“Hello?” Selina greeted as she picked up her phone.
“Hi Selina! Hebe here! Are you at Causeway Bay Shopping center?”
“Haha, yeah! how did you know I’m here?”
“Telepathy!” Hebe replied giving out a laugh.
“Wow, that’s amazing..”
“Want to meet now?” Hebe asked eagerly
“Sure! Where are you?” Selina replied equally eagerly
“I’m at the Starbucks at the first floor!” Hebe replied enthusiastically
“You are here already?” Selina nearly shouted from sheer excitement
“Ye.. yeaah!” Hebe sang out over the phone
“Ok, I’m coming down now! Wait for me!”
“Wherever you are, how long you take, I will be right here… waiting for you..” Hebe sung out
“bye!”
“bye!”
with that, the phone conversation was ended. Somehow, Selina felt happier talking to Hebe over the phone, then Jay, or anyone else. It seemed that, Hebe had became a inseparable part of her life. When Hebe sang that song, which was extracted from a very touching song which she liked very much, at that moment of time, how much did she wish Hebe became a guy, or herself a guy. Silently thinking and smiling, she was absorbing those lyrics into her head, so she will never forget the feeling. in the process, she neglected the presence of her companion.
[Jay & Selina’s Side ]
Jay : Selina.. who was that?
No answer.
Jay : Selina?
Selina(snapping out of it) : Hmm, yeah Jay?
Jay : Who was on the phone? You seem so happy after that phone call...
Selina : Oh, a friend and we are going to meet her now!
Jay : Who?
Selina : You will find out! You know her too!
Jay : Does that mean we are leaving? We hardly started shopping…
Selina : Nope! We are meeting her in here! Come, follow me!
Along the way down the escalators, Selina kept on ranting about this “she”, about how nice she was, how pretty she was, and listing down a whole lot more good qualities about her. Jay was experiencing a slight turmoil. He was thinking the unexpected. He was actually angry with Selina, for neglecting him totally, and keep on talking about someone else. In his head, there was a single thought that prevailed.
“wasn’t this a date between him and her? Why suddenly there’s a third party? And because of her we have to change our schedule? And she keeps talking about her?”
Jay was feeling frustrated. But, he didn’t not let it show on his face, apparently, Selina was pretty much insensitive, and did not feel what Jay was feeling.
[ Hebe & Show ]
“Huh, Hebe? You didn’t arrange to meet her before-hand?” Show enquired with a mystified look.
“No, I didn’t.. why?” Hebe replied not realizing the nature of the question
“Wow.. you can be my Idol..” Show said admiringly
“Why le?” Hebe asked innocently
“You are telekinetic!”
“Haha, just lucky I guess”
They both smiled at the same time, making Show blush, but Hebe was unaffected. Show feared that It was as though, Hebe no longer felt uncomfortable with guys, till a extent where she is no longer interested in guys, and only regard them all as good friends. Show was very confused.. Soon, Selina and Jay reached.
On seeing each other, both Hebe and Selina rushed forward to embrace each other in a hug, as though they haven’t seen each other for a long time, but yet the last time they met was only a few hours back.. They then started chatting happily, as Hebe led Selina back to their seat, with no mention of Jay and Show. Jay stood there, unsure what to do as he saw his date being led away.
“Hi Jay!” a voice boomed from behind
“Huh..?” Jay replied with a strong feeling of frustration
On seeing Show, he changed his tone to a more friendly tone, “Hi Show! How come you are here too?”
“I accompanied Hebe to get a job yeah..” Show replied with a hint of sadness
“What happened? why do you sound so sad?” Jay asked, with a look of concern.
“You don’t sound too happy yourself… what’s wrong with you first?” Show replied.
“Long story.. and you?”
“Long story too..”
“Lets get a drink and chat over it?” Jay asked?
“Sure, the girls will want to be on their own anyway..” Show replied still with that tinge of sadness.
As they approached Hebe and Selina who was originally sitting down, they stood up and walked towards them. Before Jay or Show could say anything,
“We are going shopping!” Hebe chirped
“Shopping we are going!” Selina added
as they both let out a slight giggle, they continued,
“We won’t be needing any lifts home, so see you tomorrow in school!” Selina said in quick succession.
“See you!” Hebe added.
Both of them, flashing a smile at both guys, they turned, and walked towards the escalator, elbows locked, laughing and chatting. Both guys were utterly shocked. They originally decided to try and pop the plan of going off separately, yet they were forestalled, their original speech was gone, they both stood there for a moment, watching them go up the escalator.
“Take a seat bah..” Show offered
As Jay took a seat and they both settled down to the cosy atmosphere of the Starbucks, what was planned to be a afternoon alone with someone they liked, turned out that they were both thrown aside, as both girls they liked, went out with each other.
“Jay, so why were you so angry? Now we’ve got lots of time to talk about it” Show asked with a expression of concern.
“Hmm.. just to cut it short, I feel that Selina is neglecting me over Hebe. I don’t know why I feel like this but… I kind of felt more comfortable with their relationship before Hebe was injured, now their relationship is so close, I feel.. I’m also not sure how I feel.”
“Hmm.. I know how u feel..”
“What can I do? Can u tell me?”
“Nothing much really, I think you have to let Selina know how u feel. Dragging this on, will not only make yourself more miserable, it is also very unfair to Selina as you have reservations about her.”
“I know.. but.. am I supposed to go up to her and say that I don’t like Hebe? She should stop hanging out with her? Given their present relationship, I think I will get a dressing down.”
“Erm…u should tell her how you feel about her, and if she reassures you, then I think you are being slightly over-sensitive. I mean like, they like to have friends of their own gender.” Show’s voice trailed off towards the end.
“What’s wrong?” Jay asked noticing the verbal change.
“My problem is very similar to your problem..”
“Haha, I can guess what’s its about…” Jay said as he flashed a smile.
“Here! A toast to the sad 2 of us.”
[Over at the basketball court]
It was a friendly game between Ella and LH as they slowly strode around the basketball court, netting point after point, laughing at the misses and cheering at the good shots. When suddenly, 2 arrogant looking people came up to them.
“Hey…” The guy’s voice sounded very arrogant.
“Yes?” LH replied politely
“Want a 2v2 contest?” He asked with a hint of contempt.
Looking up, LH saw 2 very rugged looking youths, with a few piercings over their face. What was most appaling was their attitude. LH decided to accept the challenge.
“What is at stake?” LH asked in a challenging tone
“Are you serious?” Ella whispered into LH’s ear.
“Yes” LH declared.
“Woah, Siao eh. Ta kong a sai liao, ka na sai zhe ci ji tao huat cai liao (Wow, friend, he said ok already, (vulgarity)this time we are going to strike it rich)” the guy declared in a very loud voice.
“The stake.. Hmm.. $50.. each.”
“I’m fine with that.”
“Start?” The guy asked with a gleam of arrogance in his eyes.
“Sure, you guys start first” LH offered albeit in a Guai Lan(pissed off and sarcastic) voice
“Yeah! 3 more points and $100 is ours!” The guy exclaimed after his team scored 18 out of the first-to-21 points contest they were having.
“These guys, are newbies!” His partner arrogantly declared.
It was 18 to 6 then, Ella and LH was on the verge of losing, but yet they knew, that those 2 were totally newbies, they were only chilling out. They knew if they decided to play serious, trouncing them 21-0 was no kick. With a nod of a head, Ella signaled to LH that it was time to win back some points. The next few minutes were sensational, silent balls, beautiful dunks, spins and near impossible passes. In less than 3 minutes, the score was back level. With a gleaming look at each other, they synchronized a statement.
“Hmm, wow so easy?”
on hearing their great chemistry, they both let out a low laugh, as they saw their opponent counter-parts being totally silent as they lost a 12 point lead, to losing by 3 points. They quietly put $100 on the bench and walked off, sighing and shaking their heads at each other.
“Haha, wow free $50! Lets go grab a drink!” Ella exclaimed excitedly
“Sure, where shall we go?” LH asked
“Come, follow me!”
Was it chemistry? Or was it just a sheer coincidence, Ella was leading LH to Causeway Bay Shopping center, which was about 2 stops from where they were playing basketball. Impatient at having to wait so long for a drink, LH complained.
LH(slightly annoyed) : Where exactly are we going?
Ella(cheerfully) : Causeway Bay Shopping center!
LH : Why so far?
Ella : There have the best and I mean best milk shakes in the world!
On entering the Shopping center, they saw Jay and Show sitting together, with a expression of loneliness written over their faces. *Starbucks was situated at the entrance. LH immediately went over.
“Hey Jay and Show!”
They both were deep in thought as LH said that, they immediately snapped out of it, and replied hastily.
“Hey LH, why are you here?” Jay asked.
“Ella brought me here!”
“Oh no.. Ella.. those 3 girls..” show moaned
“Why?” LH asked
“wait and see..” Jay replied with a sense of confidence
“Welcome to our club.” Show added almost at the same instant.
LH was clearly clueless as to what was happening, when he went back to Ella who was taking a look at a few shops around, he decided to tell Ella about the conversation.
“Ella,” LH began
“Yes?” Ella replied
“Nothing, lets go grab a milkshake.” LH said, trying to keep Ella away from the fact that Selina and Hebe was inside the building too.
“Okay!”
As they entered the milkshake store, which was very much like a café, LH told Ella to get a seat whilst he did the ordering. Ella complied, as she took a seat near the window, to see the shoppers walk by, it was a rather serene environment, suddenly, a loud laughter broke through the air, and was almost immediately greeted with stares, and returned with many apologies. Ella however didn’t bother to turn round, but Ella realized that the sound came from directly behind her, and the exictedness level of their conversation was getting higher, as their volume kept picking up. Unable to tolerate such irritating behavior in such a serene café, she muttered a vulgarity under her breath as she turned round.
