“Flora! Hey, Flora!”
“Huh?” I jumped slightly. Standing in front of me with both hands on her hips, Ada squint her eyes
“What’s going on, girl?” She demanded “You are so absent-minded today!”
“Er… nothing!” I shook my head and reached for the pile of papers I was supposed to read. I’d been staring at them for hours, since dinner… But nothing seemed to register.
I couldn’t force my mind to focus… I couldn’t prevent it from wander…
I missed him! Why didn’t he call me? I glanced at the digital clock of the DVD player… 10 p.m.! It’d been almost 12 hours, and still I had not heard anything from him.
“He’s busy, Flora! He’s working!” My better self told me “He’ll sure call you when he manages!”
“But…” My weaker self clutched the tiny silver phone closer to her chest “I miss him! I want him to call me! Tell me why I feel so insecure at this moment!”
“Arg, cut it!" my better self chided "Grow up, please!”
“Flora, are you talking to yourself?” Ada bell-clear voice brought me back, and it must have brought some color to my face as well
“Look at you!” She chuckled and sat down by my side “He’s just been gone for half a day and you’re here losing your mind?”
“Ada, you don’t understand!” I pouted
“Of course I don’t… You haven’t really told me anything. Girl,” she grabbed my shoulder and forced me to look at her “don’t you think it’s time for a little girl talk?”
“I…” I hesitated, not that I didn’t want to talk, because I did! And badly!
“Come on!” Ada let go of my shoulders and settled herself comfortable against the huge piles of pillows “Come on, Flora…”
I fidgeted with my phone, and stated the transparent truth “I miss him!”
“It’s been only half a day!” Ada rolled her eyes
“He doesn’t call me, why?” I bit my lips in frustration. Frustrated to myself… Why couldn’t I be as strong as I always thought myself to be? Since when had I turned into this “crying princess”, as the way Gallen put it?
“Why don’t you call him then?”
“I don’t want to…”
“Do you know where’s he heading to?”
“Annie said Singapore…”
“It’s not that late in Singapore…” Ada tilted her head and attempted to grab my phone “want me to dial for you?”
I hit her hands “No!”
“Woa!” She exclaimed “What’s up with that? I only try to help here!”
“Ah!” I cried, and let myself fall onto the soft mattress “I don’t know Ada… Tell me what’s wrong with me, please!”
“Well…” Ada chuckled amusingly “You’ve turned yourselves into a silly lovey-dovey. One at the extreme, mind you!”
I sat up and stared at her threateningly… She held up her hands in defense “You’re asking me, so I’m just telling you what I think!”
“Ah!” I fell back down, but immediately bounced back up, for the phone by my side vibrated. My heart struck a cheerful chore.
Only to sink back heavily!
It wasn’t him.
“Ai da!” Ada did her favourite eye-rolling “I say you either call him, or just go to bed! We have to leave early tomorrow!”
“Go to bed at this hour?” I asked doubtfully
“Fine… stay up and think of your prince charming!” Ada slid down the pile of pillows and pulled the blanket up to her chin “Nightie!”
“Night!” I said
“Would you mind thinking of him in a dimmer light?” Ada asked “This is too bright for my eyes!”
“Cover your head then, extra!”
“I don’t want to suffocate myself!” She leered at me and reached for the bed lamp on my side. “Be a good girl and turn off that ceiling bulb, Flora!”
“Fine!” I got up unwillingly.
I switched of the ceiling light, and got back to the bedside. The bed lamp poured a puddle of candle-like light onto a small portion of the ivory carpet… I lifted my eyes. There on the wall and the ceiling, the lamp cast a soft sweet shadow…
I lowered my eyelids, and sat myself down the edge of the bed…

[Previous night]
“Flora,” his gaze seemed to penetrate into the deepest part of her soul, paralyze the last line of moral justification, and wipe out her last trace of hesitation…. She wanted to be his!
“Flora!” His lips, warm and tender, sent a pulse up her spine. She froze… and melt at the same time... “Flora!”
Forgone her ideas and principles! She loved him! She knew she would spend the rest of her life loving him. She wanted to be his!
“Gallen,” she whispered “I love you!”
“Copy and paste!” he whispered back, naughtily. He moved his head back ever so little, but enough for her to see the sparkles in those eyes. She touched his chin… His aftershave smelled wonderful…
“Flora,” he brought his hand to hold hers. His long elegant fingers traced up her arms, explorative and mischievously… The strange feelings swept her off and carried her away. She lowered her eyelids and let out a tiny sigh…
Flora remembered reaching up and wrapping her arms around his neck…
“… a little touch from you (*)
and a little hug from me
we showed the world love is strong
when two become one
so with a little smile from you
and a little kiss from me
we can go anywhere at anytime
and be what we wanna be
all fear is gone when two become one…”
She felt trust, she felt love… She trusted him…
“Our love is strong
when two become one..."
Were they doing the right thing? She didn't know... But she knew she trusted him…
"...there's nothing wrong
when two...”
And she knew she loved him!

[Flora]
I was being paranoid?
Was he … would he be… No, he wasn’t that kind of men! I trusted him not to be!
But why didn’t he call me?
Was he busy? Or had he just simply had enough of me?
...
“Be really careful!” Mother’s preaching voice wheezed round in my head “You’re a girl… Don’t ever let anyone take advantage of you!”
“Us?” I remembered my cousin, Steven, shrugged in his carefree way “What can I say? We love to conquer! If a girl is gullible enough, it’s her problem!”
“Don’t listen to him, Flora!” My oldest brother, Roger, interrupted laughingly “Not all of us are like that!”
“But don’t we tend to judge the girl once she .. you know?” My second brother, Sunny, chimed in.
“What do you know about relationship and all that, nerdie? You don't even date!” Roger retorted “I say it’s justified when physical attraction is backed up by real love... It's more of a personal choice, really!"
“Listen to him and you’re doomed!” My cousin Steven laughed heartily “Trust us, Biu Mui! Guys just conquer! We grow bored once we got everything we want!”
"Yeah!" Sunny chimed in again, nodding along...
...
Was Gallen growing bored of me?
I trusted him… but I didn’t trust myself in trusting him! What was I blabbing about? I was unwell!
Would Gallen look down at me? Was he judging me now? For what I’d done?
Dear pillow, pray tell me!!!
