She could feel the hands of Ron beginning to move again, but this time, it was lowering towards her waist. Charmaine closed her eyes tightly as she was too scared to do anything else, neither would Ron give her a chance to.
Charmaine could feel Ron’s body approaching her gradually, as he pressed himself against her back. She heard a soft squeak, but didn’t think twice to what it could be, as tears continued to trickle down her cheeks.
A loud thump could be heard, as if a body had fallen onto the floor. But the surprising thing was that she felt no contact from Ron on her body anymore. She quickly turned her body around to find Ron lying motionless on the floor with blood seeping out from the side of his lips.
Charmaine glanced up to see are dark figure standing by the doorway. But as the figure slowly revealed themselves from the shadows, a huge smile rose onto Charmaine’s lips.
“Raymond.” She whispered under her breathe.
She ran up to him and flung her arms around his neck, embracing him tightly. Tears flowed more rapidly from her eyes, but this time, it was due to relief and happiness.
“It’s ok Charmaine. I’m here to protect you.” He whispered in her ear as Charmaine continued to hug him tightly, tears continued to drip from her eyes quickly, as if it was a water tap.
______________________________________________
It has been hours before Raymond was able to soothe Charmaine to sleep. Her crying finally stopped as she lay peacefully on her bed, although her eyes were now swollen from the previous hours of crying.
He gazed at the beautiful view of the night lights from the balcony. The soft cool breeze blew against his skin, causing him to tremble. Thoughts and memories continued to replay through his mind of the moments that he and Charmaine had spent together, whether they were good or bad.
Ever since he first met her when they were five years old, he knew she would be the girl of his life; the girl he is willing to sacrifice for. Times passed quickly as she gradually gained her own independence, and relied less on Raymond. This caused him to think that the gap between them was beginning to become wider.
It was that night that he had considered in leaving Charmaine forever. He thought leaving her was the best choice for both him and her. Raymond knew he would be unable to control his feelings if he remained together with Charmaine. But it was not until this incident, that he knew she still needed her by her side. Although he can not become her boyfriend; husband, but there is one thing he could still do, and that was to protect and support her for the rest of his life, but only from a ‘brother’ point of view.
*Flash back*
Raymond walked along the aisle of the plane and stopped when he found his seat number that was written on his flight ticket. He took as seat beside a man who was about the same age as himself. The man had black short greasy hair, and he was able to distinguish that he had not shaved for at least a couple of weeks. When Raymond looked closer, he noticed tears trickling down his cheeks from his eyes.
“Are you alright, sir?” Raymond asked curiously.
The man glanced at Raymond with red swollen eye, “It’s too late. It’s all too late.” He mumbled wretchedly.
Raymond raised an eyebrow with confusion, “What’s too late?”
“She’s gone, and she’ll never come back.” He continued to mumble.
“Uhhhh…… could I help you in some way?” Raymond asked, not knowing whether he was doing to correct thing.
The man shook his head with disappointment, “A couple of months ago, I left the girl of my love, because she didn’t love me in return and only treated me as an older brother. I thought leaving would be the best decision for both her and me. But when I went back last week to visit her, I found out that she had passed away. I feel bad that I was not there to support her when she needed me the most. And now, I have no chance to prove to her how much I regret leaving her by herself. If I was to choose again, I would have chosen to stay by her side to love and support her, even from an ‘older brother’ point of view. I wish I hadn’t made that stupid choice.” The man explained in a despondent voice.
Raymond noticed that the situation the man was in, seemed familiar. Suddenly, he remembered that he was also in the same situation which caused him to think twice about leaving.
At that moment, Raymond knew that it still wasn’t too late for Charmaine and himself to go back. If he was to be placed in the exact same position as the man beside him, he would have not left her in the first place.
Without thinking any further, Raymond sprinted towards the exit of the plane.
