Chapter 19

Beginning or End?

Leila was shocked by the news, so was Myolie standing beside her. They faced Charmaine with their surprised expression and wide open eyes, hoping they had heard wrong. Their team leader sat watching them, waiting for their reaction, although having known them for so long, knew what was to come.

"You're joking." Leila said, breaking the silence.

Myolie took a look at Charmaine's serious face. "How long have you known?"

Charmaine shrugged. "For a few hours."

The two sighed and leaned back on their seat in front of Charmaine's desk, finally accepting the truth. It came as a shock to them when Charmaine told them about it right after giving them a big lecture on being kidnapped to hide her worried self.

"So what's going to happen now?" Leila asked.

Charmaine smiled seeing they had understood. "I've already informed Sonija and Christine and we've talked about one of you two taking over my place." Charmaine said.

"Us? We can't." Myolie said. "We aren't up to this. Does Lam sir know? Maybe he could take over instead." Myolie suggested.

Charmaine shook her head. "Raymond has a lot on his hands already; another team would break him down." It seems she had thought through carefully and there wasn't another choice. She looked at Myolie. "You've been with the group for a while now and you're used to each member's way of working, they'll accept you easily, but you still lack experience and calm when facing emergencies, that's where Leila comes in, though she is still new to the group." Charmaine explained her choices.

The two sighed, knowing how right she was.

Charmaine continued. "For now, I want the two of you to work together to fill each others gaps and lead the group until we've decided on the one. Am I making myself clear?" Charmaine ended, showing them that she meant her words and there was no turning back.

As if on queue, the two stomped their right foot, lifted their right arm to their forehead and saluted. "Yes Madam."

Raymond was still in his office, going through some files when the N73 mobile laying on his desk sounded. Picking it up, he wondered who was on the other side and unlike he thought, the voice on the other end was unrecognisable, at least, to him it was.

"Hello, Raymond speaking."

The voice on the other end clearly used a voice changing device. "Good afternoon Lam sir, I'm calling to tell you that Ron Ng and Bosco Wong have planned their trade for next week when Louis and Leo are returning to Thailand."

This caught Raymond's attention, knowing the point of the device was to not let anyone recognise the user, he skipped the asking who they were part and into the main point. "How do I know you're to be trusted?"

As if already prepared for the question, the person answered smoothly with more information. "There's going to be more than a trade. You should spend time asking me what and not who I am." The person paused a while before continuing. "Oh, and are you good at history? Because you should check on the Ng and Koo's, you'll find something unexpected." With that, the call ended, leaving Raymond pondering on the caller's words.

Before he settled with a conclusion, the door to his office opened after a triple knock.

"Charmaine asked me to see if you're busy tonight, she has some things to tell you." Myolie said, her voice low and filled with grief. Not knowing what she had been told, Raymond could only frown at her unusual self.

"Do you know what it's about?" Raymond asked, knowing she did from her expression.

Myolie sighed. "It's best if she told you herself tonight. I’ve got to go now." She said turning around. When she was about to close the door behind her, her head popped in again. "Seven tonight at the Swan Lake restaurant."

Raymond was more confused than ever. First the anonymous phone call, now Charmaine has made this peculiar invite. He suddenly started thinking, that there was much more than what he could see and that it seemed he was going to be told a lot of things that he wanted to know...but then again, did he really want to know?"

Myolie frowned as she stepped into the car park. Her eyes fixed on two people on the other side of the area.

"Call me sometime. We should keep in touch you know. I don't care which side we're on, but it shouldn't be in the way of our relationship, right?" Bosco said.

Tavia sighed. "I guess. But it doesn't make a difference. I'm still going to cuff you if I get enough evidence." She said, not willing to admit defeat.

Bosco smiled. "As long as you don't ignore me or pretend that I don't exist, then everything is smooth. I don't give a damn if you're a cop anymore, as long as you're safe. If I find out that you're getting injured or used, I'm not going to let Raymond Lam off that easily, and you know I'm capable of doing what I say." Bosco said, half threatening. His eyes darted over to Myolie for a second before shooing his sister away. "It's time you should get going now."

Tavia nodded and left towards the police station, not realizing Myolie had heard every word of their conversation and seemed to have taken it the wrong way as she stormed off to her car. It only took her a few violent turns of her key and a punch on the steering wheel to have her slamming the door to her car and off to find a taxi.

"Stupid car, breaking down at this moment in time s..."he muttered to herself as she stood by the side of the road, waiting for a passing by taxi.

Just then, a silver Porsche pulled up beside her and the window of the driver's seat slid down to reveal Bosco who hadn't left and watched her like a show, taking in her expression. Bosco could tell easily that she had mistaken him and his sister and couldn't wait to take the mickey out of her feelings that he was determined to make her admit.

"What a lift?" Bosco asked, leaning on the window glass.

Seeing him, Myolie breathed in deeply to hide her temper as she calmly gave a plain smile before moving down the road to carry on waiting for her taxi. But Bosco wasn’t going to take that as an answer as he stepped on the peddle slightly and faced her once again.

"What do you want?" Myolie asked, getting annoyed.

"To give you a lift." Bosco answered.

"I don't need a lift, and certainly not one from you" Myolie said.

"Are you sure?" Bosco started, an evil plan formulating in his head as he spoke. "But I'm here especially for this and if I don't get what I want, I usually get really mean and bitchy and start saying things I really don't want to say, you know, like what happened a few nights ago in that lovely mansion of mine..." He threatened.

"You won't dare." Myolie narrowed her eyes as if analysing the chances of him doing so.

"Well, I don't know. All I wanted was to give someone I like a lift, I didn't mean anything else." Bosco said, acting innocent.

"Okay okay, you can give me a lift already, just shut up." Myolie was at her limit.

"Hop on then." Bosco said.

Instead of taking the front seat, as Bosco thought she would, she moved to the side and took a seat at the back. Although she lost the argument, she wasn't going to loose so badly, sitting at the back would show how she meant giving her a lift as in being the driver, just like in a taxi.

Bosco didn't seem to mind as a smile plastered on his face. He stepped on the peddle and occasionally took glances at the mirror in front to see Myolie staring out the window, lost in her own thoughts.

What Charmaine told her was still swimming in her head.

"Jessica, have you seen my brother around?" Leo asked, walking into the mansion towards his sister in law who was at the table reading a book.

Jessica looked up from her book. "He's upstairs on the phone to Thailand." She answered. "Is it something important you want him for?"

"Well, not exactly." Leo bit his lip and wondered how to put it in words. "It's just that...Jess, you're a girl. You should know why girls act so weird." He seemed to get annoyed as he spoke, sitting himself beside Jessica.

Hearing this Jessica frowned. "Girls? Is there something wrong with you and Nancy?" Jessica guessed, knowing the only girl who could get Leo annoyed would be her.

"Exactly." Leo rolled his eyes. "She's in a huge temper with me for no bloody reason. All I did was asked her what was going on with Bosco and her and she starts going on in a strop about me not trusting her and believing in her" Leo stopped to catch a breath. "Tell me, apart from you, are all women so...so ignorant?" he said, finally finding the word.

"Now now Leo, you can't blame everything on women. From what I've heard from you, it seems to me it's more of your fault you got yourself into this situation." She rolled her eyes when she saw Leo's frown of not understanding. "Don't you see? She's angry that you don't trust her, that you've acted as if you don't care and just thrown her into a position she doesn't want to be in." Seeing that he still didn't get what she meant, she carried on with a sigh. "She had no choice when you told her to get close to Ron and Bosco, she wants you to remember that she's your girlfriend so she's trying to act as if she doesn't love you."

"But that's stupid. She should know this is only for the plan." Leo complained.

Jessica giggled at his remark. "Oh please, of course she knows, but that doesn't stop her from being angry. If I was her, I would be for god's sake." Hearing some sound, she looked up to find Louis walking down the stairs. "Here comes your brother. I suggest you forget about what you've told me, it'll turn out like a joke to him." She said quickly before walking over to encircle Louis's arm in hers.

"What are you two talking about then? Seems like you're enjoying yourselves." Louis said, taking the lead.

"Just some random chat. How was your talk on the phone?" Leo asked before Jessica could mention anything.

"Everything's going according to plan. Now we just have to wait." Louis said with a smirk hung on the corner of his lips.

Leo and Jessica turned to look at him; both with a smile on their face, knowing exactly what will happen and couldn’t wait for the coming week.

"I'm back!" Leila shouted as she stepped into the house. Closing the door behind her she started looking around in search for her brother.

"About time too." Kevin's voice sounded from the kitchen.

Kevin walked out from the kitchen as an aroma followed him and the plate he laid on the dining table. He ushered Leila to take a seat before seating beside her. He signalled her to dig in to the plate of spaghetti knowing she hadn't eaten since last night. Reluctantly, she did so and whilst she filled her stomach, Kevin kept an eye on her and made sure she finished the bowl.

Kevin had originally wanted to ask how she was, but seeing that she made no effort to even inform him of her capture last night, he knew he didn't want him to worry. He threw the thought behind his head and suddenly, something else came up, remembering the shocked face he was facing a few hours ago. "Leila, how is Miss Sheh." Kevin asked.

Leila was a little surprised that they knew each other but remembering what she was told this morning, she concluded it to be too much of a coincident.

Leila looked closely at her brother before asking. "What are her chances?"

Kevin sighed. "I don't know, I seriously don't know." Kevin rested his head in his hands.

Just then, Leila's mobile rang and she hesitated in answering when she read the caller ID. Kevin seeing the look on his face stood up and grabbed her empty plate from the table and left her alone for her call as he cleared up in the kitchen.

Finally deciding it would be best to answer, Leila accepted the call. "What is it?"

Ron's voice sounded on the other end. "Could we have a talk?" His voice sounded sincere; as if nothing had happened and they were still going out, though Leila understand it took him a lot to hide his emotions.

"We have nothing to talk about." Leila's voice was cold, knowing if she sold her emotions, she would sound regretful.

"Please. It won't take too long." Ron sounded as if he was begging, surprising Leila into thinking he must be desperate and this must be very important.

Leila bit her lip a little before answering into the speaker. "Okay, if you say so."

It was clear through the phone that Ron was glad to hear her words as he quickly spoke again. "Great. I'll see you in half an hour at the beach." He then ended the call quickly, not giving her a chance to change her answer.
---------------------------------------------------------------
When Leila arrived, the beach was empty apart from the figure she easily recognised to be Ron standing halfway down the beach staring out into the sea. She approached after a deep breath, clearing her mind and reminding herself who she was and where she stood.

She stood beside him and mirrored his look towards the open sea as they watched the sunset in the distance. They were silent, though here for a talk, they didn't need to use their mouth, in fact; words weren't needed at all, just the presence of each other. However hard the two try to deny it, they had a place reserved for the other deep within their hearts that nobody could replace. They stood side by side in tranquillity for almost an hour before Ron's move shocked Leila.

Suddenly turning, he wrapped her into his embrace and buried his face in her hair as he curled his arms around her petite body.

"Ron..." Worried from his actions, Leila wondered why she did not push him away.

"Don't speak. Please…Just let me hold you like before...for the last time." His last words stabbed her heart, whilst she softened at the second 'please' in the day. Was she really that important in his heart for him to say those words? But then why the last time? Finally, Leila sighed and returned the embrace lifting her arms to wrap around him. Feeling her posture change, Ron held on even more tightly. They both knew that this was their last time, as after this, they were going to have to walk their separate ways.

When Charmaine arrived, Raymond had already taken a seat by the window at the far end of the swan lake restaurant overlooking the lake outside.

"Sorry, I'm late, traffic." She explained, taking a seat opposite him.

Raymond gave a smile and indicated to the drink in front of her-a latte. "Doesn't matter. I've only just arrived anyway." The two had stayed on each other's good side since they had started working together on the 'Crystals' case, being able to see for themselves how capable the other was, a feeling of respect had soon grew within each other.

Charmaine went straight to the subject after the waiter had finished taking their order. "I guess you're quite surprised why I wanted this dinner tonight." Charmaine started. "The thing is. I've got some...not so good news."

Raymond lifted an eyebrow. "You mean bad news then."

Charmaine bit her lip trying to conceal the smiling that was slipping out. "I have Cancer." The way she said it seemed like she didn't care.

On the other hand, Raymond had frozen on her words. He slowly lifted his hand and ran it through his hair, processing the words in his mind. "You're joking." He finally said.

Charmaine broke into fits of laughter hearing this. "You said the exact same thing as Leila did when I told her." She continued laughing, looking not one bit like she meant what she had said earlier. "I mean, really, did it really look like I was joking?" As she laughed, a glitter of tear formed in the corners of her eyes.

Seeing the over happiness in her voice, Raymond frowned and stood up. He made his way to her side as her tears began to slide down her cheeks still masked with the smile and heartless laugh. Standing above her, he moved forward and pulled Charmaine into his hold allowing her tears to drench his shirt. Patting her head, Raymond realised how much courage it took her to go through the day pretending it was nothing. He let her cry and cry until her tears dried out, ignoring the stares of the other customers. Raymond was glad he was beside her as she broke down into the real her.
