Chapter 16

Along Came A Spider

The policemen swarmed the basement… Vivian looked up to see Felix watching her keenly. In front of them, Roger walked back and forth, apparently in a very agitated state of mind. Presently he stopped in front of Vivian and demanded in a curt voice:

“Autie Yung, she let you in?”

“Yes,” came the quick reply. A little too quick! Vivian simply couldn’t let the brothers know she had broken into their house.

“And she just left? Leaving you here alone?”

“I…She…” Vivian took a deep breath “I told her to just go, because I want to examine the basement!”

“Who gave you the idea?” Felix interjected, eyes still fixed on Vivian. Vivian felt her cheek burned under his stare. She shifted uncomfortably on the tall kitchen stool, and fished in her pocket for the wrinkled copy of the email…

“Immediate higher management may be helpful” Roger read out loud as he threw a glance at Felix “Refer to you I guess?”

Felix took the paper and scrutinized it… He knitted his brows, then cleared his throat before speaking in a grim tone:

“Whoever tipped you off must be from inside Antex, Vivian!”

“Is it the DNA report? What does it say? Is it our guy?” Julian asked, as eager as a little schoolboy

“Yes…” Eddie grunted inaudibly, his face perplexed

“Boss, what seems to be the problem?”

Following Eddie’s finger, Julian saw a neat, small-typed letter O within a box. It stared at the detectives in utmost irony:

“So our Gallen Wong doesn’t have type A blood then!” Julian sighed “It seems we lost the key argument, Boss! If his father is indeed Wong Yat Wah, then there long gone my little “out-of-wedlock son killed to hide secret” theory. No big secret to hide now!”

“So now why did he disappear?” Eddie stroked his jaw “It looks like he got abducted, why? And what make him quit Berkeley all in a sudden? Whose blood test record was shown to his friend, what’s the name…. Nick Cheung?” Eddie turned and lifted an inquiring brow to Julian “I asked you to call Berkeley, have you?”

“I did!” Julian fumbled at the huge pile of file on his desk, then picked up a little notebook, “He was doing just great at the time he quitted. Ranked top five percent in his class! Quite popular, sang, played guitar, soccer, and tennis... Took part in quite a lot of events on the campus. Member of two fraternities, er.. some Greek names I didn’t quite get, sir… No monkey business there, at least none that the school was aware of… Had a girl, quite close, also from the same class…”

“I’d like to talk to the girl!” Eddie nodded

“All Berkeley could give us is a number, supposedly her house. I called but got no answer…”

“What’s her background?”

“Born in HK, but grow up in Eastern US… Fluent in English, French, Spanish, and of course, her mother tongue… ”

“Same class? As in same major? She’s graduated already… I assumed?”

“Yes sir… Last May”

“How long have they been together?”

“Well, I spoke to a Kevin, his roommate…. He said it was a long time, 2, 3 years, maybe… ”

“Look harder for her! She might know a lot more than we think.” repeated the old detective as he walked out of the room. Julian rubbed his temple… He had not the least idea how to trace the girl down. All he had were a name and a number.

“Ray, I’m up to my neck with work, so stop playing!” Julian grumbled into the phone

“I’m not playing!” Raymond sounded indignant at the other end “It might as well be the truth, I don’t understand why you don’t give it a try.”

“Okay, fine! I’ll take a look. Should I stop by your house now?”

“Nope, stay put! I’m already pulling into the station!”

Half an hour later, Julian lifted his head off the monitor and pinned his temples. Ray looked into Julian’s eyes, inquiringly. Julian chuckled:

“You’re right, Ray! Any idea why there’re a skip between page 17 and 20? Page 18 and 19 are not here… Right here, Ray, page 17 ended at the husband accused the wife for adultery…

“Quite ironic, isn’t it?” Ray shrugged “Wasn’t it himself who slept with her cousin?”

“Those two pages” Julian played with the mouse… “They must reveal some foundation on which He could accuse She! She seemed to be famous of running away from the house every time she got upset…”

“That’s right, she did that at least three times…” Ray bit his pencil and looked up to the ceiling, “I did some private investigation, Julian… Want to know how Gallen and Felix ended up motherless?”

“Shoot!”

“Well” Raymond adjusted his pose, looking important “She left the house, together with the cousin and the new-born baby, for a trip back to their home in Peng Chau. But then the cousin came back the next few days without the wife…”

“So, the wife, she just took off like that?” Julian asked in bewilderment “Didn’t even bring the little one, HER little one, with her this time? How old was Gallen at the time she left?”

“Well, about a year and a half?” Raymond shrugged again, “Then she reportedly sent home some letters or postcards… something like that, saying she was sorry and all, and that she was happy with someone… Needless to say, old Yat Wah got heart-broken!”

“Hmmm…” Julian shook his head skeptically “I don’t quite get it… If she was really as cold-hearted a mother as to leave her sons this time, then why had she come back before? It said there…” Julian pointed at the script “that she came back because she could NOT bear parting with her older son, right?”

“Well, listen to me first, Julian!” Raymond cleared his throat “You know, then it was said by her friends that she passed away somewhere in Australia, with pneumonia or something…”

“Ray!” Julian spoke after a while, eyeing his friend keenly “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”

“I was pondering on that for a while, Julian!” A smile crept across Raymond’s face: “It’s your call to run some official inquiries into the movement of the wife after May 1976…” Raymond winked “I wouldn’t be surprised if she’d never been seen after the day she went back to Peng Chau!”

“Would this have anything to do with the husband’s murder just now?”

“Well… You tell me, Julian!” Raymond walked toward the door “Keep me updated, will you?”

“Oh, hold on a minute Ray!” Julian called after, waving a thin folder..

“What?”

“The file you asked me to steal from Sulky’s Face office. Return it tomorrow morning, or all you see will be my lifeless body!”

“Got it, buddy!” Raymond shoved the thin file into the inner pocket of his jacket, and rushed out.

Julian sat down and stared at the blinking monitor… New leads, yet he didn’t know where to start… Everything must convert at some point, Julian was sure. It was critical now to find out where the second son was. Sulky Face had asked for help from the special unit… Then there was the Berkeley girlfriend… Julian wondered if the two still communicated after the boy left the U.S. two years ago. Well,it would probably worth the try. At the least Julian hoped to know more about this Gallen Wong…

And now… this seemingly peculiar business related to the Wong's wife and mistress... Had Barbara Yung cold-heartedly left her husband and her two young sons? Were the letters from Australia genuine? Anyone attended her funeral?

Julian saw yet another sleepless night!
