Chapter 3

A Piece of the Past

Chapter 3 | A Piece of the Past

“I see.” Leila Tong said in a calm manner, taking a gulp of her strawberry smoothie.

“I see? That’s all you can say? Leila Tong – she is your friend as well, not only mine.” Ron exclaimed in frustration, glaring at Leila.

Leila rolled her eyes at Ron’s exaggeration. “Oh come on. It’s not like she’s never coming back. 4 months, Ron. It’ll go by real fast.”

“That’s what she said.” he mumbled, staring down at the glass table.

Leila felt a pang in her heart. It had always been evident that Ron Ng likes Tavia Yeung, but the girl just doesn’t know – even Leila knew. Obvious as obvious can be. But..what about her? What about her feelings? Tavia was always the first person he worried about, the last person he wanted to see – he was blind to his surrounding besides Tavia. Leila had liked him for as long as he liked Tavia. Everyday, he would pour his feelings out to her, then what about her? Who could she talk to? Definitely not Ron. Definitely not Tavia.

“Cheer-up.” Leila encouraged, nudging his arms.

“How can I cheer up, knowing she’s miles away with some other..man?” Ron whispered, audible enough for Leila to have heard it.

“Look –“ she was tired of his constant whining. “—she’s doing this to save her brother, unless you’re telling me you want Chris to die.”

“No, I want to help him as much as she does.”

“Good. Now suck it up like a man.” Leila declared.

“4 months huh...”

“Personally, I think Tavia is a really lucky girl.” Leila spoke her mind. Ron stared up at her like she had just said something ridiculous. “I mean — getting to stay with Raymond Lam. Gosh – I’d be the first in line.”

“What’s so good about him?” Ron frowned.

“He’s rich, duh!” Leila snapped like the answer was so obvious.

“Gold-digger.” Ron snickered.

“Ron Ng! You did not just call me that! If I’m a gold-digger then what is Tavi..aaaa....” Leila trailed off, noticing the peeved off Ron staring right back at her.

“Don’t ever insult her like that, Leila Tong.”

He was not kidding, his eyes, his tone – they were...threatening her.

‘Millionaire widow - Rain Li Choi Wah - wept at the loss of $3 million worth of jewelry.’

A smirk made its way onto Raymond’s face as he read the headline for today’s news. At the bottom was another caption, this time it read, ‘Raymond Lam – heir to Lam Corps – spotted with new girl-friend’. Underneath the caption was a picture of him and Tavia. Unknowingly, he smiled at the photograph of her.

While he was relaxing himself, Tavia – on the other hand – was working her butt off in cleaning the house. Mansion, to be exact. She had woke-up early in the morning to start on the chores, by now, it was evening yet she was not done. No matter how much she cleaned, it never seemed to be enough and things just kept popping up – waiting for her.

She had just finished dusting off the cabinets in Raymond’s study room. Tavia wiped off the sweat on her forehead as she proceeded to the last room to clean – his bedroom. Thank good-ness it was the last room.

His room was neat and tidy, to her surprise. He was the exact opposite of Ron.

Whenever Tavia stepped foot into Ron’s room, it was like a tornado had hit the place. Socks, undergarments, everything was spread around the room. She would give him a lecture on hygiene, Ron would brush her away with a nod and sadly, Tavia would be the one to clean up his room.

Tavia began to clean the place, not that there was much to clean, anyway. All she had to do was dust a little here, a little over there and she was done. As she was wiping his night-stand, she noticed a small, red box. The shape, color, size – it was so familiar to her, like she saw it somewhere. Without thinking, Tavia reached out for it and opened the box.

A silver bracelet with a heart dangling in the center, stared up at her.

There was nothing extraordinary about it. Heck, it wasn’t even worth a lot. The bracelet was not made of gold or any of that sort. But to her, the bracelet was a piece of their past.

“Here. Take this.” The little boy cried, his hair was gelled to the side. Extending his hand, he handed the pig-tailed girl, the little box. He had used up all his money just to buy her a gift. His own money. Although, it was not expensive, but at the moment, that was all he could afford to buy. This morning, he had prayed to God – hoping that God would be on his side and give him all the luck that he could get.

“What is it, huh?” 7 years old Tavia demanded in a high voice, staring at the item with curiosity.

“It’s a bracelet – do you like it?” he asked nervously, stuffing his hands in his pockets. He did not dare to meet her eyes.

Tavia opened her gift and looked down at the pretty jewelry. Her eyes sparkled.

“It’s pretty.” Her reply made him smile. “Why are you giving me this???”

“I.....” Little Raymond panicked. This was it, he was going to confess to her – he was going to do it. “Ireallyreallylikeyou.” he said it so fast that Tavia could now make out what he was saying.

“Huh?” she stared at him with big, round eyes.

“I..really...really..like...you.” Raymond repeated, slower this time. “I like you.” he confessed bravely and stared straight into her eyes.

Tavia bit her lips. There was a weird feeling inside of her that she couldn’t understand. Without hesitation, Raymond leaned in and gave her a quick peck on the cheek. She blinked her eyes in disbelief and covered her cheeks with both hands. Just then, Ron came running up to them as he tapped Tavia’s shoulder. He did not understand what was going on. He also did not understand why Tavia was talking to Raymond since she had always taken a part in bullying him with a bunch of other kids.

“Tavia..what are you doing?” Ron looked from the fidgeting Raymond to the blushing Tavia. “We’re going to play hide-and-seek, want to come?” Then he stared at Raymond, sticking out his tongue. “You’re not invited!”

Raymond ignored Ron, waiting for an answer from Tavia.

Suddenly, Tavia threw the bracelet back at Raymond – giving him a shock. She crossed her arms over her chest and protested. “Too bad! I don’t like you at all! You’re so ugly! I don’t like ugly people! Why don’t you go play with your rich friends, huh? No one here likes you! Go back!” she shouted and ran away, pulling the clueless Ron along.

Her pig-tails bounced up and down as her figure slowly vanished from his sight.

His tiny heart broke in half at her crude words.

But he was unable to stop himself from liking her.

“What are you doing?” Raymond’s voice snapped her back to reality. Quickly, she placed the box down.

“Sorry..I..uh..I’m done cleaning your room, I’ll leave now.” she stuttered, walking past him, closing the door behind her.

He took a look at the red box, located on top of the night-stand.

The memories — he can’t forget.
