Chapter 22

Decisions...

Upon hearing the vibration of the number, Raymond calls out empty air, unable to let out a name.

At that very same moment, Rain had taken the risk and shoved the man’s arm away from anyone’s harm, causing Michelle to fall backwards, knocking her right wrist into Raymond’s car.

Out of reaction, the man turns and aims directly at Rain and fires as she ran towards Raymond and Edison.

Hearing the gun go off, Edison without a moment’s hesitation pulls Rain away, suffering the bullet from behind.

Raymond, reacting just as quick, pulls out his gun and aims for the man, and within one shot, targets the man’s heart.

“Edison,” Rain gasps, as he falls straight into her arms. “Oh my God, Edison,” she continually repeats, not knowing what to do, as Raymond and Michelle stand in their same position, witnessing the situation.

Raymond, standing off of Rain and Edison, looks to Rain, pained.

“It’s all right, the ambulance is coming,” Rain assures Edison, though she knew she needed it more, “You’ll be okay.”

Edison gives his half smile weakly, “I’m going to have to be all right, there are still so many questions you haven’t given me a response to.”

Rain, unable to believe Edison could be teasing at such a time, lets out a manageable laugh. Seeing Edison force a weak laugh as well, Rain looks at him, holding onto him as his wounds continually bleeds. “I can give you one answer right now,” she tells him, “I had let go of lilacs a long time ago. I really love orchids now.”

“Michelle, are you all right?” Raymond worries as he approaches her walking out of the emergency room.

“Yeah, I just sprained my wrist, it’ll heal in a few days,” Michelle relaxes him.

Feeling the awkward silence at the moment, Raymond tries to explain the earlier crisis to Michelle, “Michelle, I know that I disappointed you when I couldn’t decide between you and Rain…”

“It’s all right Raymond,” Michelle interrupts him, not wanting to know what could be a painful truth, “Really, it is.”

Raymond takes Michelle’s hand in his, “No, you have to let me explain, I don’t want there to be any misunderstanding between us.”

Reluctantly, Michelle waits to let Raymond continue.

“The reason I couldn’t choose between you and Rain, wasn’t because I still loved Rain,” Raymond assures, “It was because I am a police.”

Not understanding, Michelle looks at Raymond to continue.

“You have known me for a long time, you know that as a police, I would never put anyone’s life as first or last,” Raymond explains. “As a police, every person’s life is important and is my first priority. Me not being able to choose between you and Rain, was because of that one reason, no other.”

Hearing Raymond’s words, Michelle did not know whether to be comforted or disappointed. Even at such a life and death moment, he had regarded his position as a police first. “Raymond, I…”

“Michelle,” Raymond interrupts her to continue. “I know it will disappoint you that I had looked at the situation as any other case, but I can tell you I didn’t. Because at the very moment, I knew that as Raymond Lam, I choose you.”

Touched by his sincere words, Michelle’s holds back her teary eyes and hugs Raymond, with him returning the hug. As she hugs him tightly, holding onto his words, Michelle could not help but have the seed of doubt.

Weakly coming to consciousness from the bright morning light, Edison sees a worn Rain having fallen asleep in the chair next to his bed. Seeing her resting her face gently on her left hand, Edison tries to help himself up.

Hearing a soft noise, Rain drifts awake, alert on Edison’s consciousness, “Edison,” she acknowledges and assists him in getting up. “How are you feeling?”

Edison puts on a weak smirk, “I’m feeling great,” he tells her. “Never knew how great the feeling would be when I wake up from bed, seeing you by my side, even if it is because I’m in the hospital.”

Rain could not help but laugh lightly to the response, and questions, “I can’t believe that you can still make jokes at such a time.”

Edison then takes Rain’s hand in his, “Then let’s not joke.”

Knowing Edison’s intention, Rain teasingly looks to him, “Let’s not joke about what?”

“The answer you gave me yesterday,” Edison directly asks, as he continues to hold her hand in his, “that you had no longer liked lilacs, but orchids. Do you want to take those words back?”

Rain gives a shy, yet ironic smile, “I don’t think I like taking my words back.”

“Michelle,” Rain signals Michelle, who was at the entrance, to their seats.

Michelle, approaches Rain and takes her seat, “Hi.”

Seeing her sprained wrist, “How is your wrist?”

Glancing at her wrist, Michelle gives a thankful smile, “I just sprained it, it’ll be all right in a few days. How is Edison?”

“Edison is still the same for someone who is in a hospital bed and almost near death,” Rain gives a surrendering smile, then getting to the main topic. “We are actually planning on going to Australia soon.”

Michelle, surprise to the knowledge, “What about Raymond…”

Rain looks at Michelle, “Michelle, don’t have doubts of Raymond’s feelings for you at this point and time.”

Michelle, guilty at the fact of statement, does not respond.

“What Raymond and I have between us will always be there, no matter what happens,” Rain admits to Michelle. “But the reason it will always be there, is because it is the past, and no one can change it.”

Michelle looks at Rain, finally understanding her motive.

“But the future is what you and Raymond hold, something that is more than just a moment that lives in a memory,” Rain assures.

For the first time in a long while, Michelle forms a pure smile of hope, “Thanks.”

“Sergeant Lam,” Edison acknowledges as Raymond walks into the patient room. “I just had my report taken down few minutes ago,” he informs Raymond.

“Yeah, I just saw Matt and Mimi go by,” Raymond acknowledges, “I just wanted to see how you were recovering.”

“Quite well, thanks,” Edison responds, then giving a half smile, “That bullet was well worth it.”

Knowing the meaning behind the response, Raymond reveals, “Rain came to a decision.”

Edison nods, “It may be that the only reason Rain accepted me, because of the bullet, but I can always force myself to think otherwise.”

Raymond shakes his head slowly in disagreement, knowingly tells, “Rain is not someone who will do things out of guilt or pity.”

“Yes,” Edison smiles in agreement to Raymond’s statement, “And I have someone who knows Rain most to reassure me of it.”

Raymond, having driven aimlessly around the silent neighborhood throughout the night, finally stops and parks his car by the dock. Sitting in his car, he looks towards the dock, remembering Rain’s words to him.

“We live in two different worlds. One’s that will never come together, and neither will the people in it.”

Getting out of his car, Raymond starts walking towards the dock. As he walks closer to the edge of the dock, he recognizes the figure whose back was facing him.

Rain turns around to leave, only to see Raymond standing in distance in front of her. As they both look at one another, a smile could not help but form on their expressions.

“I remember this was where we left one another the first time,” Rain recalls the past, as Raymond and her stood alongside the dock.

Raymond looks at Rain, “Is this where we will leave one another the second time?”

Rain smiles knowingly at Raymond, “The fortunate thing for us this time, is that a second time never existed.”

“And it never will,” Raymond acknowledges understandingly.

“Edison and I will be leaving for Australia,” Rain informs Raymond, “Uncle Chun even decided to retire from the business world and hand it down to someone he trusts. I’m not sure when or if we will come back, but I want to wish you and Michelle the best of every tomorrow.”

Raymond gratefully forms a smile to Rain, “Thanks. I wish you find everlasting happiness with Edison.”

Standing in silence, Rain and Raymond look at each other deeply, seemingly to go through every moment that had gone by. With that, Raymond slowly takes Rain in an embrace, as Rain returns the gesture.

“I’m going miss you Rain Lee,” Raymond tells her, grasping onto their last moment together.

Rain, leaning on Raymond’s left shoulder from her right side, holds him tightly, “Raymond Lam, you will always be a part of me, from the beginning until the end.”

Reluctantly, Rain slowly pulls away from the embrace. Looking at Raymond one last time, “Bye.”

Raymond looks at Rain, and knowing that their end had come, “Bye.”

Rain then turns from Raymond and walks from him. Raymond, only standing a moment longer, watching as Rain left, turns the opposite direction and walks off, their distance becoming further, left behind.

The End.
