half is and will only be YOU.”
“Ron STOP IT, you’re driving me crazy, I don’t know what it takes to get it through your thick head, but I’m going to say it ONE more time, I don’t like you, so FORGET ABOUT ME!” Charmaine screamed so loud that it was possible to be able to burst an eardrum.
Tears began to fall from Ron’s eyes which made Charmaine feel very bad about what she had just did.
“I’m sorry Ron, I didn’t mean it that way.”
But once Charmaine had finished her sentence, Ron ran away towards the car park. All Charmaine thought was that if she didn’t follow him, something will happen to him, and as a friend she didn’t want that to occur. So she began to chase after him. After 5 minutes of running, Charmaine became very tired so she slowed down. But Ron continued running, it was like he never got tired. Once Charmaine had lost sign of Ron, she didn’t know what to do, so she dialed Ray’s phone number for help.
“Hello?” Ray answered.
Charmaine, who was breathless struggled to talk, “RAY! Ron…………… run………… can’t find him!”
“Whoa, put the words into sentences Charm.”
“Ron ran away and now I can’t find him, HELP!”
“WHAT, why, when, how, where did this happen?” Ray said worriedly.
“No time to explain, just come now, to the Kowloon Park, the one in the central of Tsim Sha Tsui!” Charmaine said quickly.
“Ok, see you there in 5 minutes!” Ray hung up once he had finished the sentence leaving Charmaine no time to reply.
Charmaine placed her phone back into her pocket and began to look for Ron again.
Finally, after 5 minutes of running and looking around dramatically, Charmaine finally spotted Ron sitting on one of the swings in the park. She quickly ran towards him and sat beside him on the other swing.
“I’m really sorry Ron.” Charmaine said, showing a lot of sadness in her eyes.
“It’s ok Charm, but you also have to understand that once you love someone, it’s really hard to just not love them in a week.”
“I know Ron, but I can only treat you as a really good friend, I already know who I love and in plan to stay with him forever, do you understand how I feel?”
“I do. I will try my best to give you a break, and still remain really good friends.” Ron smiled.
“Thanks Ron, you will always be my really good friend, and nothing can change that.”
“I feel ok now, is it really visible that I have cried?” Ron asked while wiping his red and swollen eyes.
“I’m afraid to say, but yes it does, it’s SWOLLEN for gods sakes!” Charmaine and Ron laughed together.
“Ron, you really scared me then you know, never do that to me again.” Charmaine said seriously.
Ron nodded, “Can I give you a hug as friends?”
Charmaine nodded and Charmaine went into Ron’s embrace.
But this was not a good time to have done it. Charmaine had totally forgotten about Ray and that he was supposed to arrive in 5 minutes. Ray, who was really worried about the safety of his best friend, found himself looking at Charmaine in the arms of Ron.
He didn’t know what to do, and slowly walked towards them, clenching his fists as tightly as he could. Ron finally released Charmaine from the embrace And Charmaine sat up. She saw Raymond approaching and greeted him, “Hey Ray, I found him.”
“I was able to see that.” Raymond said coldly.
“What’s wrong?” Charmaine asked, as he has never talked to her like that before.
“What’s wrong? What do you think will be wrong if you see your own girlfriend in the arms of another man?” Ray said.
Ron was stunned at what he had just heard, ‘Charmaine was Ray’s girlfriend?’ he silently thought to himself.
Suddenly Ron switched back to reality when he realized that Charmaine was beginning to cry.
“Ray, you got it all wrong.” Ron said quietly.
“What did I get wrong Ron?” Ray asked viscously.
“Charmaine never liked me, it was just me, I liked her, but she always rejected me, she said that she loved someone else, and now I know that person is you,” Ron was relieved to see that Ray was beginning to calm down, “It’s just that I never got it through my head that she only wanted me as a good friend, so she kind of got a bit angry and yelled at me, and I was really upset so she came to say sorry and that she would always want me as her good friend, it was me, who requested for a ‘good friend’ hug, so you misunderstood her Ray.”
Ray felt bad about the way he acted before.
“I’m sorry Charm, I just didn’t want to lose you.” Ray said softly.
Charmaine, who was squatting on the floor crying, got up and hugged Ray tightly.
“I never want you to misunderstand again, because you are the only person I love and that will never change!” Charmaine said while crying into Ray’s shoulder making his T-shirt wet.
Ron was rather surprised about his reaction, and he knew that Charmaine had found happiness with Ray, and he doesn’t want to see her in sadness again.
