Chapter 3

It spelled Murder

Raymond frowned at the medical report. He took out his note, scrutinized it for a while, then snatched the phone.

“Dr. Wang, please.”

“A moment, sir”

Raymond listened attentively for a few minutes, thanked the doctor, and hung up. Sir Wong was right. Someone really wanted the old man out of the way for some reason. Though almost approaching retirement age, old Mr. Wong’s health was astoundingly good. Blood pressure for the last check up was normal, nothing point to the risk of a heart attack. The family doctor would attest to that anytime.

Now it was Raymond’s job to find out who the murderer was and how large dose of heart-arrested chemical was administered without the victim’s notice. Must be someone the victim knew and trusted. Raymond took a deep breath. His first case of murder! He’d better do it right! Where should he start? Interrogation of course! Textbook procedure said what? First he would have to learn about the victim’s life. Raymond glanced at the list on his hands: 7 names. Raymond sighed. It would take the whole day or two if he wanted to do all the questioning himself. At any rates, Raymond would want to talk to the elderly housekeeper first. Report said she’d been living with the Wong since their second son was born. Then he would want to see what the old man’s secretary has to say.

Vivian was not a strong girl, but her fear for Gallen's life strengthened her. She watched in disbelief as Felix's body swayed and slid down. She too let lose of the vase from her shaking arms and slid down against the wall. The last thing Vivian heard was the sounds of key turned from the front door downstair. She smiled and fainted.

Roger stepped into the house. From there he could see the light casted from his eldest brother’s office. Roger hollered a hello, and was perplexed to find the house extremely quiet. Then he remembered it was Mrs. Yung’s night out. He flipped the light switch, and something at the top of the staircase arrested his eyes. Roger rushed up, his heart drummed.

There he found not one, but three bodies. Roger gulped and swiftly checked out the pulses…

The old lady sat timidly at the edge of her chair in the large kitchen of the Wong house. She held a crumple handkerchief in her hand and swept it across her swollen eyes after each sentence. Raymond was so worried she would work her eyes to blindness doing so, but he refrained from making the remark.

“Mrs. Yung, you said old Mr. Wong loved his second son the most?” Raymond interjected.

“Yes, of course. That’s why he was always hard on him. Dear Gallen is smart, but he doesn’t want to be a doctor or a businessman as his father wished.”

“What does he want to be?”

“He wants to act!”

Raymond nodded knowingly. The old mindset would not consider acting a career. Raymond remembered so vividly the fuss over his sister’s choice a few years back. So that’s the root of all the disagreement between the father and son it seemed.

“Do you remember what happened two days ago?” Raymond asked. “Did you prepare dinner? And who were there?”

“Only Mr. Wong and Felix” Mrs. Yung sniffed. Roger had to work late, and Gallen wasn’t home for dinner. But after dinner he brought home this beautiful lady.”

Raymond sat up: “Who was that?”

“I don’t remember her name. But she was very nice to me.” Then as if remembered something, Mrs. Yung stood and disappeared to the vast living room. Moments later she emerged and produced a copy of Vogues. On the cover a girl smiled brightly. Raymond’s jaw dropped. “This girl?”

“Yes, yes! Dear Gallen wanted to introduce her to Mr. Wong. But Mr. Wong was very curt. So Gallen and his friend stayed only for a little. Then Mr. Wong went to his office.”

“Why did he want to go back to the office that late?”

“He said to me he wanted to fetch some important paper.” Mrs. Yung sniffed and swept the dirty cloth over her eyes again. “Felix said he would go get it, but Mr. Wong insisted on doing it himself.”

Raymond nodded. The old man obviously wanted to talk to his second son in private. He probably called and ordered Gallen to go see him at the office. What happened there Raymond was curious to know.

The record said it generally took 3 to 4 hours for the drug to be in effect. Time of death was estimated to be between 8 and 12 pm. They can not narrow the range more than that. It meant the drug might be administered before dinner, during dinner, or even at the office. In other words, Mrs. Yung, Felix, Gallen, Mr.Wong’s secretary, and … Raymond winked unpleasantly at the thought… yes, his second sister was there on the fateful night!

For the girl on the magazine cover was none other than his sister Hester, the beautiful talented actress.
