Chapter 33

The dead phoenix

She didn't know what to do. Her first instinct was to move, but she couldn・t. She was stuck to the spot. She watched as the point of the sword got closer and closer. Michelle pushed her to a side seeing that she wasn't going to move.
Leila fell to the floor, but quickly recovered and stood up. Michelle was engulfed in a tense battle with the two masked assassins. Knowing Michelle needed her help, Leila unsheafed her sword and started fighting one of the blackly dressed men.

The masked men attacked with his entire might, trying nothing more than to kill Leila. On the other hand Leila was just trying to protect herself and had no intention on hurting the man. The masked man swiped his sword at arms length towards Leila, who ducked just in time and sweeped him of the ground with her leg.
Meanwhile, Michelle, who was not that good at martial arts, was at the down end of winning. But the vow to protect Leila strengthened her and urged her to keep fighting.

As Leila swung her sword across the masked men's right arm, it cut a deep red slit. The man pressed his other hand onto the cut, trying to neutralize the pain. Realizing she had hurt the man, her eyes widened and felt guilty. Leila paused in her step.

"I'm...I'm sorry...I didn't mean to...I..."She stuttered, trying to string two words together in her fright.

The masked man looked at her and shook his head.

He laughed and said. :You・re such a naive girl."

With that, he dropped a small round pellet, which busted into smoke, covering their view. It took a while for the smoke to settle and disappear, but when it did, the two masked assassins were nowhere in sight.

Leila watched the blood drip onto the concrete ground from the tip of her sword. Lost in her thoughts. Michelle tapped her on her shoulder causing her to gain focus on the real world once again. Leila turned to look at Michelle and realized she was hurt.

:Michelle, are you alright? You・re hurt!; Leila sheafed her sword and held firmly onto Michelle・s bleeding arm.

Instead of answering her, Michelle asked. :Don・t you see how dangerous it is for you to be in the outside world? Those assassins got pass the royal guards and everyone else in Wah San Pai. They can come back anytime to finish you off. We really should return.;

Leila didn・t hesitate to answer. After her experiences with the word `danger・ ,she understood her situation.

:You・re right. We・ll leave tonight.;

Michelle was startled by her sudden change of mind, but was glad she finally decided to leave. Michelle walked towards the open hallway.

:Well, then. I better get packing.;

Leila watched her disappear around the corner, she was glad Michelle was beside her all along.

The two walked silently into the stone room without the usual thousands of guards following. The king and Raymond came to a stop as they stood in front of the two coffins. One was smaller, a lot smaller, than the other. The coffins laid in the middle of the room. Raymond walked up to the table with all the offerings on and placed more on it, whilst the king looked sadly at the bigger coffin.

The king spoke up. :I・m sorry my dear. I still haven・t told her yet. I know I promised you last year and all the years before that I would. But I didn・t. I know I should・ve told her about you from the start; it would・ve been a lot easier. I can・t stand seeing her when she finds out. She would be so shocked and confused. She and Raymond are the only ones left to remind me of you and Lily.;

Raymond patted his father on the shoulder and spoke up to the smaller coffin.

:Lily, I・m back. Leila・s been her usual self again. You know, getting into dangerous situations and not knowing it herself. You have to keep an eye on her for us. Protect her and keep her happy, like you have for the past years.; Raymond talked to the coffin of his baby sister, Lily, knowing she could hear him.

The two talked to their family whilst waiting, praying, knowing Leila could come home safely.

He listened as his discipline reported his findings in a scared tone. Kenneth held out a slate of concrete which had words engraved into it.

.The phoenixes will stand by the dragon with the bond of blood until it rules.・

That was what it wrote. The king・s brother looked disgusted at it, and within seconds he had totally destroyed it with a punch of frustration.

:Take care of the rest. But this time, make sure nobody, not even a mouse survives.; He ordered.

Kenneth answered to his duty and walked out of the room. Joe looked at what was left of the prophecy slate and started muttering under his breath.

:First in .Hong Chuun・, now in .Leung chow・. If this thing is found anywhere else, people will notice and they・ll start believing. But anyway, with one of the phoenix dead at birth, that scum will not become what he should become. The better for me.; A smirk was plastered across his face.
