Chapter 25

- - exploding

Miyeon looked out her window as she finished combing her hair into place. There was a slight drizzle outside as predicted by the weatherman. Rain is lovely, but it should be over soon, Miyeon thought as she looked back into the mirror to take one last look at her outfit. She was wearing a cute graphic tee with green and blue shorts that folded at the ends. Satisfied, Miyeon took her purse and then walked towards Dawn’s room. Knocking on the door, she waited for Dawn to answer.

“Hey, I’m going out okay?” she said through the door. Hearing no reply, she opened the door a bit and saw that Dawn was out already as well. She closed the door and then shook her head. “Honestly, say when you are going out. Never know where you are half the time.” She walked down the stairs and then saw a note at the end of the railing. ‘Unnie, I am out with Dawn-J today.’ Miyeon chuckled a bit at her distrust for her sisters’ actions. Silly me, she’ll be fine, she concluded and then headed out the door putting on her ballerina flats.

Feeling the rain on her head, Miyeon stayed pressed against her house. She tried to look up at the sky but felt a rain drop roll down her cheek. Sighing, she went against the wall again and looked at the time on her cellphone. If she didn’t hurry, she would be late meeting Jaejoong. Miyeon tapped her toe waiting for the rain to stop. According to the weatherman, it should’ve stopped raining by now, she groaned in her head. Finally she turned around and used a key to open her front door to get an umbrella. I am going to make it this time, she thought determined.

Fishing the umbrella out of the closet, she went out the door and headed to the Han River by foot. Miyeon skipped along in the rain a bit enjoying the little puddles that were forming under her feet. She hummed a little and looked at the dull sky. She grinned and then kept walking. People misjudge rain because it can ruin so many things, but truly, rain is beautiful in its own form and way, she thought.

Miyeon stopped at the corner and then looked left and right for any cars. Seeing one near, she waited for it to pass before she crossed. As she drummed her fingers on her umbrella handle, the car came nearer and as she wasn’t looking, Miyeon was pulled in leaving her umbrella on the sidewalk . Shock overcoming her, Miyeon screamed but was muffled by a hand.

“Be quiet Miyeon-ah!” a voice said. Miyeon looked up at her kidnapper and saw Heewon looking at her annoyed. Miyeon shut her mouth and sat up properly. She pulled Heewon’s hand from her lips and then shook her head. Feeling that the car was parked, Miyeon tried to open the door. When she looked back at Heewon as she opened the door, she felt the door coming to a stop as she was opening it. Miyeon turned and saw that the door was blocked by a wall and that the farthest that it could open was too small for her to climb out of. Sighing, she turned back to Heewon and crossed her arms.

Heewon smirked at Miyeon’s pathetic state. You can’t run from me Miyeon, she thought. She poked Miyeon on the arm. “Don’t look so upset. Can’t your best friend just talk to you privately?”

Miyeon uncrossed her arms and then sighed. I have to give her a chance, she concluded. “Okay, what do you have to say?” she said blankly.

Heewon clicked her tongue and shook her head. “My, my, that’s not a nice tone. I just wanted to talk.”
Feeling a bit peeved by Heewon’s playful voice, Miyeon turned completely and stared at her. “Okay Heewon, you have my full attention. What’s the matter?”

“I guess good girls can get angry as well. Well Miyeon, I think you know what’s up,” Heewon said rolling her eyes. Miyeon tilted her head in confusion which caused Heewon to sigh. “Oh geez Miyeon, I’m talking about Jaejoong! Are you going to stop seeing him or what? Like honestly, he isn’t worth your time. You don’t deserve him and you can find another guy to bug.”

Miyeon tightened her fist to control her emotions. Just take it, she repeated in her head. Heewon not getting the hint that Miyeon was ticked, continued on, “I mean really, I don’t think he likes you that much. But if he does, and then gets to know you, he will definitely stop liking you. I mean not to be mean or anything, but you’re not exactly girlfriend material. You’re too nice for your own good and it’s just not right. You’d think that by your age you’d have more substance to your personality and such; guess not though. It’s okay though Miyeon-ah, we shall find super hot boyfriends together.” Heewon was about to pat Miyeon on the shoulder when Miyeon caught her hand.

“Don’t touch me,” she said softly with her head down. Heewon got her hand back and then rubbed it due to the hard grip Miyeon held it with.

“That hurt Miyeon-ah. I have delicate hands you know. Geez, you keep switching personalities. One second, your all goody-two-shoes and the next your this woman with super strength. It’s okay, I will teach you well.” Again, Heewon attempted to lay a hand on Miyeon’s shoulder but Miyeon turned to her fast and showed the anger that was bold on her face.

“I said don’t touch me!” Miyeon exclaimed. Heewon snapped her hand back in fear. “How could you call yourself my best friend when all you are doing is dissing me? A friend is supposed to accept the way you are! I can’t even believe my ears; do you even know what you are saying to me right now? Do you hear yourself when you talk? Heewon-ah, you’re being so fake to me!”

Heewon who was speechless about Miyeon’s little outburst finally recovered and then retaliated. “Are you joking? I am a great friend! I am leading you away from a guy that—.”

“From a guy that will make me happy? Is that what you were going to say Heewon-ah? As far as I’m concerned, Jaejoong cares for me more than you can imagine. Don’t even tell me that Jaejoong doesn’t care, because I know he has put enough effort into showing he does!” Miyeon said expressing her anger loudly.

“That effort shouldn’t be wasted on you! Why must everything good have to happen to you?” Heewon yelled tears at the rims of her eyes. Miyeon quietened at the sight of the wetness of Heewon’s eyes. Heewon closed her eyes for a second to try and regain her cool.

“What?” Miyeon asked quietly.

Heewon blinked and then showed wild eyes. “Everything good always happens to you! You’re Miyeon: the friendly, kind one who has such a good life; the one who is smart and pretty and has a beautiful smile. You don’t know how lucky you are!” Tears started to spill from Heewon’s eyes as she continued. “The way Jaejoong feels for you… I have always wanted to feel that. No guy has ever given those kinds of eyes that have so much love in them to me. I have never felt my heart beat so fast like it was going to explode. I never felt the butterflies that fly crazily in my stomach. Miyeon, you are so lucky that you have someone like that.”

Miyeon blinked and then grabbed Heewon’s hand. “Is that why you did all this Heewon-ah?” Heewon shrugged and then took her hand away from Miyeon. She turned away from her and then went up to the driver who was silently tearing in the front. She whispered into the whimpering drivers’ ear and the driver nodded. He started the car and then slowly pulled away from the wall and then drove back to the nearest street.

Miyeon looked to Heewon. Just as she was about to say something, Heewon spoke first. “You have to be somewhere don’t you? Well go, I’ll be fine. I just need some time. Have fun Miyeon-ah, the lucky loser who has such a loving heart. Unlike me, who just loves hate.”

Miyeon sighed and then opened the door. She looked at Heewon one last time and spoke softly, “Heewon-ah, I forgive you.” She got out of the car and closed the door behind her. Immediately, the car started to drive away from the spot. Heewon looked out the window and wiped the tears that were still falling.

“You kind-hearted babo, I can’t believe I was lucky
enough to be your best friend.”

Miyeon glanced around at her location and then put her purse over her head. It was raining even harder now and she had no idea where she was really. Trying to look for some signs of where she was, she turned ‘round and ‘round. Finally seeing a street sign, she tried to calculate how to get to Hans River. Looking at her cellphone clock once again, she groaned. She didn’t realize how long the confrontation with Heewon and looking around had taken; she was already two hours late for meeting Jaejoong. Trying to get to Han River now would take another forty-five minutes or more. Stomping her foot in a puddle she felt like crying. I blew it again, she thought.

She closed her eyes and then imagines Jaejoong walking home in the rain thinking that Miyeon had stood him up. She looked up and down the streets again determined to find a cab. I can’t let that happen, I need to make it up to him. After ten minutes, she finally saw a cab and hollered it over. She got in splashing water on the leathered seat and landing water onto the carpeted floor. “Han River please and hurry." The driver nodded and drove in the right direction. Miyeon tapped her fingers on her purse and tried to calm herself. I can make it, I can make it, she tried chanting to herself.

As the clock passed by, Miyeon got more nervous and saw that the rain was pounding so hard. There was a part of Miyeon that hoped Jaejoong had gone home due to the weather. Finally at the Han River, Miyeon reached into her purse to find money but found none. The driver who was waiting smiled when Miyeon looked up worried at him. “Don’t worry miss, I got it covered. I have driven you around before and I can tell you have desperate situations. Go and do what you need to do; fighting!” The driver pounded his fist in the air and then whooshed her away. Miyeon bowed and then ran out of the cab slamming the door behind her. Feeling her heart beat, Miyeon searched in the dense rain. She could hardly see anything. Then in the distance she saw Jaejoong sitting by the river soaked with the rain. Miyeon’s eyes widened and she sprinted towards him in a panic.

Hearing footsteps near him, Jaejoong looked to the side to see Miyeon drenched in water running towards him. He smiled and then got up swaying a bit and feeling dizzy. I knew she would come, he thought happily. Once Miyeon was close enough to him and was in speaking distance, Jaejoong could see the sadness on Miyeon’s face. He frowned as well and wondered what was wrong.

“How could you wait for me? How could you wait three and a half hours in the pounding rain for me?” she yelled over the splats of raining hitting their bodies.

“Is there really any need for an answer to that question?” he replied shrugging. Miyeon felt water that wasn’t rain coming from her eyes.

“You shouldn’t have waited for me Jaejoong! I know that everyone deserves second chances but, this is too much! You could have gotten seriously sick by just waiting here!” she exclaimed. Jaejoong came closer to her shaking head. Miyeon felt her vision blur from the tears and rain. “You should hate me for all that I put you through. Don’t wait for me Jaejoong. Forget me and forget the pain I’ve caused you!”

Jaejoong who was only a few feet away, reached out his arms and pulled Miyeon into a tight embrace. Miyeon felt the tears flooding down and was thankful for the rain. Jaejoong snuggled into her and whispered into her ear, “I will wait for you for an eternity if I have to.”

Hearing that Miyeon hugged him back and then felt her heart explode right there. She felt it, she felt it now. The emotions she was trying to hold back for Jaejoong all came exploding in one moment to her. She melted into Jaejoong and felt that indescribable feeling that he wrote about before.

They stayed there for a while until a sound came in the distance. Jaejoong still held Miyeon as he looked to see a figure approaching them. Squinting his eyes to figure out what it was, he finally saw and then felt himself tense up in shock. Miyeon looked as well and covered her mouth with one hand. What she saw was Dawn-M carrying Dawn-J in her arms unconscious.

“We need to get her to a hospital!” Dawn-M sobbed as Jaejoong let go of Miyeon and took his little sister in his arms.
