Chapter 29

The Last Tide

CHAPTER TWENTY NINE

“What?!” Bosco exclaimed loudly, he noticed a few pair of eyes was looking at him. Bosco quietly left to a corner while holding on to his cell-phone. The person on the line was Raymond. Raymond had just told him that Tavia was in danger, she was not the ‘mole’ and in fact, it had been Linda’s doing all this time. Bosco just couldn’t believe his ears. However, he was still slightly confused because Raymond had only briefly described to him the story. Bosco wanted to know more, but Raymond seems to be in a rush and had no time to continue on. “Where the hell are you, Ray?”

“I need to find her; I need to find Tavia.” Raymond’s voice was filled with determination.

“And how are you going to do that? Do you know everyone’s waiting for you here? Power and Aaron is giving me a freaking head-ache with their bullshit!” Bosco grumbled in discontent. Power and Aaron were always going at each other’s throat. If they were to find a singly, tiny fault that lies within the other person, they would bring it up. They would turn any small matters into a huge catastrophe.

“I’m going to find Kevin Cheng,” responded Raymond calmly.

“That’s like giving yourself up. Who knows what he would do to you!” Bosco retorted; he was worried for Raymond because the last thing he wanted was for Raymond to end up like Sammul.

“I don’t care!” Raymond raised his voice, losing his patience with Bosco. “I have to find her. This is my fault, Bosco! If I had just listened to her; if I didn’t leave her behind like that…If I…Oh god, if anything were to happen to her, I would never…forgive myself. Do you understand?”

Bosco opened his mouth to protest, but couldn’t. He understood how Raymond was feeling because if the person that had done missing was Leila, Bosco would do just the same. Perhaps, he would be even worse since he could not keep his calm, knowing the one he loved was in danger and that she was in the hands of his enemy.

“I’ll talk to you later,” with that said, Raymond hung up before Bosco could say anything else to stop him from his mission. Staring at the phone dumbly, Bosco suspired and felt a throbbing pain in his head. Wouldn’t it be so much easier if they were all free from this? Quickly stuffing the phone back into his pockets, Bosco decided he wanted to help Raymond find Tavia. After all, he was a part of the blame and a simple ‘sorry’ was not enough to save the whole situation.

A cold wave of water was splashed against her and caused Tavia to wake up. Slowly her eyes fluttered open and her senses were coming back to her. She was still in a daze and feeling drowsy from the lack of sleep. She lifted her head up and noticed a seagull flying above her in circles. Suddenly she sensed dampness below her waist and the ongoing crashes of waves hitting against her body. She was a beach, deserted by any signs of humanity.

‘Where am I?’ she thought confusedly.

Tavia tried to move, but panicked when she couldn’t. Frantically looking around her, she recognized the fact that her hands and legs were being tied to a wooden log behind her. Struggling even harder, she wanted to free herself, but it was hard when her four limbs were severely restricted.

‘I need to get out!’ her mind was screaming, yet it was hard to follow.

There were no weapons or tools for her to use in order to save herself. The tide was coming in and sooner or later, if she couldn’t free herself in time, she was going to drown.

Like everyone else, the thought of death frightens her. She needed to save herself, but how?

Unable to do anything, she started grinding the rope against the log, hoping it would wear away and free her hands. She bit back her terror and tried to remain as calm as she could, but tears were already stinging her eyes. And she had to deal with the water continuously sprayed against her face; it was difficult.

Ron nearly fell forward due to the impact of the car as it came to an abrupt stop. They had arrived at a broken, old shack that Kevin had directed them to if they wanted to save Tavia. Wasting no time, Raymond jumped out of his seat and rushed forward. Closely following behind him was Ron. Ron and Raymond were already armed and had their defensive guards up. Kevin was not an easy man to deal with. He had many dirty tricks up his sleeves.

Raymond kicked down the impaired door and entered.

It was quiet and it was too quiet. The area was vacant, except for cobwebs and dusts that filled up every corner of the shack. No one had visited this place for a very long period of time and it was no wonder that it looked the way it did in front of Raymond’s eyes. There was moistness in the atmosphere and the shack did not give off a pleasant smell either. Cautiously, Raymond took one step forward while he was looking out for any unexpected dangers. Every step he took, there was a ‘creaking’ sound that followed.

“Tavia!” Raymond called for her, but unfortunately, there was no reply. He could only hear the echo of his own voice.

Out of nowhere, there was a loud banging and grunting sound from behind and Raymond instantly spun around. However, he was a nanosecond too slow. Ron was being held back by two other men on the floor as he tried to fight his way out. On the other hand, Kevin already had his hands on Raymond. He gave Raymond a punch across the face and a powerful kick in the stomach as Raymond collapsed on the ground; the weapon of defense rolling of Raymond’s hand.

“Augh…” Raymond groaned in immense pain. His cheeks were throbbing and muscles were cramped.

Kevin advanced over to Raymond and without inhibition, stepped onto Raymond’s back. The severe damage manages another moan from Raymond. Kevin didn’t care; he was enjoying the scene. Ron was not doing any better than Raymond, but Kevin’s main focus was still Raymond. Ron could be injured, but Raymond had to suffer it ten times worse.

“You’ve lost, Lam,” Kevin whispered in a teasing voice and bellowed out a maniacal laugh. “How does it feel to be the ‘loser’? How does it feel to have everything you deserve taken away from you? I’ve been waiting for this day. You go to hell!” Kevin picked up a nearby chair with a broken leg and with one steady hit, strikes down on Raymond’s back.

Raymond could feel his whole body vibrate and every cell in his body was weakened by that blow. Raymond’s hand lifted up to the corner of his lips and wiped away the stain of blood. In a hoarse and barely audible voice, Raymond growled, “Where…i-is…she?”

“Relax! We’re going to have some fun first,” Kevin comforted, but it disgusted both Ron and Raymond. Then, Kevin turned his attention to Ron who was being forced down by his men. He shook his head, putting on a fake expression of mercy, “We were such good partners; it’s a shame you decide to side with him at the last minute. I wouldn’t have mind splitting half-half with you, Ng.” Kevin shrugged nonchalantly. “But this is what happens; there’s no such thing as definite loyalty in this society.”

“Go to hell, you bastard! Where is Tavia!?!” Ron glared at Kevin menacingly; if looks could kill, Kevin would have been dead a thousand times and again.

Kevin made a ‘tsking’ sound. “Didn’t I tell you to relax?”

“The person…the person you wanted was me…let her go…damnit!” Raymond groaned, he tried to get back up but Kevin’s foot was still strongly placed on his back. He couldn’t move an inch. “What do you want?!”

“What do I want?” Kevin mocked Raymond and his laughter died down quickly. He repeated in a tone full of hatred. “What do I want? Do you know I could have been in your position right now if you haven’t played dirty and stole the title away from me? I could have been the most glorified leader of ‘Blooded’! You turned my very own uncle against me!” Kevin spat scathingly. He was not satisfied he had to lose to Raymond out of all the people living in this world. Everything Raymond owned was his.

Kevin removed his foot and took a step back from Raymond. “You’re the fault. You’re an eyesore to me; five years ago…five years later…it won’t make any difference. It’s either you or me; there’s not enough living space for the both of us. With you gone, I will take over and I will build a name for myself—“

“You already have a reputation,” Ron interrupted; he didn’t care if he was rude to Kevin. “As a goddamn moron that deserves to rot in hell!”

“Now, now…I wouldn’t be saying that if I were you. Who knows what I would do to your girl if you pressed the wrong button.” Kevin shook his head. “Speaking of which, how does it feel to fall for the same girl…again?” Kevin pretended to put on a thinking cap. “Whatever happened to Bernice Liu? You know…she was a beauty, herself. Very sexy.”

“Don’t talk about her like that!” Ron warned in a threatening voice. He wanted to wipe that perverted smile off of Kevin’s face if he weren’t held back.

“Don’t you hate him?” Kevin questioned Ron and pointed to Raymond. “You hate him, don’t you? You’ve been trying to get back at him all these years, didn’t you? You hate him because he stole your lover.”

Ron clenched his fists.

“I’ll tell you two a secret,” Kevin spoke with mischief written in his eyes.

Ron and Raymond found themselves listening attentively.

“A secret I bet none of you knew…” he trailed off. “She’s lovely in bed.”

“What the fuck!” Ron shouted. “Don’t make up stupid lies!”

“Don’t you fucking talk like that!” Raymond immediately chimes in; his anger was rising with every words Kevin spoke.

Seeing how Ron and Raymond did not believe Kevin, he was even more interested. The game was becoming much more fun for him. “Oh? You don’t believe me?”

“Bernice is not that kind of person!” Raymond was quick to defend as he clenched his teeth. God, he wanted to rip and tear apart Kevin’s flesh and feed it to the birds, over and over again. How on Earth did such a man survive? Life was unfair.

“You say another word of her and I’ll break you in half!” Ron growled, his eyes blazing with rage. “She would never, ever in a million years agree to be with you, let alone sleep with you!”

Kevin threw his head back and laughed crazily. “I never said she was willing, did I?”

Ron and Raymond’s jaws dropped and their eyes widened in complete and utter shock. Kevin…raped Bernice? How was it that they didn’t realize? The memory of her replayed itself like a tape recorder in both men’s head. The break-up and how she had abruptly ended the relationship between her and Raymond just like that. The time when she came home and would always lock herself up in her room. And every night, she would cry and scream and shout as if she was living in a nightmare. Her sudden change of attitude and the happiness seemed to be drained from her soul. The dead look in her eyes was engraved into Ron’s mind. She had no passion and no interests in life; she did everything robotically. It seemed like she was not afraid of death; but in fact, she had been waiting for it. She had welcomed it with her own two arms and finally, Death did come to steal her away.

God, how could they have been so ignorant, so stupid as to not know? She was suffering from depression, but she never told them the reasons. They had tried to help; they had tried…but perhaps, they didn’t try hard enough and this was where it got them. Now, all they could do was suffer through the pain of regrets and indiscretion. But even that had come too late.

He was burning in rage and fury. Raymond gathered all of his energy which was fueled by the truth Kevin had given him and stomped over to Kevin. On the other hand, Ron released all his bottled up anger through the two men that was holding him down. Without a warning, Raymond grabbed onto Kevin and flung him across the floor. It still did not satisfy him, however. He began to kick and punch Kevin without feeling an ounce of guilt. Kevin deserved it. Spotting the bottom of the gun sticking out from Kevin’s pocket, Raymond grabbed it in his hand and directly pointed it at Kevin’s head.

“Go to hell,” Raymond hissed dangerously and coldly. He needed to avenge Bernice’s death.

Before Raymond pulled the trigger, however, Kevin desperately stopped him by saying, “Kill me now and you’ll never find the whereabouts of Tavia Yeung.” Kevin glanced over to one of the men that were fighting with Ron. The man slowly took out his phone and played the recorded video that was on the screen.

Much to their dismay, Tavia was on the screen. She was knocked out unconscious. Tavia was tied back to a log and she was forced to stand in the water, a few meters away from the shoreline. They could see the ocean’s water surrounding her and hear the sound of the crashing waves. It was also evident that the tides were coming in and if they didn’t get to her on time, she would definitely lose her life. They would never be able to see her again.

“Tavia…” Raymond whispered with a tightened heart.

Knowing that he had successfully distracted Raymond, Kevin turned the tables around and forced the gun out of Raymond’s hand into his own. Kevin grabbed a wooden stick and struck Raymond’s head powerfully as Raymond spat out the crimson liquid. Before Kevin could do anymore harm to Raymond, Ron diverted Kevin’s attention with a loud gun-shot but unfortunately, Ron had missed Kevin by an inch. With no hesitation, Kevin aimed at Ron’s legs and hit his target on the second try. Ron wobbled on his feet, but still kept himself up.

As Kevin began to shoot everywhere like a crazy maniac, he was also sneaking away from the scene. Ron realized Kevin wanted to escape and quickly runs after Kevin. He was not going to let Kevin go; he couldn’t. Kevin had to pay the price of what he had done. He had to pay for his sins; he had to pay for causing Bernice’s death.

Raymond wanted to follow, but his head was beating with pain. Blood trickled down his forehead. From head to toe, he was covered in bruises and his energy was depleting at a rapid speed. He tried to stay up on his feet, but his vision was blurring and the world around him began to spin in circles. Although he was unwilling, he couldn’t fight back the agony and collapses on the ground. But before he became fully unconscious, an image of Tavia smiling appeared.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The water was now covering her lips. Tavia had to lift her chin up toward the sky in order to not swallow anymore salt water. She had been trying for so long. Tavia could feel the rope loosening, but she was also getting tired. Gasping for air, she felt like giving up, but she couldn’t. If there was anything that kept her trying was the thought of seeing him for the last time. Even if God wanted her dead, she should at least be given the chance to say ‘good-bye’.

She looked out to sea and coughed vehemently when another wave hit her in the face. She spat out the salty water. Her nose burned when sea water manages to get through into her nostrils.

‘Come on…’ she pleaded mentally.

If she couldn’t get out now, she wouldn’t have another chance. There was no one to save her; she had to depend on herself. The courage in her seems to reappear as she worked hard at freeing herself. Unfortunately, Tavia was just no match for nature’s strength and power. The waves were coming in harder and faster. She felt like suffocating and like there was no air left for her.

Unbeknownst to Tavia, her eyes were red and wet. She didn’t want to die yet.

As if all determination and will-power was sucked away from her very being, her body began to relax. She rested her head against the piece of wooden log and sighed. Suddenly, she was so tired of fighting against nature. She waited for what was to come – the end of her.

“Raymond…” she mumbled quietly to herself.

The water level increased as time passed by and soon, she was completely submerged underneath. It would be the last tide to come in and bring her away.
