Chapter 4

The Visit

Chapter 4 | The Visit

One week.

Tavia had stayed at Raymond’s place for one whole week. Time was moving too slow for her liking. 4 months seemed like eternity. Yet she was also running out of time. Tavia had received a phone call from the hospital a few days ago; if she wasn’t quick, Chris’ life will be in danger. He needed the heart transplant as soon as possible, but money – the one factor she’s lacking.

For the past nights, she contemplated whether or not she should ask Raymond for the payment in advance. Whenever she opened her mouth to say a word, nothing came out. He’d give her a weird look and walk away – just like that.

Here, she was sitting at the desk in her room, staring into nothingness.

“No...there’s no time left. I have to do it.” whispered Tavia, inhaling deeply.

Without a noise, she quietly descended the staircase. A voice of a man and woman crept its way to her ears. Tavia stopped at the bottom and listened to the conversation.

“When were you planning to tell me this?” the woman’s voice demanded as threw the thick pile of paper down onto the table. Her blonde high-lighted hair was tied up in a ponytail. She was wearing make-up, however, even without make-up, she was beautiful. She was wearing a sleek, black, strapless dress that stopped at her mid-thighs. She could send any guy on his knees with just a wink; she was the closest thing to perfect.

Raymond shrugged and took a sip of his liquor. “I don’t see the need to give you an explanation.”

She scoffed. “Do you know how many reporters I was surrounded by this morning? They kept throwing questions about your new ‘girl-friend’ at me! I had no idea what the heck they were talking about. A notification would’ve helped.”

“That’s part of your job, isn’t it? It’s not the first time you’re surrounded by reporters, Bernice. You should’ve adapted to it by now.”

“What’s wrong with you?” Bernice studied his actions. There was something about him that doesn’t seem right. His actions? The way he talked? Bernice couldn’t put a finger on the reason; something was strange.

“I’m perfectly fine.”

Bernice did not believe him, she moved closer to his side. “Who is she?” she changed the topic, pointing her finger at the photo of the woman with her arms hooked around his.

“Noone important.” he placed his champagne down as he pulled her in closer to him. “Jealous?” Raymond whispered huskily into Bernice’s ear. Their eyes locked. Again, she did not believe him. His eyes, they were boring right into hers - temptation rushed within her.

“I don’t believe you.” she whispered back, using the same tone.

“I don’t need you to.” He nibbled her ears, placing kisses along her jaw-line as he hastily unbutton his shirt.

“No, Ray.” Bernice pushed him away, sensing a third person’s presence.

“What?” he hissed, dissatisfied with her intervention.

“Not today – I’m going to a photo-shoot in less than an hour.” she explained as her fingers buttoned up his shirt. “Plus, someone’s looking for you.” Her eyes glanced in direction where Tavia was standing.

Tavia’s cheeks flushed red as she was caught staring at the two making out.

Raymond looked in her direction. Bernice grabbed her purse. “Well then, I’m off.” Bernice exchanged smiles with Tavia as she walked by and shut the door behind her.

Bernice was making her way towards her car when out of nowhere, a white van pulled up in front of her, someone grabbed her from behind and covered her mouth, afraid that she would scream out loud.

“Get in the car, now!” The person cried, pushing her roughly into the van.

“Hel—“ Bernice wanted to shout, but the same person immediately stuff a rag into her mouth and covered her eyes with a blind fold. Soon, the car drover away.

“What do you need?” Raymond snapped at Tavia.

Tavia opened her mouth, but she was not sure how to put it. “I.......”

He waited for her to continue.

“..”

Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a cheque book and scribbled down an amount. Tavia looked in astonishment, it was as if he could read her mind.

“See if this is enough.” he replied, handing her the cheque.

Tavia gasp at the amount, it was way more than she needed.

“This is too much...“

“Take it. Don’t forget you still have to work here for 4 months.” Raymond stated, heading to his own room, but she stopped him.

“Wait – I have one more request. Is it all right if I go see Chris? At the hospital?” Tavia asked.

He paused. “I’ll take you there.” he finally said with his back facing her.

“Thank-you.” she whispered.

Quiet as she could, Tavia turned the knob to room 144 of the hospital. Sleeping soundly on the white bed was, none other, than her brother – Chris. Raymond had decided to wait outside in the corridors while Tavia visited Chris. A sudden pang of guilt hit her. Chris was more pale compared to the last time she visited him. It was torture to see him in this state. That was going to change – after the transplant, he would be happy again, right?

Accidentally, Tavia knocked into the trash can beside the bed. He stirred and he slowly opened his eyes. She hadn’t meant to wake up him.

He smiled weakly at her. “Hey sis.”

She forced a smile onto her face. “Hey. How are you doing?” Seeing that he wanted to sit upright, Tavia came to his help.

“Fine except being tortured to death by boredom.” he laughed, thus, caused her smile; it was not forced. “Did you see Ron and Leila on your way here?”

“Ron? Leila?” questioned Tavia, seating herself down onto the hospital chair.

“Yeah. They went to buy me food. The hospital food is gross.” he made a disgusted face.

Tavia shook her head. “No, I didn’t see them.”

“Oh, it’s alright. They’ll be back soon.” Chris looked down at his lap. Tavia knew what he was thinking.

“Hey, I got the money for your transplant.” she forced herself to sound cheerful. His head shot up as he looked at her, full of hope.

“R-really?”

Tavia nodded. “Really.”

“But sis, how did you..?”

Tavia looked down. “It’s not important as long as you’re fine.”

“Don’t tell me you borrowed from the loan sharks?” Chris asked, his face all scrunched up.

“No, you think Ron would let me?” she laughed.

“That’s true.” Chris couldn’t agree more.

Hearing the sound of the door opening, they both turned to look at the visitor or rather — visitors.

“Tavia?” Ron and Leila exclaimed in unison.

“Boss, we brought her back.” The same voice that had told Bernice to get into the car, spoke.

She could not see a thing nor could she speak a word. Bernice was sitting on a wooden chair with her hand tied behind her back as she continued to struggle.

A pair of cold hands cupped her face and lifted her chin. Unfortunately, she was unable to see her kidnapper through the blind fold.

“You idiot!!!!” was the next thing she heard and confirmed to her that it was a man. “I did not tell you to kidnap her!” he emphasized the word ‘her’.

“But..but you said to bring back his girl-friend??” trembled a voice.

Bernice screamed but it was muffled by the rag in the mouth.

“SHUT-UP!” the voice boomed, directing it at her. “This is his EX-girlfriend! I want the girl he was with during the auction, you dumbass!”

“Oh...sorry, it’s my fault. I won’t make the same mistake next time.” the person pleaded.

“There better NOT be a next time!”

“W-what do we do now, Boss?”

The boss sighed, “We’ll just have to go with her.”
