Chapter 11

Take My Breath Away

Ada Choi

He was flawless!

He was perfect!

He was just the one I’d met in my dream!

The only problem was… I didn’t know whether he had feelings for me!

[HK - Wednesday - 4rd day - Grantham Hospital Main Cafeteria]
[Flora]

He wasn’t that flawless!” Ada wrinkled her nose “It’d been more than 5 years and he still can’t get over Eileen!”

“He’s so faithful!” I cooed dreamily “What’s wrong with that?”

“What’s wrong with that?” Ada gazed into my face disbelievingly “Are you asking me what is wrong with that?”

“I like him that way!” I claimed doggedly with my chin up in the air

“Oh please!” Ada rolled her eyes “Get back on Earth, Flora! The guy must move on! He can’t simply live with the past like that, it’s not healthy!”

“You’re right!” I sighed and reached for my Italian ice “But only he would help himself, I’m afraid!”

“There you are wrong!” Ada claimed and glided her chair closer to mine; her tone lowered to a nosy hush “Annie told me Gallen blushes like a silly school boy every time they mention your name in the house!”

“Yeah right!” I rolled my eyes to mask the merry wild beat inside my chest “Why would they want to mention my name in the first place?”

“Sorry girl! That you would have to ask him yourself! Go!” She nudged me and tilted her head toward the cafeteria’s entrance.

I thought I forgot to breathe for a couple of seconds. There he was entering, looking ever so smart in his dark gray suit. It was late into the end of the day, and he had freed himself from the tie. The unbuttoned collar of his white shirt protruded a little unevenly from under his jacket’s lapel, only to appear incredibly attractive in its own way.

He stopped midway to our table to greet some of his colleagues. His head tilted slightly as he listened to some comments, a lock of hair has left its place and dangled disobediently on his tall and stubborn forehead… It didn’t bother him, and it certainly didn’t bother me. He was seemingly preoccupied for a moment – to think about whatever problem his fellow doctors had asked, I guessed. His lips pressed slightly, causing the cleft on his chin to deepen…

… and me to drown in it!

“Hey silly!” Ada watched me keenly “You’re giving yourself away, you know!”

“What are you talking about ?!” I snapped out and hastily reached for the drink “What?”

“Nothing!” Ada was obviously amused “You’re drinking my soda!”

[HK – 4th day – Wed – Ada’s apartment]
[Flora]

“Hi Darling Harbour,” “Jerry” greeted

“Hi, another sleepless night, Jerry?” I asked, concerned. It was obviously a little early for that question. It was only 11 p.m.

“Well,” “Jerry” inserted a winked smiley. I could almost imagine the glint in Gallen’s eyes “I’m working tonight, so being sleepless turns out to be THE advantage!”

Gallen was on call tonight, obviously. Besides leading the volunteering group, he was still carrying on his duty at Grantham. Maybe this was the way he’d been these past years, since the day Eileen left him. Trying to find solace in working?

“You sure work hard!” I typed, trying to keep it casual

“Don’t we all?”

“Yes, but we don’t turn workaholics trying to stay away from normal life!” I blurted out

“Jerry” kept silent.

“I’m sorry, Jerry…”

“No,” “Jerry” resumed his typing after a minute or so, which to me felt like eternity “I guess you’re right, Darling. I should learn to let go!”

“Move on, Jerry!” I said encouragingly

“I’ll try!” “Jerry” said, and I could almost imagine Gallen’s jaw set into a resolute line. “Thank you, Darling Harbour!”

“You’re most welcome!”

“My bad!” “Jerry” exclaimed “I almost forgot to ask you how you are today!”

“I’m very happy!” I grinned as I typed “His secret turns out to be nothing closed to what I imagined!”

“Oh, so he told you?” “Jerry” was being a little nosy, but cute!

“Well, sort of!” I was being truthful, wasn’t I?

“I’m happy for you, Darling!”

I turned off the screen, and went to bed. I was eager for a good night sleep, so I could see the cute dimples on his chin once again.

[Hong Kong – Thursday – 5th day - Grantham Hospital – Pediatrics Cardiac Quarter]

“Kevin, you’re not 3 year-old anymore!” Ada scolded.

“You are the 3 year-old here!” Kevin winced in distaste as he looked at his strained elbow, now being wrapped in bandage “Look how ugly you wrap this thing!”

“Say one more and I’ll strain your other elbow, Kev!” Ada said menacingly

“I don’t want you!” Kevin was being a spoiled brat “I want Flora to help me! I can’t simply walk around with this bulky ugly thing!”

“Flora” Ada was exasperated “He’s all yours, I can’t take it anymore!”

“Hey, but I’m busy” Flora protested without taking her glance of the computer screen “Where are you heading to now, Ada?”

“Nick asked me to bring this file back to the lab!” Ada walked briskly toward the door “Good luck with little Kev!”

“Take him with you!” Flora pleaded “I have tons of work here, Ada!”

But Ada had disappeared behind the double door. Flora sighed as she sensed Kevin inched closer

“Give me a sec, Kevin!” She warned “I’m in the middle of something here!”

“That’s how you would treat a patient?” Kevin pouted “My elbow is hurting me!”

“Come on, Kevin!” Flora gave a quick glance sideway “It’s been properly dressed, you shouldn’t feel any discomfort now!”

“But I do!” Kevin wailed “Look how sloppy Ada worked this thing? She called this wound dressing? Gosh!”

“It’s fine, Kevin! Don’t be so vain! And who told you to rush down the stair like that?”

“You!” Kevin answered without hesitation “You told Ada you need the file at once!”

“Kevin!” Flora rolled her eyes “You could easily EMAIL it to me! Who asked you to rush down five flights of stair and stumbled down the last one?”

“But I only want to deliver it to you in person!” Kevin pouted “I only want to help!”

“But you’re not helping me here!” Flora cried silently. Aloud she swiveled on her desk chair and faced her troublesome classmate “Fine, give me the bandage!”

“That’s more like it!” Kevin grinned.

“Okay, done!” Flora checked her work and nodded satisfied “May I come back to my work now, Mr. Cheng?”

“How about a coffee?” Kevin offered “To say thank you! Plus you’ve been sitting there the whole morning, don’t you feel bored?”

“Don’t you have anything to do, Kevin?” Flora simply couldn’t wait to come back to her desk

“I’m done with all the assignments Nick asked for!” Kevin said smugly

“Well, I’m not done…” Flora set her hands back on the keyboard, but Kevin had caught her right arm with his un-injured hand

“Come on” he insisted “You have the whole day to finish that assignment!”

“You have a second to take that hand off me!” Flora grumbled as she placed her other hand on Kevin’s in an effort to remove it.

Then she felt the presence of somebody else in the room. Flora turned… Between the ajar doors Gallen stood frozen. He averted his eyes from the seemingly sweet arm-locking, hand-patting action as quick as he could…

…and forced a cheerful hello.
