Chapter 7

The Twin Effect II

Raymond refrained from asking more question while Jessica was driving. He still wanted to keep his life, at least until after he discovered the secret behind Mr. Wong’s death. They reached a small deserted Italian restaurant. Raymond waited impatiently for the waiter to walk away, while Jessica fidgeted with the menu card uncomfortably.

“Tell me Jess” Raymond demanded “What do you mean when you said Gallen is “supposed to” date Hester?”

“Well” Jessica drew circles with her finger “I have a promise to keep” She warned herself. Aloud she slowly said without looking up “I’ll tell you this much, Ray, that Gallen only knows Hester. He doesn’t know the existence of any Jessica!”

“How?” Raymond was stunned

“I just didn’t have a chance to tell him I wasn’t Hester” Jessica shrugged. “I came to the set one day to pick up Hester, but went to the wrong set and obviously she wasn’t there. Instead I met Gallen. He thought I was her.”

“Now sis, I don’t understand. You and Hester are really close. You must know about Hester and Roger?”

Jessica let out a sigh “Of course I know!”

“It beat me Gallen has not learned the same thing from his own brother!” Raymond remarked with a disbelief air

“N..no” Jessica hesitated “They don’t want anyone to know about them… You know, Hester, with all those reporters…” She paused, then added “Then I heard Mr. Wong wasn’t too keen on his sons dating actresses”

Raymond looked at his sister sternly “You heard, or you knew?”

Jessica didn’t reply.

“Jess!” Raymond placed his hand over Jessica’s “You do realize you will have to give your statement to the police, right? Might as well let me know what happened that Sunday night!”

“So you’re saying that if the drug was injected, then the effect would be immediate?” Raymond pressed the phone closer to his ear

“Yes Ray. As I told you before, it might as well be administered orally; in that case death would result 3 to 4 hours later”

“Well, thank you very much!” Raymond hung up. It meant the time frame for the murderer to approach the victim was now extended another 4 hours. It could happen anytime from 4 o’clock before dinner to around midnight of that fateful Sunday. Raymond tapped his head just as his eyes caught by the large wall clock. Oh no! Starting to fumble frantically through the pile of papers on his desk, Raymond cursed the ill-timed incoming phone call. Now he was almost 10 minutes late for the meeting with Sir Lam, and the later was a punctual freak.

Raymond finally found what he needed and rushed to his supervisor’s office.

“Vivian,” Gallen reminded the girl before he let himself into Roger’s car “remember to just rest well tonight, and tell Aunt Leung I say thanks.”

He flashed another smile at her as they drove away. Vivian grinned broadly back. She stood there on the pavement looking after the car until the she the red tail lights disappeared around the corner. Vivian took in a deep breath and looked up to the sky. She was sad and happy at the same time when Roger told them about the police’s suspicion of foul play. Old Mr. Wong had been so good to her and her mother, and Vivian couldn’t understand why someone had wanted to kill him. But she was happy to see Gallen’s remorse lost its ground. At least Felix had stopped blaming Gallen for Mr. Wong’s death. Felix, Vivian thought, resembled old Mr. Wong in so many ways.

“Excuse me!” Someone cut in Vivian trance, causing the later to startle. Vivian looked up…

“How’re your rips?” Roger asked, half-concerning, half-teasingly… “Dai gor has taught you carefully huh!”

“Hmm, just a little discoloring that’s all!” Gallen murmured in return “Sorry bro, just that I won’t be able to go swimming with you any time soon!”

“Well, take your time. Those bruises sure wouldn’t impress any girl. Anyway, I have someone to go with me now.” Roger’s face broke into a sheepish grin, which immediately captured Gallen’s attention

“What is that Roger? A new girl? Do I know her?”

“Not too quick!” Roger still grinned from ear to ear “You’ll see her sooner or later!”

“Hey, why not right now?” Gallen pushed

“Now? You have to go for your questioning, don’t you?” Roger chuckled, and both brothers leapt into silence. That one dreadful word, murder, carried such a horrible weight. It clouded their life and sank their spirits.

“Don’t worry, Gallen!” Roger spoke after a long pause “You know you’re not responsible for Daddy’s death. They will suspect you of course, but just tell them whatever you know and someone will find out the truth. We police are not too dumb!”

Gallen didn’t reply. He was occupied by something he had just recalled…

Roger pulled into the police station’s parking

As they stepped out the elevator’s door to the 3rd floor, Roger pointed at a room at the end of the long corridor and tapped his brother’s shoulder “You’re on your own now. See you in, what, two-hour time?”

“Okay, bye!”

Gallen glanced at his wrist watch. 1:45 pm. His appointment was not until 2. He reached for his cell phone just about the same time the little device vibrated. Gallen frowned at the incoming number, hesitated, but at a second thought pressed the talk button:

“Did I tell you to wait until I call?”

“Cut the crap! If we don’t get the sum by the end of the day, we’ll go to your brother!”
