Chapter 26

- - her miracle

The three of them had gone into Jaejoong’s car and sped all the way to the nearest hospital. Thankfully, it wasn’t that far and it was Dawn-J’s usual hospital. Jaejoong parked his car oddly and then jumped into the back to grab his sister. Miyeon and Dawn-M who were still bound by shock, watched as Jaejoong scrambled to get his sister into the building. He carried Dawn-J in his arms looking down at her frequently as he ran inside. Miyeon and Dawn-M were close behind and Dawn-M was crying intensely.

Jaejoong busted through the door and looked around for some help. “I need a doctor. Help me please!” he yelled in desperation. No one really paid attention to him because they were all busy with their own tasks. Jaejoong walked over to the desk and received a worried look from the receptionist that was there. She stood up and gasped.

“What happened to this child?” she asked looking oddly at Jaejoong.

Jaejoong looked at the person desperately. “Please help her. She’s my little sister and she has leukemia. I don’t know what happened, just please help her!” The receptionist nodded and then paged someone down to get Dawn-J. Jaejoong bowed and then saw two people coming towards him to help. Jaejoong quickly handed her to them with care and then followed as they started to speed to another destination.

During this, Miyeon and Dawn-M tried not to say anything. They really didn’t know what could be said about the situation. A few moments ago, everything was perfect for Miyeon, but that didn’t matter right now. The situation at hand was much more important. She was feeling frustrated that she couldn’t do anything as she followed Jaejoong helplessly. He looked so… actually, she couldn’t even describe how he looked at the moment. There was too much going on on his face to tell what he was thinking. Miyeon figured to not say anything at all for the moment. She looked down at her sister who was still crying and was struggling to keep with them. She looked up again and thought, what happened?

**********************************************************

They had got Dawn-J into a bed and a doctor was immediately by her side inspecting what happened. She was still unconscious and was breathing heavily. All three of them stood by silently to see what the doctor would say. Jaejoong was biting his thumb and staring only at his sister. Miyeon was trying to comfort her sister by hugging her and Dawn-M was wetting Miyeon’s already wet shirt with more tears.

Once the doctor was done he sighed and then looked up at the three. He stuck out his hand and introduced himself. “I’m Dr. Jung Yunho and I must say you are lucky. Good thing you brought her here in such a hurry. It’s going to be a rough night for her considering her leukemia and the fever she is having. But, she should be fine soon hopefully. But may I ask how why she is drenched?”

They all shook the handsome doctors’ hand and then Jaejoong shrugged. “I really don’t know. Dawn-M is the one who brought her to me like that.”

They all looked at Dawn-M who was now detached from Miyeon’s shirt. Her nose was red and her eyes were puffy. She sniffled and then sighed. “It’s my fault, I shouldn’t have let her stay out this long.” They looked at her confused so she continued on. “Truth is, when Jaejoong told Dawn-J that he was going to meet Miyeon again, she called me and insisted that we make sure everything went well. Of course I agreed and stuff, but I didn’t know it was going to rain.” Dawn-M paused for a second as she heard her voice cracking at the end of her last sentence. “We started to wait and then we saw it was raining. I told her that we should just go wait inside somewhere; everything was going to be fine. But, she disagreed and wouldn’t budge from her spot. I really tried to get her to leave but she resisted and then Miyeon-unnie took three hours to get there. When Dawn-J finally saw you two together hugging she smiled and then collapsed. I really didn’t know what to do. I… I…,” she stuttered and then the tears started to flow again.

The three adults patted her back and told her it wasn’t her fault. Miyeon shushed her quietly. “It was my fault really; I should have been there earlier. Don’t cry.” Dawn-M shook her head and then went to a corner to sit in a chair. She sat there tears falling out of her eyes helplessly.

It was quiet in the room and Dr. Jung checked his clipboard. He cleared his throat which made Miyeon and Jaejoong look at him. “I have to go see some other patients now, but I will be back later tonight. I will send some towels to this room so that you can all dry yourselves off. Goodbye for now,” he said and then walked out of the room closing the door behind him. After he left, Jaejoong immediately went to Dawn-J’s side and brought a chair to sit on. He stared at her and a tear fell from his eye.

“Oppa is so sorry,” he whispered quietly. Miyeon feeling it was time for her to say something, cleared her throat.

“Uh, Jaejoong, I think Dawn-M and I will go now. We will come back tomorrow and see you. So bye,” she said and turned her back to see Dawn-M was already up and ready to go.

Jaejoong turned and called out to her, “Miyeon-ah.” She turned her head and tilted it. He got out of his chair and hugged her tightly. She hugged him back and rubbed his back trying to comfort him. “Today has definitely had its ups and downs. Thank you for being that big up in my life. Can you stay with me here?” he whispered into her ear. Miyeon let go of him and shook her head.

“You know I can’t do that Jaejoong. Only one person gets to stay overnight and you’re that person. They won’t allow me to stay and visiting hours are almost over,” she replied holding his hand. He looked at her with pleading eyes but she refused. “I will come back tomorrow and visit. You should stay with your sister and make sure she gets taken care of well. Call me if you want though okay?”

Jaejoong sighed and then let go of her hand. Miyeon gave him a comforting look. She kissed his cheek and then waved goodbye. Dawn-M opened the door and they walked out. When they were out of the hospital, Miyeon called for a cab and they waited for a little before it came. When the cab came, Miyeon looked up at the building and sighed. She hoped with all her heart that Dawn-J would be okay and pull through. The ride home was silent and it was silent when they arrived home and went to bed. As Miyeon laid her head on her pillow and closed her eyes, scenes of Dawn-J in the hospital, Jaejoong and her at Han River and the confrontation with Heewon flooded back to her. She sighed and then cuddled up in her blanket even more. What a day, she thought.

The next morning, Miyeon woke Dawn-M and they headed to the hospital silently. When they arrived, they went straight up to Dawn-J’s room and saw that she was being fed by Jaejoong like a baby. Dawn-M’s face lit up and she ran over to her and hugged her tightly. Jaejoong chuckled and then stood up to stand by Miyeon. She waved at him and then he suddenly pecked her on the lips. Miyeon blushed immensely and then turned to Jaejoong in confusion. “I have wanted to do that for a while now and now I can!” he exclaimed happily.

Miyeon hid her face and then walked over to greet Dawn-J. Jaejoong chuckled and then joined the rest of them that were beside Dawn-J. After five minutes of hugging and greeting, they all took a seat and stared at Dawn-J.

“Why are you all staring at me?” she asked nervously. Her voice was still a bit hoarse and you could tell she was having a hard time breathing, but she was trying to be strong for them.

“We are just happy you pulled through,” Dawn-M laughed. Dawn-J gave a weary smile and then looked down at her hands which were tightly clenched with her bed sheets.

Jaejoong furrowed his brows. “What’s wrong Dawn-J, are you feeling okay?”

She kept her stare at her hands and replied to her brother, “I’m fine, it’s just…,” she paused, “I am supposed to be dead right now.” They all stared at her in shock. They couldn’t even question her because the words wouldn’t come out of their mouths. She continued on hearing the silence, “It’s true. That day that Dawn-M and I did not hang out and I went out by myself, I went here for an appointment. My doctor told me that my condition was getting serious and if I wasn’t careful, I could go over the edge and just die. But, I couldn’t die knowing whether or not you two would end up together. During that time in the rain, I was holding on so hard while waiting. I needed to know and honestly, I’m glad that I held on.”

When I woke up this morning, oppa was still asleep and I paged the doctor. We discussed about my condition and he said that miraculously, I am fine. I am better than fine, I’m getting better. As odd as it may seem, I will be a regular kid again soon. He said it was a miracle that this happened and that I was a lucky kid. He can’t even explain it himself.” Dawn-J looked up at them finally and saw that all of them were crying even her brother. She giggled at their expressions. “Why are you guys crying? I said that I’m getting better.”

Jaejoong got up and hugged his sister. “That is exactly why I’m crying. Miracles are worth crying for.”
