In the midst of the night....
“Everything’s done?” a voice asked in a whisper.
“Yes. Mission completed.”
“Great. Now we can head home and get some rest. Let’s enjoy the show tomorrow.” the person’s tone was full of mischievousness.
. . . . . . . . . . . . .
“KENNETH MA! DO YOU WANT TO DIE???” Bernice growled in a breathless voice as she saw Kenneth deliberately throwing trash unto the cleansed floor that she had swept not long ago. She gave him a menacing glare but he chose to ignore it. She had been serving him from sunrise to sunset all because of that stupid deal she had agreed to. Her hair was all messed up, she was exhausted and not to mention, she was sweating like crazy. It was so unfair! She was the only one being tortured!
“You should stop talking and go on with the cleaning. Don’t forget you still have to sweep my room and clean the toilet.” Kenneth laughed evilly. He was enjoying seeing Bernice in this state.
Throwing the apron away, Bernice yelled. “I’M NOT DOING THIS! I QUIT!”
“YOU CAN’T QUIT!”
“WHO SAYS?!”
“ME!! You lost to the deal, remember? NOW YOU HAVE TO LIVE THROUGH THIS FOR A WEEK! SUCK IT UP!”
“ARGHH!!!!!” cried Bernice, feeling totally defeated. She stomped off, ignoring Kenneth’s demands for her to come back. Her skin felt so sticky and she reeked; Bernice needed a shower.
“Oh c’mon, you’ve been bossing her around for the whole day. Let her off.” Ron stated, plopping himself onto the cough with a bag of popcorn in his hands.
“But I was having fun.” Kenneth protested.
“This is so strange.” Ella mumbled, coming from the kitchen.
“Ella, you’re strange. You’re talking to yourself.” Ron said, receiving a slap from Ella but he managed to dodge it just in time.
Ella sat down across from Ron and Kenneth. “Last time I check, their was almost no food left in the cupboards and refrigerator. A few minutes ago, I went to get a cup of water and oddly, the refrigerator was filled with food. It’s like someone restocked them.”
“What’s the problem with that?” Kenneth asked, concentrating on the television screen. He had been flipping through the channels, even though there was no cable nor satellite.
“Don’t you think it’s strange? I mean...it’s freaky.” Ella thought aloud.
“Well I—“ Ron started but was interrupted by Tavia.
“Ron, I don’t like the new toothpaste that you put in my room. It’s so minty.” Tavia cried, a look of disgust on her face as she sat down next to Ron. Grabbing the bag of popcorn in his hands, she fed herself. “I like my old toothpaste. It was so sweet. Why did you throw it out? There was a little bit left–I still could’ve used it.”
Ron looked at Tavia with a perplexed expression. “What? I never changed your toothpaste.”
“Huh? You didn’t? But..I thought..”
“You don’t think there’s a...ghost in the house, do you?” Kenneth asked, switching off the television screen. Ella, Ron, and Tavia’s ears suddenly perked up. Listening with full attention. “First, the food gets stocked and then Tavia’s toothpaste got replaced with a new one. What if...what if this house was haunted?” questioned Kenneth, shivers running through his body.
“G-ghost???” Tavia asked, swallowing down the lump in her throat. A gust of cold air entered the room as the white curtains began to sway in mid-air. Suddenly, a loud thunder could be heard outside. A loud scream escalated from Tavia which cause Kenneth to scream, then Ron and finally, Ella.
“What in the world is going on?!” Leila asked, skipping down the stairs with Bosco following behind her. Her words were ignored as they continued to scream. “BE QUIET!!” she shushed, staring at Tavia and Ron whom was cuddling each other. “What are you doing?”
The screaming stopped but they continued to shake.
“W-why i-is the curtain f-flying??” Kenneth asked in a shaky voice, pointing his finger towards the window.
Bosco walked to where Kenneth was pointing and pulled the curtain aside. He rolled his eyes as he closed the window. The curtain instantly dropped back to its place. “The window is open and it’s raining outside. This island has mood swings. One day it’s sunny, the next–there’s a storm.”
Ron, Ella, Tavia and Kenneth all sighed in relief.
“Okay, who opened the window?” Ron growled. They all shook their head.
“Could it be the g-ghost?” asked Kenneth, receiving a punch from Bosco.
“Stop trying to scare them.”
“I wasn’t. It’s a possibility!”
Leila sat next to Ella and said, “There’s no such thing as ghosts. Stop being ridiculous.”
“And why are you so sure?” Kenneth shot back.
“That was refreshing.” Bernice smiled happily, entering the living room. “What’s going on? Why do you all seem so..scared?”
“T-There was a ghost!” blurted Tavia.
“What?”
“The curtains were flying because the window was opened so we thought..” Ella trailed of.
“A ghost?” Bernice bursted out into laughters. “I was the one who opened the window earlier. I felt so hot and sweaty because SOMEONE was making me do all these unnecessary things. By the way, who said there was a ghost?”
“KENNETH!” All fingers were pointing in his direction.
“I should’ve known. Why did you even waste time believing him? He’s a moron.”
“What did you call me?!? Don’t forget you still have to serve me!!!”
Bernice mocked him in the background. Bernice walked to the window and looked outside, it was raining hard, the trees were swaying back and forth. “It’s raining! I think there’s going to be thunders..”
“T-thunders?” Tavia mumbled. Ron caught the terrified look on her face and gave her hands a reassuring squeeze.
“Don’t worry. I’ll be here.” he comforted, knowing Tavia’s fear of thunders and lightning. A loud roar was heard outside and then a few flashes. Then all of a sudden, the whole house turned dark. Kenneth and Tavia was the first to scream, followed by the others.
“OH MY GOD! A BLACKOUT!”
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
[ Meanwhile, upstairs, before the blackout.. ]
‘Knock. Don’t knock. Knock. Don’t knock.’ her mind was having a debate of its own. Half of her wanted to knock on his door, but the other half was too coward to do so. As Linda turned around to walk away, his door opened. She spun around to see him standing there. A small smile appeared on her face.
“Err..I..uh...Aunty told me to give you this before this trip, but I only managed to give it to you now.” Linda extended her hand which was holding a jade pendent.
His face darkened at the word ‘Aunty’. “I don’t need it.”
“Why not?” he didn’t answer and Linda knew the reason why. “You still can’t accept her, can you? She’s worked so hard for you to accept her. Why can’t you—“
“I can’t!” he shouted causing her to jump back in shock. “She’s...the cause of my mother’s death.”
Slowly, her arms retrieved as she put the jade pendent back into her pocket. “Let it go, Ray. It wasn’t intentional. At least give her a chance..”
“Are you done?”
Linda looked up, tears beginning to form in her eyes. “Stop being like this, Raymond.’
As Linda was about to open her mouth to say something, loud screams interrupted her and then the whole house turned black.
“It’s a blackout.” Raymond muttered, making his way down the stairs.
“Why, at this time..” Linda sighed.
. . . . . . . . . . . . .
“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!” Tavia and Kenneth continued to scream meanwhile the others had calmed down and stopped.
“MY GOSH! SHUT-UP! BOTH OF YOU!” Bernice yelled angrily, covering her ears.
“FCUK, YOU SCREAM LOUDER THAN ME!!!!” Kenneth yelled back while Tavia’s immediately zipped her mouth, afraid of the angry Bernice.
“AT LEAST I’M NOT THE ONE WHO’S ACTING LIKE A BABY!!”
“Stop it guys!!!!” Bosco said. “Let’s go find some candles or even flashlights. There ought to be some around here.”
“There’s a blackout?” Linda asked while trying hard not to bump against anything through the darkness.
“Yeah.” Ella confirmed her question. “I wonder how long it will last.”
“I’ll go check upstairs if everything’s all right.” Ron suggested, prying Tavia off of his arms. “Tavy, let go.”
“B-but..”
“Just stay here, it’s just a black out. I’ll be right back.” Ron assured. “Kenneth, you come with me.”
“I’ll come and help.” Leila volunteered, trudging after Ron and Kenneth.
“I’m going to find candles and flashlight, anyone willing to help?” asked Bosco and he received a ‘yes’ from Ella. They walked off together in search of a light source.
“I wonder if there’s a power box somewhere in the house?” Bernice pondered. “Let’s go find it.” she paused, thinking of the many possibilities of going alone. Bernice decided to drag Raymond along since he was the only guy left. Plus, it was more safe to be around a guy. “Raymond, you’re coming too!” Bernice had already pulled him along without waiting for an answer from him. Thus, Raymond could only surrender to her.
“Where are you going?” Linda called out.
“Going to fix this problem, are you coming?” Bernice replied.
“Yes, I’m coming!” shouted Linda as she decided to tag along with Bernice and Raymond.
Tavia watched as everyone slowly disappeared. Without uttering another word, Tavia rushed towards the kitchen where Bosco and Ella was. It was way better than staying alone—at least that’s what she thought.
. . . . . . . . . . . . .
“Did you find it?” asked Ella who was rummaging through every possible cupboards and shelves.
“No, not really. I swear I saw some a few days ago. There was even flashlights. Why can’t I find them now? They always disappear when you need them the most.” a frown was on Bosco’s face. “Tavia? How about you?”
“H-huh?”
Bosco stopped and turned to look at Tavia who was standing beside him, shaking. He chuckled, knowing how frighten she was. “Are you that scared?”
“I’ve never experienced a black-out before.” Tavia whispered as she remembered the ghost that Kenneth had mentioned. “I-I ‘m scared thu-thunders..and lightnings..” As if on cue, a lightning struck and Tavia fell down onto the ground, covering her ears.
Bosco who was witnessing this, slid down beside Tavia, trying his best to comfort her. “Hey it’s going to be okay. It’s going to stop soon.”
Ella made her way onto the other side of Tavia and sad down beside her. “Are you okay? I know, why don’t we sing a song? It’ll help..”
“You’re laughing at me...” Tavia softly spoke, looking from Bosco to Ella.
Ella stared at Tavia and asked, “What do you mean?”
“Why would we laugh at you?” he asked. “Because you’re scared of thunders?” Tavia gave a weak nod.
“We won’t!” Ella defended. “Why would we laugh at you? Everyone has their own fears and problems.”
“She’s right..” Bosco agreed, “but why are you scared of thunders?” he stopped and wondered if it was alright to ask her the question. “You don’t need to answer if you don’t want to.”
It was silent at first but Tavia broke it, “I..I don’t know. Something inside of me...is just scared. I think Ron knows why. There’s always this frown on his face when I mention something like that...” she trailed off as Bosco and Ella nodded their head.
“Bosco, is this place really haunted?” she started, wanting to change the topic.
Bosco buried his head into the palm of his hands, sighing at how gullible Tavia was. “Yes. In fact, there’s a ghost standing right in front of you.” he replied sarcastically.
“W-what?”
Ella slapped Bosco’s arm for attempting to scare Tavia. “Don’t listen to him. There is no such thing as ghosts! C’mon..the storm is ceasing outside, we should get back to our mini scavenger hunt here.” with that said, Ella stood up and continued on with the search.
A few minutes (in which seemed like forever) they finally found the what they were looking for.
“Here it is! That was hard work.” Ella exclaimed, holding one of the flashlight amongst 3. “It was hidden all the way in the back.”
“YAY!” Tavia breathe as she grabbed the second one while Bosco did the same. “Let’s go tell them we found it.”
“But we haven’t found the candles yet!” disagreed Bosco.
Just then, he heard someone calling his name.
“BOSCO WONG!”
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
“Aww man, this is so hard. I can’t see anything.” Kenneth complained, grabbing onto Ron’s shoulder who was leading the way. Leila and Linda was following closely behind, holding onto each other.
“Man, stop it. My shoulder is beginning to ache!” Ron cried, wanting to pry Kenneth off of him but failed.
“No way!!! I don’t want to die young! There’s so much I want to do. I haven’t even dated Jessica Alba!!”
At his comment, Leila bursted out into giggles while Ron just rolled his eyes in annoyance.
“Would Jessica Alba even think of dating you?” Leila joked. “She’s taken!”
“So! Maybe she’ll fall for me instead!” Kenneth arrogantly replied.
“Dream on.” Ron teased. “Stop standing there, Kenneth. Leila’s a girl and she’s not half as scared as you.”
“Are you sure she’s a girl?” asked Kenneth.
“HEY!!!!” Leila shouted.
“Forget it, Leila.” Ron started, rolling his eyes and successfully got Kenneth off of him.
“Gosh Kenneth—it’s just a blackout.” Leila stated the obvious.
“A lot of things can happen during a blackout. Like say, wh—“ Kenneth started only to receive a slap from Leila and Ron.
Ron snapped, “Shut-up for a minute, will you?”
Leila was about to enter her own room to check, but Bernice’s voice calling for Bosco stopped her from doing so. Leila looked from Kenneth to Ron, having the same what-the-hell-is-going-on expression and they all dashed downstairs to where Bernice was.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Bernice continued to drag Raymond and Linda along with her on the search for a power box that would hopefully be the solution to this blackout. As Bernice was walking aimlessly around, she noticed a door that she had never seen before. Curiosity took over her as she approached the wooden door. “What’s in here?”
Raymond and Linda shook their head, having no idea whatsoever was behind that door for they haven’t seen it either. The house was bigger than they had imagined. Plus, they haven’t really ‘explored’ the house; the 9 of them were found mainly in their own bedrooms, kitchen or the living room. That was about it.
Bernice turned the knob slowly and looked down into something that seems like a deep, dark, hollow pit. Using her hands to feel, she could sense a rail to support her. With caution, Bernice slowly stepped down. However, it was extremely difficult to see in the dark; therefore, Bernice stepped back up, cleared her throat and hollered out loud, “BOSCO WONG!” This caused Raymond and Linda to immediately shield their ears.
Linda, standing behind Bernice, wondered aloud. “Why are you calling for Bosco?”
“I need a flashlight! Can’t really see anything.”
Fast as lightning, flashing before her was Bosco, Tavia, Ella, Leila, Kenneth and Ron. Bernice gaped at the 6 standing in front of her. She swore she had only called out Bosco’s name. Not Ron, Ella, Leila, Kenneth or Tavia. She couldn’t believe how effective her voice was to get everyone’s attention.
“What? What?” Bosco asked in confusion.
“YOU SAW A GHOST?” blurted Kenneth, holding dearly onto Ron. On the other hand, Ron was very agitated by Kenneth’s action.
“Did you find something?” Ella pondered, her eyes wandering over to the entrance.
Bernice nodded her head. “Well, sort of.” she saw the flashlight in Bosco’s hand and grabbed it from him. Turning it on, she shone it down into the basement. “Look. I just found this room!” Everyone’s eyes trailed to where Bernice was pointing with the little device in her hand.
“That’s all?” Leila asked, not believing she ran all the way downstairs to see this.
“Yeah...”
“We dashed down here for no reason?” Ron said flabbergasted.
Bernice nodded. “Let’s go down and see!” she suggested, leading the way down. Raymond followed after Bernice carefully. Linda shrugged her shoulders as she too, went along with Bernice. Kenneth mumbled incoherently under his breath, but also walked through the doorway with Ella right in front of him. Bosco held out his hands and Leila grabbed it as he led her down.
“I guess we’ll go too. Tav?” Ron replied, looking at Tavia. They were the only ones left. Tavia did not say anything, inistead she walked behind Ron who was in front of her. Tavia felt the hair on back standing up. The basement was definitely creepy. The stairs were make irritating noises as they descended the flight of stairs.
“Ro–AHH!” Tavia screamed out of nowhere. She had been too busy pondering and tripped herself as a result of her carelessness. Her hands were waving in the air helplessly. Losing control of her balance, Tavia stumbled towards Ron who in return bumped into Leila. In which Leila knocked into Bosco and like so, Bosco slid forward into Kenneth’s back. Kenneth who felt the sudden pain was able to mouth a ‘WTF” before he, himself, collided into Ella. Ella screamed out loud and pushed forward into Linda. A shriek was heard from Linda. Hearing this, Raymond turned around only to be pushed backwards. Bernice wanted to turn around to see what all the ruckus was about unfortunately, she couldn’t for Raymond’s back knocked her right down unto the ground. It was just like a domino effect.
All 9 of them groaned in pain, complained, and cursed in anger. Especially Kenneth who just couldn’t keep his mouth shut.
“What the hell?! What the f*ck is happening??!?!” he demanded for an answer. “Who the hell????? @*((&@(@”
“Oww..I think I have bruises on my arms.” Leila cried, rubbing her arms. “Bosco, where are you?”
“On the ground. Aughh..my waist!” answered Bosco, feeling the pain around his waist.
“Ugh! Kenneth do you mind getting off of my back? It really hurts! And you’re heavy too!” Ella moaned in pain. Kenneth realizing his position and quickly got off, feeling apologetic.
“Aw man, I think I bumped my head against the railings!” Ron shouted out, massaging his forehead.
A gasp came from Linda when she noticed that she was on top of Raymond and luckily, she was not bruised nor had she felt any pain. A small groan escape from Raymond. “Oh my god, Raymond!”
“What the hell is going on?!” he roared, furious.
“I WANT TO ASK THAT QUESTION!!!” Bernice was flat on the ground. “RAYMOND! WHY DID YOU PUSH ME?!
“Linda knocked into me.”
“Ella pushed me!”
“Kenneth was pushing me forwards.”
“That’s only 'cause Bosco here almost killed me!”
“No, I didn’t! Leila fell first!”
“But Ron was the one who knocked me down into you!!!!!”
“TAVIA TRIPPED ON HER OWN!” Ron ended the blaming-game. He did not fully comprehend what he had said but when he did, he turned around to glare at Tavia even though she may not be able to see him in the dark.
“WHAT?!” a thundering reply came from everyone. “TAVIA YEUNG!!!!!!”
“I’m sorry??” Tavia softly said, not sure if that was the correct answer.
