Chapter 1

The First Case

Living in a life without memories, the pass two years happened to me was nothing different as a child. I had to learn and accepted new things that came to me. Absolutely, not many things I could find a familiar feeling. However, I was a lucky person. My family was always next to me facing with many tough problems. Everything came to me was normal, and it only changed beginning when I met her. I could not describe the feeling that she brought to me: a lovely feeling, missing, and especially was a deeply hurting. I could not understand and could not find any reason for her to hate me. Whenever we met, she always found a good reason to excuse, and that time my heart ached badly. I am Raymond Lam a lawyer. My family was living in England and I graduate in that country. I went back Hong Kong with a hope to find my memories. I lived with my friends Bosco, Sammul, and Benny. Bosco was also a lawyer. Sammul and Benny were working as legal assistance.
The first time I met her within a case – a woman intended to kill her husband. At first I thought I would win because I got many good conditions. Consequently, at the end it was different. We had a tie, but the truth I knew I lose. I lose for her good, and deeply thought that she had for her client. That night was a night before the court was held; I followed Bosco to a bar where we usually came there for fun. In a far distance, I saw Benny was talking with Steven and Carlos. Sammul was busy with his phone. Seeing me, Benny quickly asked, “What are you doing here?”

I sat down next to Sammul, “What do you mean?” I asked

“You have to come to the court tomorrow.” Benny said

“And?” I innocent asked

“You don’t know who your competitor is?”

“I know – Lawyer Yeung. She was working in the same place with Carlos. Last time I have to go with Bosco and could not attend for the meeting appointment, and until now I did not know how she looks. However, the good thing is I know I will win this case.”

“Look down on other people is not a good habit. As I know, that Lawyer Yeung is really good.” Steven said

“Don’t worry; all the benefits are on our side.” Sammul said

Benny turned to Carlos, “Hey, say something. You are working with them; there must be some discussion about this case.”

“I can’t say anything. In a role of a friend, surely I will support Raymond.” Carlos said

I smiled and bowed, “Thank you”

“As a lawyer, I could not go against with my rule. Yi is responsible for this case. She has all the right, but this time when she accepts this case, she makes me think a lot. Yeung Yi never accepts any case that she knows she could not win. I have read over the information for this case. I could not find any way to fight, but I don’t know why she accepts it.” Carlos said

I turned to Benny and proudly looked at him, “Do you hear that?”

“Don’t say I’m not telling. Lawyer Yeung is a smart person. Don’t ever let her see your weakness side, if not she will hit you from that point. Also, to compare with her you are just a baby who learns to walk. She’s in this career for almost two years, and you are only six months.” Carlos said

“Could you please stop pressure him? You guys are talking like we are not having a fight, and for sure we would loose the battle.” Bosco said

“Dying for a beautiful girl, there is no regret at all.” Benny said

“What are you trying to say again?” I asked

“Don’t you know Lawyer Yeung is a beautiful girl?” Benny said

“Really?” Bosco and I asked at the same time

“Absolutely” Steven spoke

“You know her?” Bosco surprising asked Steven

“After the raping case one year ago, I think most Hong Kong people know her.” Steven replied

“No wonder why I don’t know her.” I said

“I’m nothing different with you. I was at Singapore for a training class.” Bosco spoke

“That is a serious case. We have no evidence at all. Both Leila and I have to come to the course helping Yeung Yi. But, in the end Yeung Yi could find enough evidence to beat that bad guy.” Carlos said

Bosco touched on my shoulder, “I come to the course with you tomorrow.”

“For what?” I asked

“I want to see does that Lawyer Yeung has three heads or six hands.” Bosco said

“Seriously, she is really beautiful.” Sammul said

Bosco smiled, “If Sammul says that, I think she must be real beautiful.”

Yeung Yi – a name gives me a weird feeling. I finished my beer and quickly left the bar. It did not mean I was going home prepare for the battle tomorrow. I just wanted to be alone. I want to find out that weird feeling about a girl I never met.

Leila stood in front of Tavia’s room. She praised her hand up and knocked on the door, “Come in,” She heard Tavia’s voice

Leila opened the door and looked inside. Tavia was busy with her document, “It’s almost twelve.” Leila said

“I know,” Tavia responded without looking at her friend

“The court was held at 8 tomorrow. If you are not going to bed, you will not have enough energy for the battle.”

“I know, but I want to finish this report. Tomorrow will be a hard time for me to face with.”

Leila sat down on the bed and held a pillow, “Can I ask you a question?”

Tavia stopped and looked up at her friend, “What?”

“Why do you accept this case?”

Tavia smiled, “I know you want to ask me this question long time ago, but you didn’t. Why do you ask me now?”

“I don’t want to pressure you. We have no way to defend for that woman. She also agrees that she did intend to kill her husband.”

“It is not about she accepts or not. The point is what the reason for her to kill her husband is.” Tavia said

“Did not she say she could not handle her husband?” Leila spoke

“If it is normal, there would be nothing to talk about. If she could not handle him, they can divorce. She doesn’t have to kill him and to be in jail forever. Don’t you remember whenever I ask her about the reason? Her face always blanks. It looks like she was hiding something. One more reason, deep in her eyes I could find a hurting feeling. I found…” Tavia paused and remembered of her pass, “She was facing something as same as I do.”

“I don’t get it.” Leila said

Tavia tried to prevent her tears, “I just feel sympathy for her.”

“What is the reason that you found you should defend for her?”

“Tomorrow, you will know it.”

“You can’t tell me now?”

Tavia smiled and they heard the door’s bell, “Who is it this late?”

Leila said and got out to open the door. Ron gave Leila a cute handsome smiled, “Hi beautiful girl.”

Leila smiled and stepped aside to leave some space for Ron, “Where is Yi?” He asked

“Yi, handsome guy is looking for you.” Leila yelled

Tavia got out of her room. Ron placed two plastic bags down the table, “Ng sir, it was mid-night. What bring you up here at this time?” Tavia asked

Ron smiled and sat down on the sofa. He opened the bag, “I finished the new case. On the way home, passing the dessert place I want to eat and buy some for you guys to share.”

Leila sat down on the sofa, “Luckily I’m not that fat. If I could not find a good boyfriend, I will chop your head for buying dessert at night.”

Ron smiled and passed the cup of sweetened porridge to Tavia, “Thanks,” Tavia bowed and found bruise in Ron’s hand. “What’s happened with your hand?”

Ron looked at his hand, “Oh, I got hit.”

Tavia sighed and stood up to got medication tip. She sat down next to Ron and pulled his hand. She began to rub. Ron lovely looked at the girl that he secretly loved for a long time. Leila smiled and stood up; she left. “It would be my pleasure to have a lovely girlfriend like that.”

Tavia suddenly stopped; she bit her lower lip. “I did not mean to scare you.” Ron continued

Tavia continued rubbing, “But, thank god I don’t want to have a handsome boyfriend like you.”
