Hester smiled, closed her eyes, and plunged herself down. All Carmen had time to do was to catch the sleeve of the girl’s dress. The thin material couldn’t stand a chance. It torn. “Hester!”
Everything was happening in a flash, yet the image of the girl falling down froze in Carmen’s eyes. As in an agonizing slow-motion movie, Hester descended further and further… Her white dress fluttered wildly in the wind, resembling a butterfly’s wing before its death.
Screaming, shouting, yelling for ambulance… the horrid sounds and locomotion from the pavement where Hester just landed reached up to the floor where Carmen stayed in no time. She clutched the piece of soft silk in her hand, shut her eyes and trembled uncontrollably.
Then her senses came back to her. She must do something. If she could do something, then the girl may still be saved. Carmen snatched her kit and rushed down.
“Please, give way, please…”
“Dr. Tong” somebody recognized her “We can’t move the victim… Her head..”
“Get me some blankets, quick!” Carmen took control “We must keep her warm!”
“You must stay with us, Hester, you hear me?” She whispered to the lifeless body flattened on the hard brick foundation “You’re going to be fine! Trust me! Just don’t give up!”
The ambulance came in what seemed the longest 15 minutes in Carmen’s life.
“Dr. Tong, I wonder if you should stay by the victim if you don’t mind. But you don’t look well yourself…” the MET officer added in concern
Carmen raised a hand to stop him “I want to be with her. Let’s hurry up.”
“Hester, promise me you will try to stay!” Carmen whispered again, holding Hester’s cold hand. “Silly girl, do you know you’re breaking someone’s heart doing this?”
The ambulance sped toward the island’s central hospital, the crowd thinned to return the peace back to the small street. A few witnesses stayed behind to give statements to two local police officers.
“Yes, she’s new around here, I’ve never seen her before.” The stern cold receptionist said in dismay. She didn’t appreciate something like this to happen where she worked.
“She was looking up that lady doctor!” The owner of the convenient store across the street chimed in “And they’re both so beautiful.”
“If you asked me, I think those two ladies quarreled!” A round-faced girl said excitedly “There is a man who came here this morning. He might be the victim’s husband or something.”
“Oh yes, I think the lady doctor called him Raymond” the owner said, “I think he came here more than once.”
“Three times!” The receptionist added curtly.
“Excused me, officer!” A new person spoke “What’s happened here?”
“Somebody fell down and kill herself” the round-faced girl forestalled the policemen. Then she jumped and screamed at the top of her lung, as if she was seeing a ghost. “Please, I didn’t mean to say all those horrible things. Please…” she bawled in fear and tear.
The owner of the store blinked and rubbed his eyes.
Even the face of the cold stern receptionist twitched nervously
For it was the victim who had just asked the question. She stood under the cold moonlight, beautifully and ghastly.
“You!” One of the police officers stared “I don’t believe this!”
“What’s wrong?” the girl advanced a step, causing every one to back off. Then a horrible thought crossed her mind. She’d seen an ambulance speeding away when she turned into this area. Her eyes dilated in alarm “What happened to my sister?” She cried, “Tell me it’s not my sister!”
The policeman placed a hand over his chest and cursed himself under his breath. Of course she wasn’t a ghost. She was only a sister whose look was a splitting image of the victim's.

(HKU Forensic Lab)
Tara looked at Raymond curiously. He didn’t look worried or upset as she thought he would. In fact he looked quite excited. The urgency in his tone earlier, Tara realized, was that of eagerness. “Heartless, this guy is!” Tara thought to herself.
“So, what do you want to run?” Aloud she said
“These!” Raymond produced a series of plastic bags. “How long would it take?”
“Depend on how much information you want to get” Tara replied, scrutinizing the samples “they’re all badly damaged.”
“The case is almost 30 year-old, Tara. Are these still usable?” Raymond asked anxiously and handed her another bag “I took this also, just in case the others aren’t good.”
“Teeth?” Tara raised her browses lightly in approval “Great, they’re more durable. I think I can get some information for you from them. How early do you want the result?”
“ASAP, Tara.” Raymond said and held up a finger apologetically. “Sorry I have to take this call.”
Tara watched Raymond until he disappeared behind the heavy metal door of the laboratory. She didn’t think Raymond would take her into his confidence as of now. “Well” she picked up the bags of samples “let me see what story you could reveal!”

(Peng Chau Central Hospital - ER)
“What?” Carmen totally lost her head “A whole hospital and you don’t have any reserved blood left?”
“My regret, Dr. Tong.” The senior surgeon replied a matter-of-factly “We ran out of Type O since last Thursday. Do you know the victim well? Are there any relative?”
“They all are at least an hour away. They’re in HK” cried Carmen desperately “She couldn’t possibly wait that long.”
“Dr. Tong” a nurse approached her
“What?” Carmen snapped
“I’m sorry, but your patient from Quarter 3 insisted on having this passed to you!”
Carmen took the note and stared. “That’s impossible!”
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing wrong.” Carmen hushed “Hurry, let’s set up for blood fusion.”
“I thought we ran out of blood?” A fellow intern asked perplexedly
“From my patient!” Carmen explained shortly “Nurse! Please wheel Mr. Ken from private ward 5, quarter 3 please!”

(Peng Chau Central Hospital, Waiting Sec)
“Ray, why didn’t you pick up?” Jessica groaned in disappointment. She dropped her head back down between her extended hands. She’d reached the hospital half an hour ago when the ER light had already been turned on. It was still on. The waiting was dreadful, and both Raymond and Roger were out of phone touch. Jessica closed her eyes and prayed silently. As much as she knew her own sister, Jessica still couldn’t believe Hester wanted to kill herself. How silly Hester was. And Roger would be heart-broken. Jessica sighed and buried her head further into her hands.
It was another 30 minutes of burning wait before hasty footsteps disturbed the horrid silence. Jessica looked up to see her brother rushing toward her. With him were his buddy Julian and Roger. The miserable look on Roger’s face was unmistakable. The two horrible news had obviously hit him hard.
“How is Hester?” he asked hoarsely
“I don’t know!” Jessica bit her lips and felt the tingling on her eyes. She hadn’t been able to shed a tear since she learned about the bad news of Hester. But now she was at the very edge of one’s endurance. “I don’t know” She repeated.
“Jess!” Julian sat down next to her and pat his shoulder “Cry away, come on. It’s not good holding up.”
Jessica looked at Julian strangely, her lips quivered…
Then tears gave way.

(Wong's Residence)
“What are you thinking storming in here like this?” The woman seethed “Felix is home!” She turned and led the way “Come down here before you draw all the attention to us.”
“You killed him!” He shrieked madly the moment the basement’s door closed behind them “You killed him!” His eyes were bloodshot. He sprang forward and grabbed the woman’s neck.
“Get your hands off me!” The woman struggled “Get off me!” She gasped for air. Her hand fumbled wildly on the low storage shelf nearby. She got a hold of a bottle of wine and smacked it on his head. He winked in pain, and his grip loosened. She kicked wildly and escaped at last.
“It was an accident. He asked for it!” She coughed, panting heavily and holding the broken half of the bottle in front of her in defense.
“You cold blood!” He growled, tightening his fist until the knuckles whitened “You promised you wouldn’t kill him!”
“Don’t make a scene here Chan Yip. You know he had to be silenced!” The woman seethed “He knew too much.”
“You cold blood!” The man cursed through his clenched teeths
“What’s with you?” The woman cried “He’s not your son or anything!”
“Martha, he IS my son!” growled the man in agony. Blood and wine trickled down one side of his temple. His eyes were feverish.
The woman was taken a back, then she broke into a frenzy laughter,
“You must be joking, Chan Yip!”
