Chapter 2

"Life is a tragedy for those who feel..."

Jessica got up and sneaked out of the house before her parents got home from work. She had spent the whole day pondering her feelings and nurturing her wounds. She head felt light, for she hadn’t eaten anything since the morning. If only Gallen would come to see her. He had a way with him to lighten up matters. “Life is a strategy for those who feel, and a comedy for those who think”.

Gallen had called one fine day, half teasingly, half sincerely: “Would you trust me and wait for me?”

And Jessica had agreed. She would trust Gallen, and she would trust the love they share to be strong enough. Gallen had told Jessica all about Kenix. He didn't hide anything. Kenix was his first love, and he had placed his whole heart into her lovegame, only for it to be mercilessly shattered. It had been more than a year until the day Kenix decided it was time to offer Gallen an explanation. And she would deliver it personally! What Kenix had in her mind nobody would be able to guess, but Gallen was willing to take the chance. He had wished Kenix happiness on her wedding day. His heart had sincerely gave Frankie and Kenix the blessing, but his mind still tortured him of why she left him in such a sudden and cold-hearted manner. Long-distance! Everybody would chuckled. But Gallen was restless. He simply could not setle on any explanation, unless it came straight from Kenix. And now it was his chance. Jessica sympathized that...

It had been 13 days since Kenix arrived at the airport from Paris. Jessica had naively asked Gallen whether he wanted her help to pick Kenix up. It was the first time Gallen found himself being hesitant. Kenix hadn’t sounded very well on the phone, and the last thing he wished to do was to upset Kenix further. Jessica might be naïve, but she was observant. Hastily, Jessica had made up something about her promise to go with Mother to visit some imaginary aunts. Gallen had just looked deep into her eyes without saying a word. His eyes pleaded her to trust him, and Jessica knew she would. She closed her eyes, as Gallen placed a sweet gentle kiss on her quavered lips. That was his way of telling her everything would be just fine. She believed him.

Yet it had been 13 days without Gallen. It was harder to bear than Jessica thought it would. The green monster visited her not only once. Jessica fought it bravely, but nobody helped her. People would pitifully nod at her, pat her shoulders, tell her to just cry. Jessica did want to cry out loud… The whole world seemed to regard her as the innocent victim. The world saw Don Juan Gallen was happily reconciling with his model-look-alike ex-girlfriend, and everybody had sympathy for the assumingly devastated, heart-broken Jessica.

Jessica missed Gallen miserably. He was probably having dinner with his parents, and of course, Kenix. They would then watch a little TV. Then Kenix would go take a shower, and Gallen would call Jessica. He would ask her what she’d been doing the whole day. Coolly she would tell him about some experiments she was doing at her laboratory. She would mention nothing about what people have been saying, some to her face, some behind her back. Instead, Jessica would tell Gallen to send her regards to Kenix, and wish both of them a good night sleep before hanging up. Gallen didn’t need to know about the verdict her Mother had sentenced him. Times would be on their side, Jessica reassured herself. People would change their minds for the better.

Jessica rolled down her car window. Some lazy breeze played with her hair. Somewhere from the dark surrounding, the green monster silently crept into the car. It sat next to her and with a hoarse voice, started poison her mind…

“They’re in the same room at this very moment, Jessie”

“Gallen has his sense of self-respect, he won’t do anything regrettable”

“How can you be so sure? He’s only a man. Worse yet, he used to be in love with her!”

“But you said yourself he used to. They’re just friends now”

“You’re being impossibly naïve”

“She has a husband, she’s happily married”

“Is he with her now?” “His parents are in the same house”

“And you expect his parents to guard his door days and nights?”

“Go away, I don’t believe anything you say”

“Oh, oh, you’re frightened! You’re frightened because so likely it might be the truth, what I’ve been saying”

“Go away, please!”

“Don’t fool yourself”

“I love him, and I trust him”

“You’re helpless!”

“Please, just go!”

“Fine, but I’ll be back”

“I won’t let you”

“You will, you will, you will”

Jessica decided to get to her laboratory instead of going home. She was not in the mood and had no energy to put up with another talk from her mother. Michelle called and concerned, and Jessica brusquely said she was simply busy at work. Yesterday Mother caught Gallen and Kenix at the food store. That was, clearly, the one and only evidence Mother needed. She’d been listening enough from neighbors and friends and secretly watching a somewhat moody, absent-minded Jessica. Now she confirmed everything with her own shrewd eyes. Gallen failed to see Jessica mother, but the woman had a good idea of what she would do to protect her daughter. Kenix struck her as too modern and aggressive a girl, with well make-up face, stylish clothes, and a dangerously seductive way of talking and walking. Her Jessica had never cared for make-up, she thought with dismay. That boy seemed decent, but just looked at Kenix. That girl was almost a woman, an attractive one. Would that boy keep his head straight? She doubted it. Well, she would do all in her power to prevent him to hurt Jessica.

Michelle called again, worrying. Jessica promised she would be home by midnight.

It would be another sleepless night, she was sure. And there were still 7 longest days to go.
