Kevin walked down the corridor aimlessly. It was one of those rare days where this particular portion of Grantham hospital could take a brake from its usual pace. It was one of those hours when Kevin and his colleagues walked instead of ran from place to place.
Kevin stopped in front of the door to their common office and glanced at his wrist watch. It was still early for lunch. Kevin chuckled to himself. He must have gotten too used to the fast pace, that this particular morning almost grew uncomfortable.
Maybe he could ask Nick Gor for some extra assignments, just to fill the time. The problem was Kevin had not been able to locate his advisor, despite the readily-made availability of phone, cell phone, email, pager and all the similar communication gears.
Kevin chuckled once more and entered the office. None of the girls were there…
Just as Kevin was sitting down at his desk, the door to Gallen’s office flung open and a sulky Annie walked hastily out. She passed him without even recognized his presence. Kevin frowned, got up and followed her.
He stood behind her as she rumbled through the file cabinet, still oblivious of his presence. Kevin cleared his throat
“What the..” Annie jumped “Kevin, don’t do that!”
“What’s going on Annie?”
“Nothing, it’s just that troublesome brother of mine!” Annie said grumpily
“What did he do?” Kevin leaned on the tall steel cabinet, playing with one of the lose tags “Yelling at you?”
“And he’s never done so to me!” replied a pouting Annie "not before!"
“I say you’re just so spoiled!” Kevin nodded and immediately retracted from the sharp glance Annie threw him “I meant it’s normal to get yelled from your brother once in a while, isn’t it? No big deal!”
“Kevin!” Annie stared straight into his eyes “I should know whether it is a big deal, Mister! And I’m not spoiled, mind you!”
“Okay okay!” Kevin threw his hands up “Sorry then! But do tell me what happened!”
Annie took an exasperated breath “Not now Kevin! I have to get something for Dai Gor before he starts throwing his temper at me again!”
Kevin rested his head on his hand and watched Annie as she ran her fingers quickly through the files. She seemed to miss it the first few times…
“What are you looking for exactly, Annie?” Kevin asked
“Stop bothering me Kevin!” Annie snapped “I’m busy!”
“I’m trying to help here!” He sounded hurt. His tone must have softened her, for she dropped her hand to her side and stepped side way
“That’s better!” Kevin smiled “Which file?”
“Chan!” said Annie curtly
“That’s not helping!” Kevin chuckled “We have a whole cabinet of Chans!”
“Chan Wai San!”
“What?” Kevin was obviously taken aback “Flora’s? Our Flora?”
“I don’t know…” Annie straightened herself up “He only told me to get Chan Wai San’s file! You think it’s Flora Jie?”
“Well… Why don’t you check with him?” suggested Kevin as he fumbled back and fourth the content of the drawer “It doesn’t seem we have any Wai San in here… Must be our Flora then, Annie! But I don’t know why your brother needs Flora’s file!”
Annie appeared thoughtful as she walked briskly to another cabinet with a blue HOPE logo affixed to the front. “I found it Kevin!”
“Annie!” Gallen’s voice held a strange urgent tone “Have you got it?”
“Coming, boss!” Annie threw Kevin a glance “I hope this is what he asks for...”
“Well… but why?” Kevin asked, pretty much to himself.
Annie didn’t emerge from her brother’s office until almost half an hour later, looking red in the eyes. Kevin sprang up…
“What are you doing Kevin?” Annie caught his arm as soon as she realized what his intention was
“Let me go Annie!” Kevin said heatedly “I must tell your brother to do something better than bullying his own sister!”
“Stop it Kevin!” She pushed him back “He’s not bullying me…”
“Stop lying Annie!” Kevin caught her shoulder “You cried obviously! He yelled at you… oh my god, did he hit you Annie?”
“No, of course not!” Annie turned away
“This isn’t right! Your brother is too much!” Kevin turned and rushed toward Gallen’s office
“Kevin!” Annie hastened to hold him back “I’m okay!”
“No you’re not Annie” Kevin caught her shoulder again, forcing her to look at him “It must be serious for you to cry! Don’t worry Annie, I’ll just talk reason to your brother!”
“Would you stop being a busybody?” Annie seemed to lose her temper. She shook herself free of his grips and rushed out the door…
“What’s with the rush Annie?” Flora and Ada jumped sideway to prevent themselves from crashing onto the petite girl.
“Oh!” Ada pointed at Kevin “What did you do? Is Annie mad at you again?”
“What do you mean again?” Kevin pushed Ada’s finger away “Has she ever been mad at me?”
“What happened Kevin?” Flora crossed her arm “You must have done something to the girl. She looks upset!”
“I have no clue!” Kevin cried “And if anybody’s ever done anything to her, it’s not me!”
“Who else?” Ada tilted her head “Don’t tell me it’s her brother!”
“She said he yelled at her!” Kevin nodded
“Come on Kevin!” Ada rolled her eyes “If you want to make up story, please at least make them a little believable! If there’s ever some yelling between the Lo siblings, it’s most likely to be Annie yelling at Gallen!” She wagged a playful finger in front of Kevin “Not the other way around, Kev!”
“Guys!” Kevin threw his hands up and dropped himself onto his chair “Whatever! If you don’t believe me, ask Annie then!”
Ada and Flora stood with their arm crossed, watching Kevin.
“Stop doing that!” He clutched his head “I did nothing! There comes Gallen, let’s ask him!”
The girls turned to see their mentor approaching them. His face wore a queer expression. An attaché case was on his hand, and his jacket on the other.
“Hi Kevin. Ada, Flora, it’s good to see you two…” Gallen addressed them without even slacking his pace “Check your emails… I’ll be away for a few days, so report to Nick!”
“But Gallen…” Flora quickly joined him in walking out “We have a scheduled case this afternoon…”
“They will have Dr. Chu take care of all my cases while I'm gone, Flora!” He pushed the elevator button with his elbow “I told him you will be willing to assist him… there would be no problem I hope?”
“Of course not!" She assured him as she followed him into the elevator cart "So you’re not going to Nanjing with the rest of us?”
“Oh my…" Gallen exclaimed "That trip has totally slipped off my mind!” He flipped the phone “Nick? Count on you for the Nanjing trip too! If I’m back in time I’ll join you guys there… If not I’ll see all of you back here then!” He listened for a while “I’ll explain later… Bye buddy!”
“Where are you going, Gallen?” She asked with an unsettling feeling in her stomach “And why so sudden?”
He stooped to brush a kiss on her cheek “Be good, darling, I’ll be back before you know it!”
She wanted to hug him, but the cart had stopped and the door was about to open. She looked up to him, and was startled by the look in his eyes. He turned abruptly...
“Come back up Flora. I’m afraid Dr. Chu will call on you soon!” He said “See you in a few days!”
“Okay!” she stopped, looking at his back. There was something she couldn’t fathom in the way his voice sounded. “Have a safe trip then!”
He tightened his grip on the attaché case, and picked up his speed “Bye Flora!”
“Bye!” She whispered, looking after his retreating figure.
Why didn’t he even turn and wave at her?
Maybe she was just a little over sensitive. “He is rushing! It must be some urgent business and nothing else. Get over your girly paranoia, Flora!"
She nodded to herself, and stepped back into the elevator…
Flora suddenly found the cart was too big for her to travel alone… His cologne was still lingering in the air…
And that look in his eye… and that tone in his voice…
