===============================================================
Hours became into days, weeks and months. Moving on was inevitable for everybody no one could deny it and for Ximen was no exception. For almost of his life he had to live his life like he supposed to live. He had to be who everybody had perceived him to be. His life revolved to work and work, only occasionally with girls but it was not as many as he used to do. Eventually everybody just had to face the world and had left the life they had before, the life of care free and fun. Just like the rest of his best friends, they had grown up and moved on with their steady life. Perhaps Ximen had grown up also.
Nevertheless his heart told differently. His heart didn’t want to move on, no matter how hard he tried. In his heart, time stayed still. It stayed to where she had told him all the things he had longed to believe.
Oh yes, he would remember forever the thing she had said that night. It would be etched in his memory till the day he left this earth.
She had told him about she had loved him so much and how much he had contributed her in her life. How he had been her inspiration. She just simply had told him what he had meant to her world and about she had needed him.
Oh how wrong it had been! Everything she had said about her love, about what he had meant to her world and about her had needed him had been wrong!! The truth, he had been and still was the one who needed her!
He could not fully comprehend his tormenting feeling that time. He had been torn between the thirst of his need of her and the curse of carrying his father blood. Nevertheless the curse of inheriting Ximen’s infamous name had won instead of his need.
He sighed heavily and he was just like usual looking unbearable handsome with his elegant tailor-made business suit. His shoulders were slumped in dejection and his good looking feature was tired as he rested his beautiful shape head on the leather seat behind the large mahogany table in his massive office. He had so many things to do with his work today or any other days as matter of fact. But his mind was not in all those important documents that piled nicely for him to read or just simply to sign.
He put down his Mont Blanc pen on the table and let his mind wondered to the day when she had told him about her confession of her feeling for the fourth time. Fourth time? Yes, she had told him that she loved him for forth time. Unbelievable!! So far none of his women had told him their feeling for fourth time! But she was not any women. She was different, in every single way.
It had been one year and eleven months ago but the memory still vividly cleared in his head. It seemed it was just like yesterday when she had begged him to have a talk to him. Reluctantly he had agreed, not because he had not wanted see her. Oh, he had wanted to see her but somehow he had known what she would have wanted to say to him. And as he had predicted, she had told him again.
He shook his head as if he tried to erase that memory. The memory of her face when had kept on glancing at him while they had had their dinner in some exclusive restaurant. The sweet soft voice of her when she had said that she had loved him echoed in his head. And every time she had said that, it had turned his world up side down. He had always been speechless and in the verge of going mute. Nevertheless that time it had been different. That time he had wanted to tell her the truth of his feeling, but the words had been gotten in the way. Instead of saying the truth, he had said another lie. He had told her that they could not be together as they had been a world apart and he had no attention to go into trouble of seeing one woman only.
He, now closed his eyes regretted what he had said to her. He knew very well that his word would have cut her heart and she might have cried. But to his surprise, she had not cried. She only had sat there and smiled. She had smiled as if saying that she had accepted what he had said. She only had muttered the word of thank you that he had been honest to her and had said that she already had known. She had also said that she would not have bothered him with those questions any more. She had guaranteed him that.
Oh yes, she had been keeping her promise all this time. Although sometimes they met but he could sense that she tried to avoid him, not directly but of course it was clearly.
He reclined his straight sitting position still with his eye shut. Now his mind flied to the day when they had stood alone under the cloudy sky at the graveyard two months ago. Yes, it had been two months ago since the last time he had seen her standing in front of her parents’ tomb. He wondered how she had been. How she had been coping with her life. Asking Shancai would be the last thing in the world he would have done since she had not known her best friend life very well. They only had kept in touch occasionally.
Suddenly he heard his mobile phone rang. And as if Shancai had known that he was thinking about her, she called.
He opened his eyes before answering the call. “Hi Shancai.” He greeted.
“Ximen.” Shancai the weed girl greeted by calling his name. “Where are you now?”
“Where do you think I will be at this hour, my dear friend?” He replied her answer with question.
“Oh… My God, don’t tell me that you are still in the office?!!” She said disbelief almost screaming. It was fortunate for him that she only spoke over the phone. Her well-known screaming almost had made her fiancé had gone deaf.
“Of course I am in still in the office.” He said intone and wondered why she sounded so frustrated.
“Please don’t tell me that you forget Dao Ming Si’s birthday. I have informed all of you last week.” Her replied was a big shock to him. He clapped his hand to his head and looked at the calendar on his table.
“Oh my… I am so sorry Shancai… I…” He was lost in words. How could he forget his best friend’s birthday!!
“My God, Ximen… How could you…” Shancai sounded disappointed to him and it made him felt guiltier that he already had felt.
“I am so sorry Shancai… I… Uhmmm…” He wavered. He could not say that his mind had been wondering to her best friend, Xiao You. “I really have been busy a whole day.” Finally he could find a good excuse of his intolerable manner.
“Fine.” Her voice stated then took a deep sigh, “But can you make it now? Dao Ming Si has not come from the office yet.” She informed him and as she had to make sure he would attend her fiancé’s small birthday celebration, she mentioned again the place even though she had told him last week. “It’s in Room Eighteen bar lounge, Ximen.”
“Sure I will come right away.” He said and added another question. “Everybody has come?” He prayed silently that he would not be the last person who attended Dao Ming Si’s party, since he had been the last person who had shown up almost every time they gathered together.
“Well, Hua Ze Lei and Jing are still on the way.” Ximen always was amused to hear every time she called Hua Ze Lei with his full name even to her fiancé. As long as he could remember, Shancai still kept calling her fiancé Dao Ming Si instead of A Si.
“Oh ok, I will be there soon.” He said and continued. “Don’t worry Shancai I will be there right on time.” As if he tried to calm her down, to be honest he didn’t want to get the hit from her as that was the thing she always did every time he forgot about something or just simply teased her and her fiancé, A si. And Ximen knew very well that her punch could be very painful and he definitely had no wish to strike with two reasons; first he would never hit a woman and second he knew that A si could blow him harder. Ximen had tasted his best friend fist on his face one time before and although the fight had been a draw, the pain he had felt had been for three days.
After he said goodbye and hung up the call, immediately he stood up from his leather seat. He didn’t bother to turn off his laptop and to fold his paperwork as he knew his secretary would come in the morning and cleared his table.
On the way to the bar lounge he just had remembered that he had forgotten to ask Shancai one essential question. Would she also have come to attend A Si party, since Shancai had told him that she had informed all of friends? Knowing Shancai, she already had informed her faithful friend Ching He and his girlfriend, Mimi. How about her? Had she informed her also? She might have, but the problem would be if she would attend and come to party or she would not.
