Chapter 11

On the Track

“Where am I?” Gallen blinked his eyes. His brain was so fuzzy he could not think straight. He remembered stepping into the murky space of the shabby garage. Someone called his name. And then it was all dark.

The pain from his waist came back, now more violently than ever. What was wrong with his body? He could not feel his legs… Gallen jerked his head forward in horror, only to feel another rush of throbbing sensation. He grinded his teeth trying not to cry and fell back onto the hard rough surface again. Gallen realized for the first time he was lying on the cement floor.

In the mid of his agony, Gallen heard the clanking of lock and key, then bright light poured in, causing him to turn his face and wink his eyes. Gallen thought the dark figure at the doorstep resembled someone he knew. He wanted so much to be able to recall, but his brain was cloud with pain. Gallen attempted to open his eyes again, trying to make out the face. It was almost impossible since the light outside was too bright and the room was dark. The figure advanced next to him and without a word, stooped down and sank a needle into his neck. Gallen wanted to protest, but his limps lost its strength and his mind drifted back into unconsciousness.

The second time Gallen woke up, he laid there without open his eyes, waiting for his senses to come back. The room was still dark and Gallen could feel the dampness of the floor. The smell made him relate to that of a basement. The basement of the Wong’s residence did have an unfinished portion, where all the junks were kept. It used to be the boys’ Tom-Sawyer-type of wonder place, with so many things to discover. Gallen smiled at the reminiscences of the good old days, when big brother Felix was one of the gang and not yet become Daddy’s prosecutor. Those days were great.

The more he remembered, the more Gallen thought this was the same place. He couldn’t explain why he ended up here. The only person likely to be able to shred light was the one who came in and drugged him earlier. Gallen smirked ruefully at the thought. What would be the chance of that person to tell him the truth? Now whoever that abducted him might well be the same one he wanted to find, the same one he’d been after.

That person looked oddly familiar…

Gallen was glad the pain had somewhat subsided. At least now he could try to move and find a way to get out of here. Very carefully, he elbowed this upper body up. It hurt! It hurt terribly! Something definitely wrong with his spine! “Now don’t be silly” Gallen breathed heavily and warned himself “You need to stay very still!”

Now what could he do? He couldn’t move. Not likely to be able to move the next day or so. Gallen just hoped the injury was temporary. At least he felt the pain. That was a good sign… Now all he could do was lying very still and think! Yes, at least he could still use his brain when it was not clouded with pain! What was the meaning of all these? Gallen could not relate everything yet. But one thing had been confirmed: he must be on the right track… And his prey had smelled the danger, and had attacked first to get the upper hand.

Gallen didn’t have much time to meditate. Presently he heard footsteps getting closer, then the clanking sound again. At least two people were approaching the door. Gallen’s nerves tensed up… He shut his eyes…

“We’d better bring him to the hospital! He needs proper care!” The male voice spoke, and Gallen startled at the familiarity. As much as he loathed, Gallen found his little theory being materialized.

“Are you insane?” The other seethed. Gallen clutched his fists tighter not to let out a cry, for he recognized the voice. Now he knew why the figure looked so familiar. Why did she speak with such a cold tone? “He should be fine. But we won’t be fine if he is out there!”

“At least get him out of here! The place was awful!” The male voice pleaded.

“No, it’s safer here!” Still the cold tone “You could bring him some blankets if you want. Not that he would feel anything after the injection!”

“I don’t know… He looks like he has a fever!” The male voice seemed unconvinced

“That’s enough!” The other voice was so cold, and Gallen wanted to sob. The naked truth was too much to bear. The voice spoke again: “You know as well as I do that we should get rid of this boy! He knows too much!”

“He’d never done anything to harm you! He won’t do anything!”

“Not after his smart head puts one with one together. I can’t let it happen!”

“What are you doing?” The male voice held a tone of horror…

“Relax! I’m just gonna give him some sedative for now!” The female sneered

Gallen felt the sting as the needle sank once again into his flesh. His mind swirled and his heart ached. It was not even in Gallen’s wildest imagination, that he could suspect to be abducted by this very person.

So it might as well be her who…

Before he could think more, the sedative kicked in.

Nick frowned as he checked his cell phone again. He didn’t feel good. Something must have happened to Gallen, or else Nick should receive the phone call by now. Gallen had never failed to come to Nick whenever he was in trouble. This time should not be an exception. Unless… Unless… Nick shivered at the thought.

“Roger, I’m having this very odd feeling!”

“Yeah?” Roger backed slightly away from the phone. Nick was yelling without even realizing so.

“Roger, we must do something!” Nick insisted “We have to find him!”

“What do you think I am doing?” Roger remarked sarcastically. “It’s now 2 a.m. in the morning and I’m still wondering about a deserted movie set!”

“Oh” Nick was taken aback “Where are you now?”

***

“This is not the best way!” Nick remarked.

“Tell it to my girlfriend!” Roger threw a glance at a distraught Hester “I just mentioned I need some support, and she flung into this madness of a search by turning every stone in this station.”

“Hester!” Nick hollered unceremoniously. “It’s stupid to search like this! Gallen is not a mouse!” He paused, then claimed slowly “And I don’t think he’s running away, do you?”

Roger hit his head very hard. He’d been behaving in the most senseless fashion. Of course Gallen should know better than running and hiding off.

“You’re saying something happened to him?” Roger and Hester exclaimed almost at the same time.

“I think he’s got abducted!” Nick stated firmly

“That’s a wild shot” Roger reluctantly turned the idea in his head “But it’s possible, yes!”

Hester had both hands over her mouth. Fear transformed into tear in her eyes… Roger turned and looked at Hester perplexedly. He would never think Hester would react this strongly. Roger shook his head. Maybe she was just sensitive. Maybe she was just trying to support him. A little too dramatic, but Roger put it down to the fact that Hester was an actress. Actresses did dramatize things.

“I think you should stop by my place” Nick offered. “It’s right at the next intersection. And I have some cognac for Hester”

Roger nodded, and started walking toward his car. Nick lingered a little after to give Hester a friendly pat. “Don’t worry, we’ll find your man!”

Hester startled “Wha.. what?”

“I know Hester. I know you’re seeing Gallen!” Nick smiled mischievously, and immediately felt bad as he saw the look on Hester face… “Don’t worry, I won’t let Roger know!”

***

“Here!” Nick pressed the glass onto Hester’s hand, who sat quietly at a corner of the coach with a bewildered look on her face.

“Hey, come here!” Roger called from the other side of the room. Amid the heap of records and comic books was a sleek Sony Vaio Notebook… “Is this yours or Gallen’s?”

“His… He left it here Sunday night, before he went to pick you up.” Nick jerked his head toward Hester without thinking

“Pick me up?” Roger frowned

“Er..” Nick stammered “not you!… His girl friend! I messed up, sorry!”

Hester opened her mouth as if to say something, but hesitated. She lowered her eyes and fixed it on the little table. Her fingers traced aimlessly around the edge of the cover glass. Just then that Hester spot a little rectangular silver object the size of a chewing gum pack. It stayed neatly in the crack between the glass cover and the wood panel. “What is this?”

Nick spun round “Oh, Gallen’s memory stick!” He snatched it eagerly “He almost killed me the other day when I told him I lost it! I unplugged it to connect the camera and just…”

Before Nick could finish his sentence, Roger snatched the device and plugged it into the little computer. Nick looked loss…

“It must have something important” Roger spot the look on Nick face “Did you just say Gallen almost killed you when he thought you lost it?”

“Oh that’s right” Nick’s eyes lit up “Let’s see… We might find some clue!”

Hester had already come up by Roger’s side. All three looked eagerly at the little blue screen…

“What’s that?” Roger and Nick looked confused

“It’s a script!” Hester said softly “For us to remember our lines, basically!”

“Blah!” Nick did not hide his disappointment. “I thought we could find clue!” He squatted down the floor, tossing the records in his hands…

“Wait…” Something captured Roger’s attention. Nick sprang up on his feet again. Hester saw it too “You guys have scripts hand-written, then scanned onto computer?”

“No, nobody writes script by hands nowadays! Usually they type it and hand us the hard copies” Hester knitted her browns… “And I don’t recognize this script! It doesn’t look like anything Gallen is working on.”

Roger stopped for a moment. Hester knew exactly what Gallen is working on at the TV station? Well, it wasn’t time for that… Roger tried to focus his thought back to the document on the screen… “He scanned it, obviously!” Roger zoomed on the screen. “Not an encrypted document or anything, just a script!” He rolled the mouse down the length of the document… “Nothing here, nothing here… hmmm”

Moment later Roger and Nick strutted down to the kitchen. They felt hungry. Hester refused to join. Sitting in front of the screen, her eyes caught the words…

“Scene 4, act 3:
Pouring rain outside
B: You slept with her? You SLEPT with her?
Y: You left me alone… You ran off, remember?
B: (Sobbing hard) She bears your child, she has your child now... What can I do?

When Nick and Roger came back, they found Hester staring at the screen. Something on her face made her two friends rushed over…
