Chapter 12

On the Track II

Felix couldn’t sleep. After a while trying with no avail, Felix decided to reach for the light switch. He wandered aimlessly out of his room, along the hall, and down the staircase. His footsteps could be heard echoing in the big empty house. Roger had not been home. Mrs. Yung was probably asleep. The old housekeeper had complained about having a headache and excused herself earlier. After dinner, Felix had wanted to check on her, but she didn’t answer the door, obviously dozing off from the affect of the painkiller.

Felix thought he heard some very faint noises at the far end of the house, inside the kitchen. He frowned and walked toward that direction. The murmuring sound silenced for a moment, and came up the next. Felix flipped the light switch.

The kitchen was empty!

The sound was gone.

Felix was perplexed. His mind was probably playing trick on him. Felix turned around and about to walk off as he heard a louder crashing sound, this time right under the kitchen floor. He spun back: The basement!

But again, the basement was absolutely vacant. Not even a soul!

Felix shook his head and pinched his nose. He definitely needed some sleep now. His mind was malfunction. He shook his head harder, and proceeded back upstairs.

As Felix walked by Gallen’s room, he felt something was not quite right. But only when Felix was about to switch off his night light, that he realized what it was. Hastily getting up, Felix rushed back to his brother's place. Pushing back the slightly ajar door, Felix let himself fully inside. The moonlight from the window illuminated part of the desk and a large portion of the hardwood floor. It was the heap of assorted objects on the floor that had captured Felix’s attention earlier.

Felix nodded. Someone must be in here trying to look for something. It was definitely not Gallen to be untidy. The mess in the middle of the room must be the content from the desk drawers. Felix looked around. The door to the closet was also open, piles of clothes pilled out and down to the floor. It was definitely not Gallen who created such a scene. Felix knew how particular this brother was, especially when it came to clothing. Someone must be in such a frenzy search for something important!

Felix stood still inside the unlit room, his logical mind raced through all the possibilities. Who would have access to the house beside the three of them and the housekeeper? Who was here yesterday?

Vivian came right after learning about the news. It was about 6 p.m when he got home. Vivian was already in the living room, distressed. Then Felix had to make a phone call… Vivian was alone for a good 15 minutes. She could, assumable, rushed upstairs, do the search, then get down stair again without Felix knowing.

Then Hester, Roger’s girlfriend, came shortly after that, around 7 and left right before Roger came home. Mrs. Yung was presumably with her the whole time, but Felix couldn’t be sure…

Mrs. Yung went to bed right after Hester left. She didn’t join Felix and Roger for dinner.

Felix stretched his mind trying to recall the sequence of the night. He had a feeling there was something else. There was one additional detail which Felix simply could not recall. It might be very small and irrelevant, but it bothered him nonetheless.

Restlessly, Felix could not find sleep until very late in the night.

Sunray poured straight onto Felix’s face made him wink. He found himself on a strange bed. It took Felix a few second to realize he had fallen asleep in his brother’s room. The room looked disturbingly messy under daylight, more so than it did the night before. Felix chuckled as he got up.

“Ouch! What the heck!” Felix grimaced painfully as he stepped on a sharp object on the floor. Losing balance, Felix fell back onto the bed. The top layer of the mattress got shoved into one side and hit the tall night stand. A little booklet with a brownish cover felt down on Felix head. He scolded softly…

“You’re too early Vivian!” Felix remarked

“Yes Mr. Wong.” Vivian lowered her head to hide her face from the scrutinized look “I came to ask whether you have any news!”

Felix felt his glare softened “You would just call me, you know!”

“I was going to” the girl replied shyly “But I was afraid you might not up yet!”

Felix was about to retort “But when you come to my house, you would have to wake me up anyway!” But for some curious reason, he swallowed the remark back. Instead he found himself asking:

“Do you know how to make breakfast?”

“Yes, of course!” Vivian answered promptly. She was looking desperately for something to do. Anything would be better than waiting around.

Felix enjoyed watching another Vivian, quite different from her office-lady image, as she taking on the task of Mrs. Yung. The air of efficiency was still there. But right here in this kitchen, amid the scrip freshness of the morning, Vivian looked startlingly lovely. A peaceful yet longing feeling took over Felix. He fought it, but reluctantly so. His head warned him she belonged to his brother, yet his heart enjoyed and cherished the new rhythm Felix had never felt before.

Was he falling for his brother’s girl?

“Here, Mr. Wong!” Vivian soft but clear voice brought Felix back to reality. She placed a lovely dish of breakfast treat in front of him, along with a cupful of fresh-brewed coffee.

“Are you joining me?” Felix asked, and startled at the softness of his own voice. He suddenly felt embarrassed, but Vivian was not in a state of mind where she could detect that. She shook her dedicate head…

“Where is Mrs. Yung?” Vivian asked pointlessly, but the question caused Felix to frown.

“I don’t know!” He admitted “She may still feel bad from the headache she had yesterday afternoon."

“Ah, I see” Vivian nodded knowingly “That’s why Mr. Tong was rushing... Probably to get Mrs. Yung some Tylenols..”

“Uncle Chan Yip?” Felix interrupted sharply.

“Yes, he was rushing out to his car as I walked in. I said hello but he didn’t see me!” explained Vivian.

Felix tapped his forehead. Now he remembered. Yes, that was right. When he pulled into the Wong’s gate, Felix did see a very unique tail light of a car from the corner of his eyes. It must be Uncle Chan Yip’s car. So the old secretary must also be here sometimes last night. What baffled Felix was why Uncle Chan Yip visited his house, and why he’d never heard anyone mentioned about that.

Vivian gathered the dirty dishes to be washed, living Felix to meditate next to his refilled coffee. When she’d done, Felix still wore the puzzle look on his face. She waited, but Felix didn’t seem to recognize her presence any longer. Vivian sighed as she picked up a little brownish booklet at the end of the table. Absent-mindedly, she flipped through the leaflets…

But soon Vivian found her eyes glued to the little page, as a heartbreaking tale unfold under her fingers…

~~~
Pouring rain…
B: You slept with her? You SLEPT with her?
Y: You left me alone… You ran off, remember?
...
....
.....
~~~

Vivian lingered on the last one and a half pages of the booklet. They were left blank. She wondered! Yes, she really wanted to know what had happened to the main female character… It was disturbing how the ending was not there…

Just one and a half blank pages staring at her!
