Chapter 9

“Michelle was right,” Raymond admits, as he glanced to Rain, who was now sitting in the seat next to the sofa. As they continued to sit in the dark, “I don’t treasure her as much as she does me.”

“You can’t measure relationships that way,” Rain says, factually, then softly laughs to the comment. “Ironically, I don’t think I have any right to say that.”

Raymond looks up to Rain from her last comment.

Rain looks back to him, as their eyes once again met.

“You’re officially off the police’s protection,” Raymond tells Rain, who was sitting directly opposite him, in his office.

Rain smiles, “Thanks Sergeant Lam,” she says, rather informally.

Raymond grins questioningly to her reaction, “Am I just sensitive or do you seem rather happy to be off the police’s protection,” he asks, closing the file.

“Don’t know,” Rain replies with a soft smile. “But I do know that I have a lot more cases to follow up on, since being stalled by the protection,” she says, getting up to leave.

Raymond, getting up to escort Rain out of the office, “So, chances are I won’t be seeing you any time soon,” asks Raymond, as he opened the door for her, catching the attention of his department.

Rain turns to him, “You can always call me,” she reminds, as she heads out the double doors.

Raymond, watching as Rain walked ahead, finally left the trance as her image disappeared. Caught off guard, as he turned back around to head to his office, and sees Mimi, Matt, and Lai Sok staring at him. “What?” he asks them, but without waiting for an answer, closes his office door.

As soon as the door closed, Matt shakes his head disappointedly, “Did you see the dazed look in Raymond’s eyes as Rain left.”

Mimi annoyed at the situation, “It’s only been two weeks, there is no way I’m going to buy that their relationship is stable.”

“I’ll have to agree with Matt this time,” Lai Sok sides, “their relationship may not be stabilized, but it definitely has been established.”

As Rain walked out of the police station, she immediately heard a car horn. She turns to her left, revealing Edison, sitting in his car.

“How did you know I was going to be there?” Rain asks, as Edison continues to drive.

“Chun Sok told me,” Edison replies, looking straight ahead.

Rain leans back in the front passenger seat and gives a soft sigh, closing her tired eyes, “I can’t wait to see Chun Sok. Raymond advised me not to be in contact with Chun Sok during the past two weeks.”

Edison, still driving, looks over to Rain for a brief moment, and continues on the road.

Having felt his sudden glance, though eyes closed, Rain asks, “What?”

Not changing position, Edison grins, “Nice to know that the cautious Rain Lee is still in control,” he says with not other explanation.

Opening her eyes, Rain turns her head towards Edison, “What is that suppose to mean?”

Edison casually shrugs it off. “The Rain Lee I knew before two weeks ago, didn’t show much or any emotion to what she thought and said.”

“And the Rain Lee now?” Rain pursues the question.

“The Rain Lee now has put her guard down,” Edison answered.

Rain, realizing Edison was right, looked away to the window, recalling what made the change occur.

As Rain walked past the narrow path down the broken-down, rather filthy shacks, Raymond follows behind her.

“I’m not sure if it is safe to stay here any longer,” Raymond cautions, feeling an unrest and alert from all sides.

“I understand that you are committed to your job in protecting me,” Rain assures, “but I have to as well. This client cannot afford to have her case stalled any longer.”

“I know, but this-,” before Raymond could continue, his fear became reality, as men from different sides of the alley shot out at them.

Without a second’s though, Raymond quickly pulled Rain off to the side as the both of them started running down another path.

Gasping for air as Raymond pulled her into a dark corner, Rain was suddenly hit with fear.

“Rain, you stay right here,” her dad told her, putting his daughter, the age of eight, into a dark corner of a broken-down house, “I’ll be right back.”

“Rain, you stay right here,” Raymond told her, bringing her back to reality, “I’ll be right back,” he said, preparing his gun.

Before Raymond could step out, Rain quickly grabbed his arm, “No, don’t,” she pleaded. “You won’t come back,” she realizes, eyes beginning to form tears.

Raymond, surprised at Rain’s action, but sensing her fear and concern, gently took her hand away. “I will come back,” he promised, looking deep into her eyes.

Still at unease, Rain let Raymond go.

“We’re here,” Edison informs Rain, pulling her out of thought, as he put his car into park.

“Thanks,” Rain says, unbuckling her seatbelt and getting out of the car. Seeing that Edison was not getting out of the car, “Are you coming in?” she asked through the open window on the passenger’s side.

“No, I still have some business to take care of,” Edison explains, “Tell Chun Sok I sent my regards.”

“Okay,” Rain accepts with a smile, heading to the front doors.

Edison, putting his head through his open window, “Rain.”

Rain turns around to the call.

“I don’t know where I stand in your heart now, but I do know that this Rain is much happier,” Edison says, then giving a smile, as he then drove off, leaving Rain lost in his words.
