Chapter 2

The Party

Chapter 2 | The Party

“WHAT?!” Ron Ng screamed into his cell-phone. “What do you mean you’re going to stay at his house? Tavia! You’ve heard those things about him. He’s not a nice man, Tavia. I will not allow it. You can’t.” Ron panicked at the thought of Tavia staying with another man, besides him. He couldn’t and wouldn’t let it happen.

“Ron—I’ll..I’ll be fine. Don’t worry about me. It’s only 4 months; 4 months will go by quickly.” Tavia assured on the other line, however, Ron did not take her words for it.

“No, Tavy.” Ron pleaded over the phone, but he knew it was not going to work. Tavia had already set her mind to it yet he silently prayed that his persuasion would work.

Tavia sighed. “Ron, please. This is the only way; I have to save Chris. I have to.”

“We’ll find some other way! We don’t need to use his money. I’m currently looking for a job and then we ca—“ he started desperately trying to change her mind.

“How long will it take? You and I both know very well Chris needs the money as soon as possible. I can not let this chance slip by me, Ron. Please understand. I have always listened to you, please listen to me this once. I’ll take care of myself, I promise.” Ron frowned. Her voice – she sounded tired as if she was going to lose all hope if he continued to object her. But 4 months...4 months without Tavia—he didn’t like the idea of that. Nor did he like the sound of her staying with a stranger, especially when that stranger is a man.

“Fine.” he forced himself to say.

“Thank-you, Ron.” she smiled but he could not see. “Oh and don’t call me for the next 4 months, okay?”

Her request alarmed him. “Why not?”

“It’s just that...in the contract..it said I can not have any sort of communications with the opposite gender.” she explained.

“And you agreed to that? Tavia, how am I supposed to survive 4 months without you?” That was the truth.

A soft giggled erupted from her, bringing him into smiles.

“You’ll be fine. Leila will take care of you. Ron–I can’t talk to you for long. I have to go now.” Tavia said and quickly hung up before Ron could utter out a word of good-bye. Dejected, he shut his phone and stuffed it back into his pocket.

“But Leila can not replace you.”

She snapped her phone shut and set it aside. Her eyes darted towards the clock that was hanging on the wall. It read 8:05 PM. She decided that it would still be a while ‘til Raymond gets home, might as well do some cleaning. After all, that was her job.

Today was officially the first day of their contract. Elaine had showed her around the house, told her what to do and what not to do. Soon after, the woman had left with her luggage. Going where, Tavia wanted to know but she did not want to ask and make herself look like a busy-body. It was not her business.

Tavia did not get the chance to go back to Ron and inform the news to him, face to face, thus she had to do it over the phone which wasn’t a bad idea. Knowing very well, that if she was to see Ron in person, he would’ve probably tied her up and kept her in a closet. Plus, Raymond had insisted – more like commanded – her to stay in the house. His men would go and pick up her luggages instead.

Speaking of Raymond, her mind suddenly flashed back to what happened yesterday. The words he said played clearly in her head. It gave her goosebumps as he spoke those words; there was so much hatred, so much vengeance.

Stepping out of her room, she found Raymond staring right back at her, a shopping bag in his hand. She also noticed a young woman beside him, holding onto a box. It amazes her how he could walk without making a darn noise. It surprises her even more that he was already home; it was something unexpected, considering the fact that he had to manage such a big company by himself.

Tavia noticed that Raymond was in a black business suit — all the more, making him handsome and less intimidating.

“Raym–Master..” she corrected herself for in the contract it had stated clearly that she was to address him by ‘Master’. “Did you need something?”

Raymond tossed her the shopping bag in his hand and Tavia caught it just in the nick of time before it came in contact with the floor.

“What is this for?”

“Go change into it. We are attending a party tonight. Fala will you help with your hair.” The girl beside him nodded and smiled.

Tavia’s jaws dropped. “P-party? But I am no—“

“Just do as I say.” he hissed.

She stopped herself from biting back at him. Instead, she sucked it in and did as he commanded. At Raymond’s gesture, Fala followed Tavia inside her room. A while later, Tavia stepped out of her room. On her was a red, silky dress that stopped at her knees. Her hair was professionally done. Fala had wrapped her hair into a bun, holding it together with a fancy clip yet a few curls bounced off at the side.

Tavia felt extremely uncomfortable; she hadn’t worn a dress in so long. She remembered the last time she wore a dress was during prom. Not to mention, her back was revealing way too much – too much for comfort.

“Is there another dress? This one is too...revealing. It doesn’t suit me.” Tavia mumbled, pulling her dress down.

Raymond stayed silent as kept his gaze on her. What did she meant by it didn’t suit her? He had to laugh at that. The dress was made for her – it managed to wrap itself around her curvaceous body. His breath was caught in his throat, for a minute he forgot how to exhale. She definitely had grown. His eyes trailed from top to bottom, examining her carefully. The desire within him, the lust he was feeling; he wanted to stay with her. Locked up in a room. Only the two of them. However, he refused to let himself fall into her trap.

He cleared his throat. “Let’s get going. The limousine’s waiting outside.”

“Must I really attend this party.” she mumbled to herself.

The blinding light, flashing from the cameras held in the hands of paparazzi caused Tavia’s eyes to hurt – forcing her to shield herself. Beside her stood Raymond, a smile on his face, but she could see through that; he was lying. That smile was forced.

As the cameras kept on clicking, questions were thrown their way. Numerous eyes were fixated upon Tavia; she felt intimidated by the huge number of people present, especially the photographers.

“Raymond Lam — is this your new girlfriend?” one reporter asked with a pen and paper in his hands.

“When did this happen?”

“Who is she?”

“Aren’t you dating super-model, Bernice Liu Bik Yee?”

Tavia glanced at Raymond – her insides started doing flip-flops.

Bernice Liu.

Such a beautiful name and she could only wonder what the woman looked like.

Raymond flashed another smile, showing off his whites but did not respond to the questions. Instead, he signaled Tavia to hook her arms around his, in which she obeyed. They began walking down the red carpet. Tavia exhaled deeply, glad that there was no paparazzi within sight. Her eyes scanned the vast place. In every corner, she was able to find a security guard, talking into their device of communications. Strange, but she chose to ignore the matter. Hung above her was a chandelier that lit up the whole room. Surrounding her were men and women in high-fashion, each with a glass of champagne in their hands. A waitress passed by them, offering a cup of the alcohol. She declined whilst Raymond took one for himself.

“Raymond Lam, it is nice to see you here.” A deep, masculine voice spoke. The figure soon appear before their eyes. The guy glanced over to Tavia, she can sense his eyes all over her. Just like what Raymond did, however, the way he was looking at her, there was only one word to describe it — disgusting. Utterly disgusting.

It did not go unnoticed by Raymond. He saw the way Kevin Cheng was lusting over Tavia, thus fury burned within him.

“Found a new girl already? Your taste ain’t bad. What ever happened to Bernice? I thought you were in love with her.” Kevin taunted, his eyes never leaving Tavia.

“She’s here as a replacement for Bernice.” spoke Raymond, exchanging glares with Kevin. Tavia flushed; he had just insulted her, intentionally or not. “What about you? Where’s Niki? Ah – wait, I forgot she ran off with Steven Ma.” Kevin clenched his teeth in anger, but he was unable to retaliate. Raymond had hit his soft spot.

“I’ll get you back for this, Lam.” he threatened, walking further away from Raymond and Tavia.

“Attention please, attention please. The auction for the world’s one and only — Angel’s Tear Drop — will begin now.” Soon after the announcement was made, human bodies gathered around the center, surrounding the podium in which the MC was standing on. The lights dimmed.

‘Auction?’ Tavia thought, surprised. Raymond had not mention anything about this party being an auction.

It was only then did Tavia noticed the stand located beside him and on top of that was a medium sized velvet box. She covered her mouth in shock and little bit of excitement. Never had she seen such a fine jewelry displayed right before her eyes. The sapphire glowed, selfishly bringing all attention so itself. It was shaped like a tear-drop. It’s beauty brought out all the green-eyed monsters in the room. Greed — they all want to claim it as theirs.

“As you can see, this is the only Angel’s Tear Drop in the world. We shall now begin, starting price is $1 million.” Her eyes nearly popped out of its socket. A million dollars — the amount that will take more than half of her life to achieve.

“$1.5 million!” someone called out. Deep within her, she felt jealousy and fury. Sure, the piece of jewelry was beautiful, but to spend a million dollar for it was over the top. If they were so rich, why not donate some of their money to charity?

“$2 million!” Tavia felt like fainting.

“We have a $2 million, anyone else?” The MC asked into his microphone.

“$2.5 million.” She wanted to slap herself awake. Raymond chuckled quietly to himself at the distorted expression on Tavia’s face. Hearing him, she finally comprehended that he had not utter out a single bid. Curiously, she took a peek at him. Other than standing there and staring straight ahead; he didn’t look like he was planning to offer a bid. Why was he here then?

“$3 million!” another shouted, this time it was a female.

“We have 3 million here, anyone else? Going once, going twice....and~” he stretched the word. “SOLD! Congratulations Ms. Li, please proceed to the back and we will hand you over the precious item. And thank-you for all your participation tonight. Better luck next time!” Tavia did not need to see to know there was a victorious smile on the woman’s face. As soon as the auction was over, the crowd dispersed.

Raymond led her out. “I know what you’re thinking.” he spoke without looking at her.

“Then wh—“

“You need to stay out of this.” he cut her off from further questioning.

‘Why did you bring me here in the first place...?’ she mentally grumbled.

They only stepped back into the vehicle when Raymond’s cell-phone rang. Tavia tried her not to eavesdrop, but quite frankly, it was impossible. Not when she was sitting a few centimeters away from him. She watched as he talked into the phone.

“Bring it back to the house.” he spoke firmly, then shut it closed, turning his neck to face her. Caught staring, Tavia looked away, embarrassed.

Perhaps he was right, it was better if she did not entangle herself in his problems.
