Chapter 41

The Eighth king of the Tong Dynasty

Days past without any sudden moves from the enemy. The subject seemed to flow from their minds whilst in the middle of having fun and teasing the new couple. A week past since the night of the wedding and the king's first sign of unhealthiness. During the week, his majesty's face grew paler and paler, only a blind wouldn't be able to tell that he was sick. Leila stayed by his side whenever she could. She looked after him, but couldn't look into his eyes, she was terrified of the sign his eyes gave her. Every time she did, she would be shocked at the death looking darkness that hid inside them.

She didn't need much guessing, the thing she feared the most happened the day after. The king was so sick that it looked like it would kill him if he moved. He laid on the bed, whilst one and another palace doctors took his pulse, none would speak.

"Forget it. Tell them...to go... I know what's happening...to...to my body."

The king managed to stutter out after the 12 doctors came and went. As he said this, Leila, who was beside his bed, bit her lip, refusing to show the tears that would show that she knew what her father meant.
“T
"Tell everyone...to leave. I have something to tell you and Raymond" The king said holding onto Leila's hand.

Leila nodded to the generals that were now staring at her, waiting for what she would say. As soon as they left, Leila and Raymond held onto their father's hands and watched him closely. The king turned to Leila and spoke in a inaudible voice. Leila leaned in to hear what it was that came out of her father's mouth.

"You must...be tired about what I'm going...to say. You are too naive. Don't trust those you...don't know .Please...listen to me." The king added when Leila was about to retaliate. "You are gullible enough to trust your greatest enemy. Don't."

Leila nodded her head rapidly. "I'll try my best father, I promise you." Her eyes were bulking up with tears, stinging them.

The king turned to Raymond and ushered him closer.

"Two things...Raymond. When I pass ...pass away, I want...want to be with your mother and...Lily."

Leila, hearing this was a little confused. She was going to ask who this Lily was and where her mother's tomb was held since her father would never let her go visit her with them. But she held her voice in, thinking this wasn't the time.

"And secondly...keep an eye out...for your si-." before he could finish what he was going to say, the door busted open.

Bowie came running in, puffed. He ran straight towards the bed and stood beside Raymond, who was sitting on the bedside. Leila felted a little dizzy as her older brother brought in the outside air with him. She gripped tighter onto her father's hand.

"Father, you'll be fine. I've called for a doctor from the north I brought back, he'll heal you." He said.

The king suddenly froze, his eyes still wide open. His hands loosened around his son's and daughter's. Leila shook him a little when her father didn't move. Raymond's hand slowly reached itself towards his father's nose.

Outside, shouts calling their father back by the princess alerted the waiting generals of court and the king's family that he was gone, once and for all.

The king's burial was one of the most privatest in the ruling history. Apart from the family of the deceased king and those generals of the first rank, no others were allowed to watch the king's burial. This was also another of the king's words, to protect his beloved wife's and daughter's tomb chamber.

"From the last words of our deceased king." A eunuch announced. "I, the seventh king of the Tong Dynasty, now grant my fifth son, Raymond Tong Lam to be the next inheritance to the throne as the eighth Tong Dynasty king."

Getting up from his kneeling space in front of the eunuch, he received the piece of royal parchment. As he turned around to face the thousands of generals and royal relatives, they all chanted with unison.

"Wong surn man sui, man sui, man man sui!"

Most of the generals were still puzzling over why the deceased king made this choice. Bowie, the second prince, was more experienced on the battle grounds and in court. Whilst Raymond was only a good fighter but has never been in war before and has only been taking part in court discussions since a few years ago not like Bowie who has since at young age. Nicholas Tse, who was in the group of kneeling generals, smiled from the bottom of his heart. He, not like the others, knew exactly why the old king chose Raymond to be the next king and not the next in line-Bowie.
