Chapter 2

- - spills

Miyeon with her fist still raised in the air, she looked behind her shoulder at Heewon. Heewon gave her a dumbfounded look and then burst out laughing. That was one of the dumbest and funniest things that Miyeon had ever done and said. What a dumb kid, Heewon thought. Miyeon wasn’t laughing though. Her face went blank and she lowered her fist to her side.

Miyeon didn’t see what was wrong with her little experiment that she wanted to try. She knew that it was a bit silly to want to be hated, but... she was really curious. Sad, Miyeon lowered her head and walked over to Heewon who was having a fit on the ground. She looked upon the girl who was laughing hysterically and kicked her lightly in the side wanting her to stop. Heewon finally stopped and stood up trying to catch her breath. She was wiping tears from her eyes while trying to settle down. Miyeon wasn’t exactly thrilled to see her best friend react like this. Miyeon was dead serious and she wanted to be taken seriously.

Miyeon walked away from Heewon and stared into space thinking of her new experiment. Would it be a success or would it fail? Did I have a chance of making someone hate me, or is it impossible? I don’t even know what hating feels like, how am I supposed to make someone hate me. These thoughts swarmed her head; this experiment was going to be more difficult than she planned it to be. Abruptly, she felt a pair of hands on her shoulders. Heewon, who had now recovered from her spasm, was beside her. Miyeon pushed her hands away and faced front again.

“Don’t be like that Miyeon-ah. It’s just that the pose you did was hilarious is all.” Heewon said. It wasn’t what she thought though. She thought that the whole idea was ridiculous not just the pose. Miyeon turned around a bit and Heewon smiled knowing she was getting Miyeon’s attention again.

“Really?” Miyeon whispered. Heewon nodded her head.

“I support you fully in this ‘thing’. It could be real fun.” Heewon explained. Yeah, real fun to see you make a fool of yourself, Heewon thought. Miyeon turned around fully with an innocent smile on her face. If Heewon was going to support her, she knew she could succeed.

“Okay! Thank you Heewon-ah!” Miyeon exclaimed. Heewon gave her a grin, what a loser. Miyeon was looking all smiley and hyper. Miyeon looked like a clueless kid, and that is exactly what Heewon disliked. She folded her arms across her chest and cleared her throat. Miyeon stopped being hyper and looked at Heewon.

“So, how are you going to make someone hate you? Or rather, who are you going to make hate you?” Heewon questioned. In her mind, she was thinking, if you be your annoying self, you can make anyone hate you in a second.

Miyeon tapped her fingers on her chin and snapped her fingers a moment later. She held her index finger out and then pointed towards the door. “The next person that walks through that door; that person will be my ‘victim’.” Miyeon was starting to feel butterflies in her stomach. This was making her nervous and excited at the same time. Both Miyeon and Heewon turned towards the door waiting for the ‘victim’.

After ten minutes past, Heewon started to get impatient. When would this person come? She started to tap her fingers on the counter rapidly. Miyeon however was better at being patient. Instead of standing and becoming impatient, she sat down at a table near the door and tried to think of methods she could use. It really depended on the type of person it was though. If it was a person with a temper, she could make them hate her easily. But, if it was a person who was really patient and stuff, it would take longer and it would be more of a challenge.

After forty-five minutes more, Heewon had finally had it. She screamed in frustration. “Time has never gone slower! When will a person come through that-” just as she was about to say another word, the door opened gently and in came a guy. Heewon closed her mouth and jumped in the air. Finally, my waiting is done! She thought.

Miyeon who was by the door had a good look at the guy as he walked in. He was tall and skinny, but had muscles. He was wearing black straight jeans and a white loose t-shirt with a scarf around his neck. He looks absolutely hot, Miyeon thought. Then she focused on his face as he was deciding on where to sit and was standing in the middle of the shop. His dark brown hair fit his face perfectly and was slightly messy. He had pouty lips and big brown eyes. Although he had all these beautiful features, he looked so cold. Like someone who you wouldn’t want to mess with. Miyeon was in luck, this was going to be easy.

Heewon looked at him as well. He was really good looking. Skin like a dolls, eyes and body anyone would envy. But he looked like he would be easily annoyed. Heewon snarled at this. All Miyeon had to do was be her happy self and she would succeed. She rolled her eyes. I should’ve picked someone for her, Heewon thought. She focused her attention on Miyeon. Miyeon looked happy and grateful. Dang it, Heewon thought. Miyeon knew that this person was going to be easy too.

The man finally sat two tables down from where Miyeon was. He sat and started to text on his phone probably waiting for service from the two girls who were supposed to be running the shop. Miyeon closed her eyes and did a little cheer for herself in her mind. You can do it Miyeon! He looks like the easily annoyed type. Just be super happy and enthusiastic, and it will be over soon. Fighting!

Miyeon stood up from her seat and made her way to the man. She plastered a life-is-too-great-so-why-don’t-we-all-just-smile look on her face and prepared herself. She reached the table and the man looked at her. His brown eyes focused on her entirely and then he smiled at her. Miyeon stepped back a bit. His smile is too beautiful! It’s a surprise attack! Miyeon thought. She looked down trying to refocus herself. Calm down, calm down. Miyeon reached for the paper and pen in her pocket. She started to fumble with it and it dropped to the floor clumsily. Embarrassed, she got on her knees and tried to pick them up. Heewon tried to hold in her laugh at the back. What a klutz.

Miyeon picked up the pad successfully, but the pen kept slipping from her fingers. When she tried to pick it up, it always slid a bit further away from her. “Aish.”She mumbled frustrated. Suddenly a hand reached in front of her. She looked up and saw the man picking up the pen for her with a grin on his face. She got up from her knees and held the pad of paper to her chest.

“Here you go.” He said offering the pen back to her. She took it slowly and mouthed a thank you. Heewon started to worry. This guy was being nice. He actually smiled at her. He was a nice guy, not a cold guy. Heewon started to curse in her mind and tried to think of what the outcome would be.

Miyeon was quiet for a second while the man was staring at her gently. Suddenly, her brain came back and she remembered her goal: to make him hate her. She put a big smile on her face and tried to become hyper.

“So what shall it be sir? Can I call you sir? Can I recommend something? The cappuccino is mighty good today! Or how about a large muffin! We have muffins that are the size of the palm of your hand! So, so, so, what do you think, hmm?” Miyeon said rapidly in her happiest voice. Miyeon really didn’t like how enthusiastic this was, but it was necessary. The man looked down at his hand and then looked up at her again. He didn’t seem annoyed at all. This wasn’t working! Both Heewon and Miyeon thought.

“I’ll have a coffee with milk and a blueberry muffin that is as large as my hand.” He said holding up his hand. Miyeon scribbled it on the paper and fast-walked away. Behind the counter, Miyeon pulled Heewon to the back where they couldn’t be seen. Heewon followed her. She wanted to talk to Miyeon as well.

“This isn’t working Heewon-ah. He didn’t get annoyed at my overly-excited enthusiasm. I even got a bit annoyed at my happy voice. What should I do?” Miyeon whispered frustrated. Heewon blew her bangs out of her face and thought. She peeked at him from the back. He looked really hot that was for sure, but what could tick him off? Then something clicked in her mind. Heewon started to get the coffee together with an evil grin on her face. It’s perfect she thought. Miyeon was confused at Heewon’s actions. She tried to think of what Heewon was thinking, but couldn’t figure it out. Heewon then handed Miyeon the man’s order. She then whispered into Miyeon’s ear one word. “Spill.”

Miyeon got it and stuck her tongue out a bit. It was genius. The guy looked like he cared about his clothes a lot. Spilling dark coffee on his white shirt would tick him off for sure. Miyeon marched towards him gripping her hand around the cup’s handle. He saw her coming and smiled at her. It’s a Surprise Attack, Miyeon thought again. She now had a new name for whenever he would smile at her. Suddenly she screeched to a stop five centimetres away from him because of the ‘surprise attack’ and slowly, without her noticing the coffee spilled out because the cup was a bit tilted. In the next few seconds, both Miyeon and Heewon watched the coffee spill onto his shirt in what seemed like slow motion.

As the coffee made its spot on his shirt, Miyeon’s eyes opened wide and she instantly felt guilty. It was a nice shirt after all. She put the cup on the table and bowed. “I am so sorry.” She instantly came back up and started to grab napkins to wipe his shirt. Heewon hit her forehead. You aren’t supposed to apologize dummy! The man just looked at the stain with wide eyes.

Miyeon started to dab the napkins on his shirt feeling hot in the face. She now felt dumb for her actions. She wished she could control time and make it go backwards right then. The stain wasn’t coming out at all. Out of the blue, his hand grabbed Miyeon’s hand stopping her from dabbing his stained shirt. Miyeon looked up shyly at him and bit her lip. He was smiling gently as if to say that she made no mistake at all. Miyeon took her hand back and bowed once again. She turned her back and left the scene hurriedly.

As Heewon watched those moments, she started to steam. She couldn’t believe that this man wasn’t mad that Miyeon got a large coffee stain on his shirt! This guy obviously has issues! Heewon wanted to yell out but had to keep it in. Miyeon practically ran into Heewon when she went into the back. Heewon dodged her just in time though. “Watch it Miyeon-ah! You have some coffee on you and it’s sticky!” She complained.

“Heewon-ah, I messed up! I said sorry and I know I wasn’t supposed to! I can’t go back out there, please save me!” Miyeon cried. She was on her sticky knees giving Heewon puppy dog eyes. Miyeon really was confused, how was she supposed to go out now that he was all soaked with coffee? Heewon rolled her eyes at her pathetic friend. She pulled her up and shoved the muffin he ordered in her hands. Heewon pointed to the front of the store and turned away from Miyeon. You’re on your own. I want to see you fail, she thought.

Miyeon sighed and went back to the front. This sucks, she thought over and over again. I guess I could try and leave one last bad impression on him. She put on a glare and stared him down while walking towards him. He saw her coming and looked shocked to see the glare on her face. Miyeon slammed the muffin onto his table which squished it a little. He jumped a little from the random slam.

“Here’s your muffin. Come back if you ever want to again.” She said cruelly. She turned around but he caught her lower arm. Miyeon turned her body to look at him. He looked at Miyeon’s name tag and smiled. Ah, surprise attack again, Miyeon thought.

“Miyeon-sshi, don’t worry about this okay?” He said pointing at the stain and then he let go of her lower arm. “I’ll be back someday don’t worry.” He said. The man grabbed the pen from her pocket and a napkin from the table. He started to write on it. Miyeon was curious to what he was writing, but she didn’t want to peek. Once he was done, grabbed money out of his wallet and placed the money with the napkin in Miyeon’s hands. He patted her hand and smiled one last time. The words 'surprise attack' flashed inside Miyeon's head. He turned his back and started to walk out. But, right before he left out the door, he turned and attempted to wink at her, which failed. Miyeon tried to hold in a giggle. That was cute, she thought. Realizing that his attempt at a wink failed, he left immediately.

Heewon finally came out and tried to take a peek at the napkin he gave Miyeon. Miyeon brought the napkin up to her face, ignoring the money and stared at the napkin. She smiled at it and then quickly put it down. Heewon, who was suspicious of Miyeon’s sudden happiness, snatched the napkin from Miyeon’s hands, only leaving the money. Miyeon skipped to the back before Heewon could even look at the napkin. What a weird kid, Heewon thought. She finally looked down at the napkin there was a number and a message. It read:
‘Miyeon-sshi, I saw many sides of you today: angry, happy, and clumsy. I hope to see you again soon. Call me, alright? –Jaejoong’

Heewon crunched the napkin in her hand and stuffed it in her pocket. If this ‘Jaejoong’ wanted to see Miyeon again, Heewon was going to make sure things were going to be interesting.
