Chapter 4

- - sisters

Jaejoong stared at his phone in glee and pumped his fist in the air. “Yes, Kim Jaejoong, you the man!” Jaejoong had been pacing around his room ever since he arrived home. He felt a spark inside his heart as soon as he laid his eyes on Miyeon. He was hoping that she would call him or something. He also wished that she didn’t see him as desperate. Some things you just can’t help, right?

When he received her text, he felt like he could fly to the moon. And then, when he texted her back, he tried to stay as calm as possible but was shaking from excitement. He could feel himself buzzing from happiness. He could not get his smile off his lips. He knew she wouldn’t text back, but the fact that she even noticed him and wanted to see him tomorrow was enough to make him feel on top of the world. He suddenly heard a quiet knock on the door. “Come in.” He said not taking his eyes off from the text message.

“Jaejoong-oppa? Is everything okay in there?” A small voice said followed by a gentle cough. Jaejoong took his eyes off his cell phone and looked at his younger sister who was standing in the doorway. He smiled sweetly at his sister and motioned her to come in. His sister took little steps towards him and held her sweater to her mouth covering a cough.

Jaejoong patted his lap and his sister sat on him. As she sat, Jaejoong could barely feel any weight to her. He cradled her a bit making her feel comfortable in his arms. His sister was sick with leukemia and was diagnosed not too long ago. She had her moments when she better and then times when she had to go to the hospital. Her appearance unfortunately was affected by this: she was completely pale and had lost so much weight. Jaejoong had always cared for his sister, and now that she had to be very careful with herself, he was super-protective of her. He didn’t think it was fair that a child of her age was at home sick when she should’ve been in junior high studying. She knew this and loved having her brother beside her. As she sat on his lap, Jaejoong told her about meeting Miyeon and her odd ways.

He was telling her how she kept on changing her attitude and how she spilt coffee on him. She laughed the whole way through and smiled weakly at her older brother’s enthusiastic voice. Then, he showed her the text messages that she and he sent.

“And then Dawn, she sent me a text message saying that she wanted to meet up tomorrow.” Dawn stared at the screen, smiled and looked up at her older brother.

“Good luck with her oppa. From what you say, she seems like a really nice person. Is she pretty?” Dawn said with light twinkling in her eyes.

Jaejoong grinned and pushed Dawn’s hair behind her ear. “She is the prettiest girl oppa had ever laid eyes on.”

Miyeon had absolutely nothing to do on this day off of hers. Heewon was also off today but said she was busy with people. Miyeon sighed and glanced around her room for inspiration of something to do. Nothing struck her mind at all. Then her eyes landed on a picture of Dawn and her. A light bulb went off in Miyeon’s head. Some sister bonding isn’t that bad right? Anyways, Dawn had no school today. She grabbed her bag from her bed and went to find her sister.

“Dawn, you want to go out? It’s really boring at home and- ” Miyeon stopped abruptly because she crashed into Dawn. They stepped away from each other and Miyeon saw that Dawn was holding her bag as well.

“I was about to ask you the same thing. I’m bored to death here.” Dawn grinned then turned around making her way to the door. Miyeon grinned as well. Sisters do think a like at times I guess, she thought.

Heewon sat down at a bench that was very visible within the park. She placed her bag beside her and then took out her compact checking her make-up. She smirked at her reflection, perfect as always. She snapped it shut and then put it back in her bag. Heewon crossed her arms and scanned the park with her eyes. This Jaejoong better not make me wait long, if he does, I am definitely leaving, Heewon thought. Suddenly a new idea popped up in her mind. What if he came and no one was here at all? He would think that Miyeon stood him up and if he tries to text her- I mean me, I won’t answer and he will go away forever! Heewon did a little victory dance in her mind.

She grabbed her bag and planned to leave as fast as possible before Jaejoong came. Just as she turned around to exit the park, she heard someone yell. “Miyeon-sshi, wait up!”

Heewon cringed. People usually mistake Heewon and Miyeon from the back because they look so similar from behind. Heewon disliked this fact so much and wanted to explode anytime someone thought she was Miyeon. Miyeon on the other hand loved the fact that people mixed them up at times. She thought that made them seem like twins or something. Right now, Heewon felt like exploding. She held it in though. She thought, don’t mess up right now. Just stay calm, keep your anger in.

Heewon turned to face Jaejoong with the brightest and fakest smile on her face. But as soon as Jaejoong saw Heewon, he frowned at her. Heewon felt like she could kill him right there. How dare he frown when he sees me, Heewon thought violently.

Jaejoong bowed at Heewon and then turned around searching around the park for Miyeon who supposed to be there. Heewon walked up to Jaejoong and tapped him on the shoulder. As he turned around, she wanted to punch him but didn’t. She bowed and fake-smiled once again. “Are you Jaejoong-sshi?”

He nodded looking at her curiously. “Miyeon sent me to tell you that she couldn’t make it. She said that she had other things to do today and that she could care less about this date.” Heewon said cruelly. Jaejoong widened his eyes and shook his head in disbelief.

Heewon placed her hand on his arm. “It’s okay, Miyeon can be a little stubborn girl at times. But, she said that if I wanted, I can replace her today.” Jaejoong eyed Heewon suspiciously. Heewon tried to look innocent which she apparently pulled off since Jaejoong shrugged and agreed.

“Where shall we go then?” Jaejoong asked seeming uninterested but polite. Heewon bubbled at this. Going on a date with me is an honour! He should be happy that he even gets my attention, Heewon growled in her head. She calmed herself and exhaled. Remember, you are trying to get him to hate Miyeon, this could be your chance, she thought.

“How about we just walk around the park then?” Heewon suggested trying to sound genuine. Jaejoong shrugged at her and tried to put on a smile. Jaejoong was truly upset that it wasn’t Miyeon here with him. But he was more upset about the fact that she said that she could care less about this date. That is what hurt him more. Heewon started to walk in front of Jaejoong. But Jaejoong didn’t take a step forward. He was too caught up in why Miyeon wouldn’t come today. Heewon rolled her eyes and pulled her arm through Jaejoong’s arm and started to drag him around the park.

Jaejoong almost tripped forward as Heewon pulled him along. He felt like he was a dog being pulled by his owner. Nevertheless, he was always told to respect women and never yell at them or be rude to them, so he just followed her trying to think of a way to get back in touch with Miyeon.

Heewon was bored as well. She glanced around the park and tried to think of something to do. Absolutely nothing to do, she thought. She turned around and saw that Jaejoong was in his own thoughts not even paying attention to her. Heewon stopped abruptly and Jaejoong broke out of his trance. He looked at her confused.

Heewon took her arm out of Jaejoong’s and folded her arms across her chest. “You’re thinking about Miyeon aren’t you?” She questioned. Jaejoong licked his lip slightly.
“No, I’m not. I’m just… Can you tell me why she would call me out on a date if she didn’t even plan on coming herself? No offense to you, it’s just… you know…” Jaejoong mumbled slowly getting quieter as he came to the end. Heewon tried to hold back a scowl as she heard Jaejoong mumble. Heewon had wasted time here being with Jaejoong. She could have been going on her own shopping trip or doing something else enjoyable. But no, she had to be here with Jaejoong. Why did she even text Jaejoong to come? She should have just made Jaejoong think that Miyeon threw the number out and never decided to call him.

“You know why she didn’t want to come? It’s because she said that you would probably be a stuck up jerk that only cares about his appearance. She really didn’t want to come. She only sent that text message because I told her to give you a chance. Being the good friend that I am, I told her that you shouldn’t judge. But, she didn’t listen to me and instead told me to come. That is why she isn’t here.” Heewon huffed. Jaejoong’s eyes were wide and sad.

Jaejoong couldn’t believe what Heewon was saying. Miyeon wasn’t that kind of person was she? She wouldn’t stand him up right? What did he know? He had barely even talked to her for five minutes. He hadn’t even laid eyes on her for more than twenty minutes. He shouldn’t have tried to get her attention so quickly, he should’ve kept on coming back to the shop and get to know her more from there. Jaejoong frowned and tried to conceal sadness, but it was very visible to Heewon.

Heewon felt victory ringing in her ears. Jaejoong had to hate Miyeon now. What guy likes being stood up because someone thinks he is self-centered? Heewon smirked and placed a hand on Jaejoong’s shoulder. Just as she was about to say some more words that would make Jaejoong hate Miyeon’s guts, she was interrupted by a shouting person that was nearing them.

“Dawn! Dawn, where did you go?!” Miyeon yelled out for her sister. Miyeon had taken for eyes off her sister for a second to go buy ice cream and Dawn was gone like the wind! Miyeon and Dawn had been in the park for five minutes and Dawn was already missing. She tried searching but had no luck so far. Miyeon was getting terrified of the possibilities of why her sister may be gone. She felt like crying because she was scared for her sister.

“Dawn, Dawn where are you?” Miyeon yelled again. Suddenly she bumped into someone because she wasn’t looking where she was going. Miyeon fell to the ground. She felt that her hand was scraped and looked at it. It was red and some skin had peeled off revealing some blood. That’s not going to be good, Miyeon whined in her head.

“I’m sorry. I wasn’t looking where I was going.” Miyeon quickly apologized looking at the ground.

“Is that you Miyeon-sshi?” Miyeon heard from above her. She looked up and saw Jaejoong looking at her concerned. Miyeon’s eyes widened and her jaw dropped. Just my luck running into him, Miyeon thought. I have to put on my act now. I think I should go with the mean, snobby girl act. Miyeon got up slowly wiping dirt from her butt feeling the pain on her hand.

“I’m fine, no thanks to you.” Miyeon scowled at Jaejoong. Jaejoong smiled at her. Miyeon put pressure on her back foot. Ah, his Surprise Attack! Miyeon thought. But why did he even smile at her? Miyeon was pretty sure she sounded rude just now.

Jaejoong was so glad to see Miyeon again. She looked cute as she fell. He totally disregarded Heewon’s earlier comment about her. Oh, that’s right Heewon, Jaejoong thought. He looked towards Heewon who looked totally shocked. Miyeon looked at Heewon too and smiled brightly.

“Heewon-ah!” She smiled and then looked back and forth between the two. “Wait a second… are you two here together?” Miyeon asked pointing her fingers at the two of them.

Jaejoong looked at her confused. She was the one who called him out, how would she not know that he was going to be here. Before Jaejoong could say something about the topic, Heewon butted in front of him. “Yes, we are. You didn’t want to come, so I came instead.” Heewon said winking at Miyeon. If Heewon was going to be caught in a scheme, she might as well make it seem like she is helping Miyeon too.

Miyeon didn’t get it at first and mouthed a ‘what’. Heewon winked again and eye-pointed at Jaejoong. Something clicked Miyeon’s head. Heewon was trying to help her make Jaejoong hate her, got it, Miyeon thought.

“Right, what Heewon said.” Miyeon said winking silly at Heewon. Heewon rolled her eyes, what a dork. Jaejoong felt hurt again. She really didn’t want to see me? He pouted and looked at the ground. It was silent between the three of them and then Heewon said abruptly.

“Wait, why were you calling for Dawn? Did she get lost or something?” Jaejoong’s head went up. Dawn?

Miyeon hit her forehead. “Oh geez, I have to look for her. She was there one minute and then gone the next! This is what I get for younger sister-older sister bonding!” Miyeon turned her back and was about to start looking again when Jaejoong grabbed her forearm.

“You have a younger sister named Dawn?” Jaejoong asked seriously. Miyeon looked at Jaejoong’s hand that was clenching onto Miyeon’s arm tightly and then looked at Jaejoong’s serious eyes. What was up with him, Miyeon questioned. Then she nodded at Jaejoong’s question.

Jaejoong started to walk forward still holding tightly onto Miyeon’s arm. “Dawn, where are you?!” He called. Miyeon stared at him with shock.

“What are you doing? I’ll look for her myself.” She said trying to shake off his arm. Jaejoong just clenched tighter. But, when he turned around to look at her, his eyes were soft and caring.

“My younger sister’s name is Dawn too. Considering that your younger sister’s name is Dawn, I need to help.” He explained with a grin on his face.
