Standing across the street from the huge mansion, a shiver ran down her spine. There was something about the place that terrified her.
Even from afar, one could sense the loneliness and dangerous aura of the house.
A huge fountain with a half nude lady sat in the middle; with such a marvelous statue, it was hard to go unnoticed. On the sides were beds of roses, which seemed rather, out of place. Something as beautiful truly does not fit in with its surrounding. Especially with the man who owned the place.
She had heard many tales about him. How cold, mean and heartless he was yet at the same time, he was probably the most sought after bachelor. There had been numerous tales about him — so many that she found it hard to keep count of. She did not believe those lies and gossips — they were nothing but words that can not be proven. However, there was one that had stuck to her mind. In order to take over his father’s millionaire company – he had killed his own flesh and blood. Yet she knew it was not true; a little white lie to create adventure and mystery.
The cold, autumn breeze brushed past her as her black hair danced along.
Tavia Yeung took a deep breath, mustering up all her courage.
Nothing had been more nerve-wrecking than this moment of her life.
Tavia knew exactly who the man was and to meet once again after so many years—she had not expected it at all.
Guilty—for the way she treated him in the past. Afraid—he was still holding onto the grudge.
She made her way up towards the front door. Truthfully, she was not ready. If given another choice, Tavia would have never ended up here.
In fact, just a few hours ago. Ron Ng — her best-friend since diaper — had warned her not to go. He said it was not a good idea and there would definitely be another way to solve the problem.
“Don’t sprout nonsense! Who in the world will pay such a huge amount like this? Tavy, this is ridiculous. I will not let you go.” Those were the words he had said when she told him she was going to accept the offer. Protective he was. It annoyed her most of the time, yet she knew he cared for her. He was the best and Tavia could not ask for more.
In the end, she had persuaded him to let her go and defeated as he was, he could not do anything but watch her leave.
Now, here she was standing in front of what could be her worst nightmare. A part of her was already regretting the decision. However, it was too late as her fist came into contact with the wood.
3 minutes later, the door creaked open. She came face to face with an old lady. The lady had on glasses, wrinkles were visible.
“You are?”
Tavia stuttered nervously. “I-I a—“
“You must be the new maid, replacing me.” The woman cut her off, opening the door wider for Tavia to step in. Her eyes widen in shock at how finely decorated the place was. The interior totally contrasted its exterior. At least, it looked more lively although she could still sense the loneliness. “Come, follow me.” Tavia nodded her head at the command as se walked through the hallway where portraits were hung on the walls. One picture caught her attention, it was a family of three. Their eyes staring right back at her, smiles plastered on their face. In the center, stood a little boy. His hair gelled to one side, his eyes dancing with bliss.
“Sit here and wait, I will go call him.”
She nodded and obediently sat down unto the leather arm chair. The woman, whose name she still did not know, had led her to the living room. Her eyes scanned the place; it was extremely neat and tidy, not a single speck of dust was present.
A shadow loomed over her as she jumped up due to the shock. Her heart was racing.
He settled himself down, across from her. Regaining her composure, Tavia sat back down in her seat. His presence suddenly caused the air to become tense. Fidgeting with the rim of her sleeve, she dare not look straight into his eyes.
Not a word was exchanged yet she could feel his intense gaze on her. All the while, Tavia kept her head down.
Suddenly, he threw a blue folder onto the coffee table as Tavia stared at it, perplexed. She looked up, finally, for the first time in years—saw how much he matured. There was no smile on his, something she expected. The man in front of her right now was the total opposite as the smiling boy in that portrait. He stared right back at her, boring into her eyes as if looking into the depths of her soul.
It was enough to tell her, he had not let the past go.
Anger.
Hatred.
She felt it and it really did scare her.
“I’m assuming that you’re agreeing to the conditions written on here.” his eyes darted towards the blue folder, untouched, on the table.
“What conditions?” Tavia had never heard of any ‘conditions’. Her fingers reached out to the folder as she took it within her grasp. Reading thoroughly through the first page, a loud gasp escaped. “This is absurd!” she threw the folder back down, glaring at him. “What are these?” she demanded. “I’m not allowed to speak nor come in contact with any guys except you, unless given permission? Excuse me but I don’t think you have a right to decide which gender I should and should not interact with. This is even more ridiculous, I have to stay under your roof for 4 months and I can not stay outside past 10 PM? I’m not a child, for good-ness sake!”
“I don’t see what’s wrong with them.”
“You have got to be kidding me, Raymond Lam!” she blurted out. “No way am I agreeing to such things!!!” she stood up, ready to leave.
“Really?” he said in a mocking tone. “You might want to reconsider. It’s a once in a lifetime chance. You will not be able to find another job that’s willing to give you such a high pay. If I were you—I’d think fast. It seems like your brother may not hang on for too long.” Tavia bit her bottom lips as he walked right by her. He was clever enough to blackmail her like that.
“Elaine! See Ms. Yeung out.”
“W-wait–I..” Tavia interrupted, she really had no choice. Money—she needed it. “I..agree.” she mumbled softly. Reassuring herself that all she had to do was suffer through this for 4 months and she was freed. Her brother would be saved in the process.
“Don’t back out on your words. You agreed, I did not force you.”
‘Yeah right, as if blackmailing is any better.’ she mentally told herself.
“Yes, I understand.” she answered.
‘It shouldn’t be so bad. At least I have a roof over my head. I don’t think he will do anything to me.’ she thought.
Raymond turned around and faced her.
“If you think I will let you off easily, you’re wrong.” he spoke through gritted teeth as if reading her mind. “The things you’ve done to me in the past, I haven’t forgotten. I want you to go through the pain, the same way I did – Tavia Yeung.”
