Chapter 1

We Were Meant to Be

[Darling Harbour - Sydney - Australia]
[Flora]

I didn’t really know what happened, or how it happened, or why. All I heard was a flashing sound of something drop onto the water, following by a sharp intake of breath.

I turned, only to see his face turned red. He opened his mouth as if to confront me, but I was quicker. Well, I sort of had to.

“I’m terribly sorry! Oh my god! Is there… is there anything I could do? I could buy you a new phone!”

I was quite sure it was his phone I had knocked away from his hand just now. I was quite sure it was his fault that he had such a terrible grip of it. I only apologized because I was a nice girl, or at least trying to be. He should appreciate that kind intention from me. But he didn’t seem so.

He just stood there, staring at me. For a moment I thought he would jump forward and strangle me. I stepped back and darted my eyes around. God, where had all the policemen gone to? Police were only around when you didn’t really expecting them, like when I was speeding home from the airport yesterday. Hmmm… now when my life seemed to be threatened, they were no where to be found.

He still fixed his fierce glance on me. I suddenly felt mad

“Look, Mister! I said sorry! I even offered to buy you a new phone! Must you stare at me as if I’m a murderer? What have I done? I only accidentally knocked the phone out of your hand! And mind you, it’s partly your fault, okay? You couldn’t even keep a firm grip on it!”

He widened his eyes in bewilderment. His lower jaw dropped lightly and his torso leaned backward a tiny bit.

“Yeah, you!” I was very angry now. More than he had been! I didn’t realize I had advanced a few steps and now poking my accused finger at his chest. I didn’t know if I imagined it, but I saw a flicker in his eyes. Ha, he was frightened!

He had shut his mouth now and bit his lips confusedly. I was victorious. My chin was in the air. Actually, that conveniently helped me to have a better look at his face, for he was tall!

And his eyes were quite nice. They were looking down at me now. The glance was no longer fierce… Something in it made my fit of anger evaporated as if it had never been there. I looked around myself and hastily took a step back, smoothing my suit jacket down.

“I mean… I’m sorry!” I was softened, for a reason unknown to me. And I felt a little embarrassed for being softened all in a sudden. I felt silly!

He let out a grunt, turned, and walked away.

“Hey!” I frowned, “Hey!” He kept walking. Now I was really fuming. “I told you I’ll pay for it!” I ran past him and stopped him “Do you hear me?”

“Miss!” He spoke for the first time. Well, I didn’t really allow him any chance to speak until now. He sounded exasperated, but his voice was warm… “You can’t really pay for it!”

I was indignant! Who would he think he was? “Mister, it’s my fault and I’ll pay for it!” I looked back at him squarely, and couldn’t resist adding in a mocking tone “even if it means I’ll max my credit card!”

“You don’t get it!” He cried, waving his hands in a hopeless gesture. Brushing me aside, he started walking again. My hands were both on my hips. Such a terrible day! Consider myself unlucky to run into such an arrogant fellow. What did he meant? I couldn’t pay for his phone? What kind of phone would it be? Gold? With diamond buttons? Such an inconsiderate guy!

I decided to just forget about the unpleasant incident, when I saw him reached into his jacket and produced a tiny silver subject. I gasped in disbelief, pointing at it…

“Your phone!”

“Yes, Miss!” He stopped and answered in the same mocking tone I had used just now “You didn’t knock my phone off my hands. You knocked my camera into the water.”

“So what? I’ll pay for the camera!”

He heaved out a sign, turned and walked back to my spot. With his head tilted, he looked deep into my eyes. I felt a shudder.

“Miss, you can’t possibly give me back the photos!”

“I…” Well… Now I could understand why he was a bit more upset than needed be. But still, I couldn’t believe a man could make such a big deal out of some pictures! He should be a bit considerate. After all, I didn’t really mean to do so. It was just an accident.

“I don’t blame you!” he read my mind “Maybe it’s just fate!”

What fate got to do with me knocking his camera off his hands?

When I looked up to ask him that, he’d gone.
