Eyes of the Beholder

(One year later)

(Hilton - Reception Hall - 5 p.m.)

Vivian shone as a diamond in her glamorous sequin dressing gown. Happiness twinkled in her eyes. Beside her, Felix was grinning ear to ear in his crisp black tux.

“Vivian,” Roger laughed as he pushed Gallen away “I wish you and Dai Gor a lifetime of happiness.”

“Roger, wait for your turn,” Gallen gave a teasing smacked on his brother’s head and got back in front of Vivian “I wish you a central nervous system made from stainless steel… So you could…” elbowing Roger away, he added with a straight face “so you could stand Dai Gor’s temperament!”

“Urg… Yee Gor! Vivian was no patient of you! You go ahead and put your artificial organs into somebody else. Go go go!”

“Hey, kids!” Felix pretended to scold “Stop the pushing game before you crashed into your Dai So and ruined her dress.”

“Oh my… Dai So? That sounds scary!” Roger stuck out his tongue. Gallen smiled amusingly. He was extremely happy for Felix. Gallen still remembered the first date he tried to set up for his brother. Well, to be frank, Gallen was quite nervous for Vivian at the time. He was afraid Felix would hurt her with his occasional fits of petulance. What happened had proven to Gallen the theory of Opposite Attraction. Nobody else would “handle” his ill-tempered brother better than this seemingly soft and vulnerable lady. They were made for each other.

“Picture time, everyone, quick!” Nick yelled from the other end of the hall “Where’s my fiancée?”

“Who are you looking for, Handsome?” asked Tara flirtatiously

“Er… My fiancée, have you seen her?”

“No, but if you wish, I would accompany you!”

Nick stepped back and eyes Tara keenly. She twirled around playfully. Her little black dress rendered her a child-woman look that was simply adorable. Nick blinked.

“Okay!” He nodded satisfactorily “I think you would pass as my partner this afternoon.”

“You!” Tara snatched his ear, and Nick yelped “That’s what you would do when I’m not around?”

“Let go of my ear, dear!” Nick groaned, “People are looking at us!”

“Jessica!” Julian was breathless, obviously from running from the parking lot “Sorry I’m late! Sulky Face worked me to death… Have we started yet?”

He put on his jacket and nudged the girl gently: “Are we going in?”

She gave him a quizzical look. He went on hastily when he spotted that “Sorry Jessica, I didn’t mean to be late. You’re not mad at me, aren’t you?”

“No, I’m not!” The girl replied coolly “But my Dai Jie might be mad at you when she finds out you still mistake me for her!”

“Oh no!” Julian covered his face “So sorry Hester. But why would you stay all by yourself? Where’s Wong Sir?”

“Well… Tara is around taking picture with her handsome Nick, so I’m stuck with the reception table for a while. You should find Roger inside.”

“Thanks!” Julian waved and hastily stepped inside “I hope your sister wears a different color!”

“Sorry Julian… Vivian wants us all in lavender!” Hester giggles, “But Dai Jie has a strapless on. Good luck!”

Julian walked in to see his friends gathered themselves around the long table outside the dressing room. Roger was the first to see him.

“Julian, you made it!”

“Okay everyone… In your position, please” Nick had done with his picture-taking mission, and was now taking up the place of an honorary MC. Felix had not been too convinced of putting Nick into the spot, but Gallen had vowed for his friend’s credential. Nick loved the spot light. In fact, he was enjoying it now. He also enjoyed the feeling of having ultimate power in running the night.

“Hey… hey Best man, where’s our Maid of Honor?” inquired Jessica, who was poking her head out from the dressing room

“I… I don’t know!” Gallen tapped his pocket “She isn’t in here!”

“I’m not kidding,” Jessica gave him a stare “Find her for me, and quick. Also tell Hester to come in here. We have only 15 minutes left.”

“Yes, ma’am!” saluted Gallen. He let himself out from the side door and started scanning the rose garden. Under the honey sun of the afternoon, he spotted the familiar figure in lavender.

“I knew I could find you here!” He came up to her and looked curiously at something she cupped in her palm “What was that, Sze Sze?”

“A BB rose!” She smiled brightly as she looked up to him “I found the whole bush, Gallen!”

“I didn’t know they have them here…” Gallen run his finger on the silky petal “I should have come here instead…”

“Yes, you should have!” Carmen straightened herself up with a bud in her hand. The gown hugged her figure beautifully. Its silky train floated around each of her graceful steps. He slowed his pace and stayed a little behind her…

In his eyes, she was a Goddess walking his Eden.

“What’s the matter, silly?” She had stopped and waited for him. He strode in his long, free steps and caught up to her in no time. Standing there in front of her, tall and exquisitely charming, he worked the magic in his eyes and swept her off her feet once again…

(9 p.m.)

“Has any of you seen Ray?” asked Hester as she came back to the bridal table, hand in hand with Roger. Her eyes shone in anticipation “I’d like to introduce him to a special guest…”

“Who’s that, Hester?” asked Vivian.

“Oh, Gallen knows him well, Vivian.” Hester chuckled, “Director Cheng, uncle Cheng…”

“Ah,” Vivian nodded “The director of the famous episode “The Death of Gallen Wong”, right?”

“The “Fake” Death!” corrected Hester smilingly “But we should not mention that word in your wedding, Vivian. So, has anyone seen Ray?”

“He might be sleuthing around to get some clues for his new case.” Replied Gallen with a wink

“What case?” asked Julian “Isn’t he on vacation? Flirting is what I see him doing at the moment” he nodded toward the dance floor, where Raymond could be seen grinning sheepishly among a group of attractive-looking girls.

“Don’t forget he worked out the case of my father during one of his vacations, Julian” Gallen pointed out.

“Well, he was kind of forced to be on that vacation,” chuckled Julian “Thanks to his two lovely sisters here”

“Speaking of that case” Jessica pinched Julian playfully on his arm before turning to Gallen “I still have one irksome question I meant to ask you long ago, Gallen. Who tore the pages in your mother’s diary? Those two missing pages must tell the mystery around your birth.”

Gallen blushed as he realized all the eyes had focused on him…

“Well… I guess it was me!” He cleared his throat embarrassingly “I was only 5 at the time. My father locked me up in the attic because I didn’t do my homework or something like that. I was just bored. Then I managed to jack one of the windows slightly open. It just happened to be a great place to launch paper airplanes.”

“I remember that!” Roger chimed in smilingly “You took me up there a few times! The attic window was very high up, and the airplanes took quite a while to land. It was great fun!”

Hester laughed “Luckily you ripped out only two pages! But why? You needed only two airplanes?”

“No,” Gallen was a shade redder, “I found a bigger book, with bigger and stronger leaves!”

“Thanks goodness!” Carmen chuckled amusingly “That’s how your Mom’s diary survived! But I do wish you didn’t end up on the attic that day and destroyed those two particular pages.”

“I know!” Gallen touched Carmen’s hand gingerly “There are so many things I regret doing, Sze Sze.”

“Uh huh?” murmured Carmen inquiringly.

He looked up, “But I’ve never regretted loving you!”
