Chapter 3

- - lost number

Miyeon started to think. I made a bad impression on him, so why didn’t he get mad at me yet? And, I even spilt coffee on his nice shirt! Miyeon puffed her cheeks in frustration. This was going to be harder than she thought. Miyeon didn’t know what to think anymore. She looked at the clock to her left: time to go home. Miyeon sighed in relief, it had been a tiring day, she really wanted to go home and sleep.

Miyeon went to get her bag in the back room and saw that Heewon’s bag was already gone. This didn’t surprise her a bit, Heewon always left before Miyeon. With her jacket on and bag by her side, Miyeon started to walk out of the store, locking it behind her. As she looked up from the lock, she saw Heewon trying to fast walk home in the snowy weather. Miyeon smiled at the sight of her best friend drenched in snow. “Heewon!” Miyeon called.

Heewon didn’t want to turn around as she heard Miyeon call her. Heewon left a tad late today and now Miyeon saw her. She left earlier than Miyeon everyday for a reason. If she stayed with Miyeon until closing time that would probably mean walking with Miyeon to the bus stop or something. And, Heewon did not want that.

Instead of turning around, Heewon put her hands in her pockets trying to distance herself from the little person behind her. As she stuffed her hand in her pocket, she felt the napkin still scrunched up like a little ball. Heewon gripped the napkin and grinned. At first, Heewon wanted Miyeon to fail at this little ‘experiment’ of hers. But now, she wanted Miyeon to feel how it was to be hated. She wanted her to feel that someone hated her. Heewon was going to show that being hated isn’t the funniest things ever and she knew that Miyeon would eventually start to feel sad about being hated. At home, Heewon was going to plan some evil things.

Miyeon gave up calling for Heewon. She was too far now. I bet her ears are too frozen to hear me, oh well, Miyeon thought. She snuggled on her tuque and started to walk to the bus stop alone in her thoughts.

As Miyeon stepped into her house, she felt so thankful to the heat inside. She shook off all the snow that had piled up on her and took off her jacket and boots. She called out into the house which belonged to her younger sister and her. “Dawn-ah, I’m home! Did you eat yet?” She waited for her sister to respond. Miyeon didn’t hear any response. She listened for her younger sister. Soon, she heard the television in the living room playing a show. Miyeon walked inside the living room to see her sister with a plate of rice on her lap while watching a variety show.

Dawn looked up at her sister for a brief moment and then turned back to the television. Miyeon raised her eyebrow, “Not even a small ‘hello’ for your sister who pays for everything you do?” If there was one person that Miyeon was annoyed by at times, it was her sister. But that really didn’t count to Miyeon. Sisters fought, it was like a rule. Dawn didn’t respond to Miyeon, instead, she stuffed a spoonful of rice in her mouth and then laughed which made a little rice come out of her mouth.

Miyeon rolled her eyes disgusted. “Can you swallow your food please?”Dawn turned to her with a scowl.

And with rice spitting out of her full mouth bit by bit she said, “At reast ima weating mit!” Miyeon turned her back and started to go upstairs.

“Clean up your rice-spit later and wash your own dishes please!” She yelled to Dawn from the top of the stairs. Dawn didn’t respond, but Miyeon knew she would do what was asked of her. Ever since both their parents died two years ago from a car crash, Dawn had taken more responsibility than before. Miyeon of course, was in charge of everything. Relatives helped them out of course from time-to-time, but Miyeon wouldn’t let them take charge entirely. She said it was troublesome and that Miyeon was taught to be independent. Her parents’ unfortunate death was probably one of the reasons Miyeon started to look on the bright side of everything. At one point, Miyeon was hopeless and then remembered her mother saying to her on her deathbed,

“You must be happy Miyeon. You must always treat yourself and others with respect. I always loved that caring personality of yours. Don’t give that part up, always look on the brightside. I love you honey.” Miyeon took that statement to heart and it truly made her start to function again.

Once Miyeon was in her room, she started on her studies immediately. She was in university doing computer science and was doing great despite working and taking care of her younger sister who was in junior high. She was in her last year already and couldn’t wait to start working at a real job and earning money for sister and herself. Working at the shop was just barely enough to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table.

Just as Miyeon’s eyelids were feeling heavy while reading a paragraph before her, the phone rang. Miyeon jolted up and grabbed the phone that was beside her. The caller ID said ‘Long Distance Number’. Miyeon groaned. It’s another surveying company she thought. Suddenly her mind flickered back to early that day when Jaejoong handed her his number on the napkin. Miyeon wondered for a moment, where did I put that? She felt inside her pockets; nothing. She got out of her chair and went into her bag. She rummaged around searching for the napkin; nothing. Miyeon bit her lip. That number of his was going to become crucial in making him hate her! She needed that number! She stomped her foot, where was it!

Suddenly, Dawn appeared in her doorstep eating a yogurt cup. “Can you not stomp around? I’m trying to watch ‘Star King’ and I can’t hear a thing if you go around with all your foot noises.” Miyeon put her hands on her hips and turned towards Dawn.

“Have you seen a napkin with writing on it? I might have dropped it on my way upstairs.” She asked her sister hopefully. Dawn shook her head. Miyeon groaned in frustration and put her hand on her forehead disappointed.

Dawn rolled her eyes and started to go back downstairs. “Older sisters can freak out about the littlest things.”

Miyeon tapped her chin. Where did I place it? She asked in her mind. Then she snapped her fingers. That’s right; Heewon-ah took it from me and never gave it back! She must have it! Miyeon smiled, my experiment might have some hope after all. She grabbed the phone and pressed speed dial number two for Heewon’s number. She heard it ringing and started to jump around. Please pick up, she exclaimed in her head.

“Heewon here.” Miyeon heard Heewon say. Miyeon did a pump of her fist in the air.

“Heewon-ah, it’s Miyeon.” Miyeon said. When Heewon heard this, she rolled her eyes and sat down on a nearby chair. Whenever Miyeon called Heewon it was usually about something boring.

“Yes Miyeon?” Heewon said examining her nails. Heewon never really listened to what Miyeon said on the phone. The occasional ‘I see’, ‘Okay’, and ‘Really?’ was the only thing she ever said.

“Do you have the napkin that Jaejoong gave me earlier today?” Miyeon asked. Heewon flinched. She didn’t think that Miyeon would notice. Okay Heewon, stay calm, she thought to herself.

“Who is Jaejoong and what napkin are you talking about?” Heewon said coolly pretending not to know anything.

“You know the guy that I am trying to make hate me! And the napkin that he gave me with his number on it. You took it from me earlier and never gave it back. That number will probably help me in trying to make him hate me, so I really need it. Do you remember now?” Miyeon said rapidly. Heewon smiled. So Miyeon was going to use that piece of information for her plan too huh? Heewon reached into her pocket and straightened the napkin. She held it in her hands and grinned.

“Oh that napkin! I think I threw it out in the trash. Sorry Miyeon. But don’t worry, I bet he will come back sometime after he realizes you didn’t call him for a while.” Heewon said trying to seem sympathetic. She heard Miyeon sigh on the other end.

“That’s okay then. I guess you’re right. I will wait until he comes around again. Thanks Heewon, ‘Bye.” Miyeon sighed and hung up. Heewon pressed the end button on her phone and then went to the function for text messages. She started to type out a new message.

“Hi Jaejoong, it’s me Miyeon from the shop earlier today. I am so sorry for the spill today. I hope you can forgive me. Anyways, I was wondering if you would like to meet tomorrow at the park near the shop at noon. Sorry again for the stain! Goodbye. From, Miyeon” Heewon finished the text with a forming plot in her head. She typed in Jaejoong’s number in the receiver’s box and sent the text message. She licked her lips and then felt her phone vibrate to show a text message was received.

The text read: “I’ll be there. And don’t worry about the stain Miyeon. From, Jaejoong.” Heewon put an evil grin on her pretty lips. The fun starts now.
