“Ah, busy as always, Jess.” Tara rolled her eyes “I still don’t know why I chose this lab. I should have listened to you, jie!”
“Well… I wish that too. Then we would have great time being colleagues.” Jessica chuckled. “Tara, let me introduce to you. My brother Ray, his boss at the police station Roger, and that poor guy who almost got a heart-attack over there, he’s Nick.”
“I know!” Tara smiled mischievously as she extended her hand. It was Nick’s badge. He snatched it grumpily as she refrained with great difficulty from laughing out loud. Tara turned and addressed the others “This way everyone, my lab is the last one on the left. Here, come in please. Jess, would you draw another chair? Okay, thank!”
It was cold inside the lab, but Nick didn’t feel it. He was still fuming! That Tara and her idea of making fun of him! Nick grunted. She didn’t know whom she was messing with.
They made a round, with Tara being very professional at the guide’s role. Raymond was asking several questions on various test methods. Roger determined to watch Raymond and his sudden interest in DNA testing of aged and damaged tissues. Nick spent a great deal of his time scrutinize the tour guide rather than the tour itself, and Jessica found that amusing.

Julian listened attentively to Raymond, then he walked around and sat down at the edge of his desk.
“Ray, you’re stepping on our feet!” Julian remarked, looking up to his collegue “Sir Lam and Sulky Face will not like this at all!”
“There’s not much time for worrying, Julian Dai Gor. I’ll find a way to deal with them later.” Raymond was brusque “I need your help now! Are you in or are you out?”
“Like I had a choice?” Julian sighed “It’s my tough luck to have a friend like you!”
“Come on, Julian!” Raymond laughed, then proceeded quickly “I’m not asking much. All I need is a phone call from you to Peng Chau, so that they will let me look at one of the cases!”
“Which case?” Julian got up and opened one of the steel file cabinets “I’ve made copies for all the cases within the time frame of May 1976 to Sep 1978.”
“Really? Good for you!” Raymond nodded in approval “But I don’t need the files, Julian, I read them all.”
“You did?” Julian frowned lightly “How?”
“Well, I still have my badge!” Raymond winked meaningfully “Lam Sir didn’t make me turn it in when he sent me on the so-called vacation. My luck, I guess.”
“God, I’m really nervous for you, Ray!” Julian shook his head “I can’t imagine what Lam Sir will do to you once he finds out! By the way, tell me why you are so interest in this affair of the Wongs?”
“My sisters, Julian Gor.” Raymond let out a long sighed as he proceeded to chew on the pencil “Or should I say my sisters? It’s my tough luck that both of them have been involved in the Wong’s infamous affair in one way or another!”
“I see!” Julian nodded, for a moment he felt as if he had lost something precious.
“Ah! I really don’t understand” Raymond spoke grumpily “What my two sisters see in those boys!”
“Ha ha, funny!” Julian snickered, “First of all. You shouldn’t let Wong Sir know that you refer to him as a boy. Second, have you ever heard this?”
“What?”
“Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder!” quotes Julian dreamily.
“Yeah yeah, whatever.” Raymond tapped the pencil on Julian’s head “Well, back to the case… It was this one… The time overlapped with that of the trip the mother and the mistress came back for family visiting… Early June 76. Here!”
“Hmm, it’s never solved I see! Female of course, 30-35 yrs of age,… facial wound inflicted after death? Hmmm, sounds promising.”
“I want to have a forensic scientist look at the body again, Jul” said Raymond decisively
“But they did the autopsy when they found the body, right?” asked Julian.
“No, they didn’t.” Raymond answered promptly “They categorized her as one of those run-away girls, you know, suicidal types.
“Ah, a 30-year-old run-away girl? What were those cops thinking? Okay, I’ll call Peng Chau, Ray.” Julian consulted his watch “Now get out of my office before Sulky Face comes back!”
“Thanks, buddy!” Raymond snapped his finger “Do it now! I’ll catch the 2:30 ferry!”
Leaving alone in his office, Julian leaned back on his chair and sighed. What he was doing now to help Raymond might as well cost both of them their CID badges. The foresight of having to do patrolling around the neighborhood made Julian shudder in disgust. Well, it was worth it. “Is it?” Julian smirked at himself “She has no idea you are doing this for her!”

The filming crew was taking the late lunch break. Hester didn’t feel like eating. It was getting a bit too hot in the tent. Maybe she would take a stroll down the deserted beach and caught some breeze.
Hester squinted her eyes. The sun shone so bright in the early afternoon. Hester sighed. The ocean and its endless blue waves were nice, but Hester guessed she was at home with the hills, the trees, the mountains, and the cool weather.
She closed her eyes dreamily. A small picturesque cottage… Greenery all around… A narrow path leading to a silver lake… Hillside with little tiny wildflowers, blooming on the velvety grass… She drooped down to pick up a little lavender Forget-me-Not on the side of the pathway. A shadow cast on the little flower hedge made her look up. There he was, in his blue jean and half-buttoned white dress shirt, smiling warmly at her.
“Gallen…”
He took the little flower on her hand and delicately tugged it on her long, silky hair. He whispered in her ears, his eyes twinkled with mischief. She blushed. He took her into his arms. She could feel the warmth from his chest… His breath was caressing her neck, tantalizing… “Love you!” he whispered in her ear. Blushing more, she wriggled her way out and sprinted down toward the lake, crossing the hillside of smooth green grass and tiny yellow buttercups. Her white dress fluttered around her, made her into a lovely butterfly.
“Hester” he called from far away “Hester!”
“Hester!” Someone shook her shoulder lightly. Hester opened her eyes… It was the director’s assistant “We’ll resume in 10 minutes, Hester.”
“Thank you! I’ll be ready!” Hester nodded and forced a smile. Waiting for the girl to turn away, Hester let out an unhappy sigh. She would have stayed forever in that dream, and never woke up!

“Good morning, Dr. Tong”
“Oh, did I wake you up?” Carmen quickly got to the bedside. She took out the thermometer and nodded approvingly “Look like your fever has subsided!”
“What time is it, Doctor?” Her patient stirred restlessly.
“A little after 2” Carmen answered, and quickly ordered “Don’t get up! Your wounds required bed rest.”
“Thank you so much!”
“Don’t mention that.” Carmen smiled warmly “I’ll go get something for you to eat. I’ll be right back!”
“I don’t feel like eating!” whined the patient.
“That’s doctor’s order!” Carmen said firmly over her shoulder, as she walked out.
“In that case, well, thanks!”

Raymond reached the Central Pier a little after 3 that afternoon. Impatiently, he checked his cell phone one more time. What was wrong with that Julian? He had still not put through the necessary phone call. Well, there was one place Raymond might as well visit while waiting for that turtle of a Julian.
“How is he?” Raymond greeted cheerfully.
“Getting much better!” Came the soft, clear answer, “How’s everything, Raymond?”
“Let’s go inside and sit down.” Raymond suggested, this girl had impressed him much! Never had he encountered a girl with such quick wit and cool analytical mind. Raymond liked the way she laid out the plan. It was risky, yet held a high chance of being successful.
“I want to talk a little more.” Said Raymond.
“So do I”

Felix tossed his blazer and tie carelessly on the low mount of rock and dirt. He fanned his shirt, which already soaked with sweat.
“Are you sure it said Tung Wan?” he asked his company, just for the sake of asking.
“Yes, Felix” The girl replied inaudibly. She’d grown more and more restless as the clock ticked by. Her hair had stuck to her temple, and her complexion resembled that of the ripped tomato. Yet she didn’t feel tired. Only worried. Deadly worried.
“Felix. You take a break, and I’ll just walk down there, okay?” She said in her small voice, but Felix could not mistake the determination. He shook his head and followed her.
“Maybe we should notify the police” Felix said as they were heading back to the starting point. Then he heard Vivian uttered painfully. Felix spun round hastily…
“What’s wrong, Vivian?” He caught her arm deftly in his. A strained ankle, obviously! Carefully, he led her to sit down…
“Oh” Vivian exclaimed as she attempted to get up “Your jacket, Felix”
“Vivian” he frowned as he pressed her gently down “It’s just a jacket! Now let me see your ankle.”
“Ouch” Vivian screamed. Tear began to pour down on her face.
“Done!” Felix said as he placed her foot down. Then he was panicked when he looked up to her face “Did I hurt you that much? I’m sorry, Vivian!”
Felix looked at the girl helplessly. What should he do now? Tough as he appeared, Felix was never good at handling girls, especially crying ones.
Just when Felix least expected, Vivian wrung her slender arms around his neck and buried her face in his shoulder, sobbing violently. Felix stood petrified.

“Your brother seems too busy for someone that’s on vacation” Tara remarked, “He didn’t even have time to lunch with us, Jess!”
“Ah, he just loved to be a busy-body!” Jess made a face
“Jess, I don’t mind telling you, but I think he’s hot on the track of something!” Tara winked, “He had set up another appointment with me for early tomorrow, jie!”
“Oh” Jessica frowned “Really? But I thought he’s not allowed to work on the case anymore!”
“Which case?” Tara asked eagerly.
“Roger’s brother, suspected for killing his father and someone else.” Jessica groaned, “Not a nice business at all, Tara!”
“Hmm…” Tara appeared thoughtful “That someone, is it a he or a she?”
“A guy, I think” Jessica stared at Tara “Don’t tell me you didn’t read about that on the newspapers.”
“Ah, you know, Jie!” Tara gestured nonchalantly “No time! I have to devoted all the spare time I have into…”
“Sleep, I know” Jessica cut in. “Seems like you’re too busy doing so!”
“What do you mean?” Tara detected some smoke
“Ah, it’s Saturday night and you’re here chatting with me. No unlucky guy?”
“Speak for yourself!” Tara retorted coolly as she reached for her popcorn and slumped back comfortably on the couch. “Boyfriends are none other than troublemakers!”
“Ah, sarcastic!”
“Well” Tara snatched the remote controller “Let’s see what’s on in a peaceful Saturday night without troublesome boyfriends”
A MALE BODY HAS BEEN DISCOVERED IN THE BACK OF A SHABBY AREA IN TONG WAN THIS AFTERNOON AROUND 7:00 PM, SHOT IN THE CHEST. LOCAL POLICE IN PENG CHAU HAS NOT COME TO ANY CONCLUSION AS YET ABOUT THE IDENTITY OF THE MAN. HOWEVER INTITIAL EVIDENCES HAVE LED TO THE BELIEF THAT THE BODY BELONGED TO THE SECOND SON OF WONG YAT WAH, WHO HAS BEEN MURDERED AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS WEEK. IT SEEMS TO BE A VERY HARD TIME FOR THE WONG FAMILY. HK CID WILL BE CALLED INTO THE INVESTIGATION. THE GROUP LEADER, LIEUTENANT EDDIE CHEUNG, HAS DECLINED TO GIVE US ANY STATEMENT. HOWEVER, OUR SOURCE SAID THAT A WARRANT FOR ARREST GALLEN WONG HAS BEEN ISSUED EARLIER. IT LOOKS LIKE THE SON HAD COMMITED SUICIDE IN ORDER TO ESCAPE THE LAW.
“Oh my God” Said Tara, stunned.
Jessica snatched the key and rushed out. Tara followed suit, mumbling under her breath “There gone my peaceful Saturday night!”

“Watch out!” Nick yelled and flattened himself against the wall. “You girls! What’s with the stormy entrance?”
“Where’s Roger?” Jessica rushed into the kitchen, panting “Have you heard?”
“He’s not back yet.” Nick shrugged and closed the door “Heard? Heard what?”
Tara fetched the control and switched on the TV. Nick stared at the screen, turning paler and paler.
“No!” Nick kicked the table “No! No! No! It can’t be!” He threw the flower vase down “NO!” This time it was a book, and his volume was at the highest “He can’t just be gone like that! NO!”
Jessica watched Nick in disbelief.
Tara crossed Nick’s path. Then swiftly, she delivered a tight slap across his face.

…Goodbye to you my trusted friend
we've known each other since we were nine or ten
together we've climbed hills and trees
learned of love and abc's
skinned our hearts and skinned our knees
goodbye my friend it's hard to die
when all the birds are singing in the sky
now that spring is in the air
pretty girls are everywhere
think of me and i'll be there
we had joy we had fun we had seasons in the sun
but the hills that we climbed were just seasons out of time…
