[Hong Kong - Sunday]
[Flora]

“Slept well?” Ada removed her ear pieces and turned off the treadmill. She jumped to my side and eyed me meaningfully “Girl, since when have you gotten popular?”

“Huh?” I yawned and stretched my arms lazily “Meaning what?”

“This!” She threw a hand over my shoulder and stuck a card to my nose. I glanced over it and pushed it away…

“I don’t know who that is!” I claimed nonchalantly, suppressing another yawn.

“Are you serious?” Ada gasped

“Why such a dramatic reaction?” I glanced sideway at her. My curiosity began to tickle “Who is he anyway?” I took another look at the meaningless name card “The only thing I notice is that he has my last name…. Is he my relative of some sort? Nah, I don’t think so!”

“Flora! Moses Chan is the most powerful figure in HK real estate. Do you know how many of this kind of flats he owns?”

“Who knows” I yawned again “Who cares?”

“Well” Ada shrugged “I guess I don’t neither! But the point is, he sent his men up to look for you!”

“What?” I rubbed my eyes “Looked for me? At this early hour?”

Ada let out a short chuckle. I blinked, then glanced at the clock. My goodness, it was already 11!

“Why didn’t you wake me up earlier?” I groaned.

“He told me he would personally pick you up at 12” Ada announced cooly. She strolled pass me toward the bathroom… “Guess you won’t be free to lunch with Kevin and me today then, huh?”

“Who is he?” I knitted my brow “Did he say anything else?”

“Nope” Ada shook her elegant head “Oh yes, something about Kelly!”

“Oh!” I began to understand “Must be from Kelly’s family!”

“Who’s Kelly?”

“I’ll tell you when I come back, Ada” I’d just realize that I didn’t have much time to get ready. I rushed after Ada and squeezed myself into the gap between her and the bathroom door “Sorry, but you just gonna have to let me use it first!”

“Hey, I need it! Don’t you see I’m sweating like a... a...?” Ada stomped her feet “You little spoiled princess!”

“Can’t believe you didn’t wake me up earlier!” I shouted back from behind the closed door

“Hey!” Ada snorted “Have only yourself to blame, girl! Who told you to sleep soundly like a little piglet?”

11:59, Mr. Chan punctually knocked on our door. He was a grim, serious-looking man about his forties, with very little words. That struck me as odd. I always thought of real estate dealers as people who’d never ceased blabbing. Well, I wondered how this Mr. Chan really got to the place he was today.

“Thank you, Miss Chan!” He spoke again when we’re cruising along the highway. This was his second sentence. The first one had been spoken some 5 minutes ago, when he introduced himself.

“Please don’t mention that, Mr. Chan!” I mimicked his tone. “Anyone in my position would just do the same to help Kelly!”

“You saved my daughter’s life!” He nodded.

“I’m not the only one!” I said, and suddenly panicked. What if he was also invited? I thought I stammered a bit when I directed the next question to Kelly’s father “Is there.. er.. anyone else who joins us for lunch?”

“Yes, of course!”

I racked my brain for some excuse to get out of this thing. I didn’t want to see him again, not so soon! I wouldn’t know what to say to him. It seemed like all I was capable to do every time I ran into him was making a serious fool out of myself.

I attempted a few tries, but to no avail. Mr. Chan was adamant. “You promised, Miss Chan” was all he said. I grunted inward as the luxury Mercedes pulled over in front of a Hilton. Before I could realize what was happening, I was blinded with camera flashes coming from seemingly all possible angles. Well, maybe Ada was right! This Moses Chan was somebody!

“Miss Chan, would you care to tell us a few words? We understand you save Mr. Chan’s daughter…”

“Mr. Chan, will you sue the airline…”

“Miss…”

I was a little unprepared for the situation. Mr. Chan seemed to realize it soon enough to signal for his men to bring me in first, while he remained behind to deal with the reporter bees. I followed his men wearily up to the top level of the hotel. The little chaos in front of the lobby helped in distracting my mind a bit, but now as I walked between Chan’s men along the well-decorated corridor, my chief concern came back, making my heart beat a little faster. The men pushed the door, and I was ushered into a fancy private lunchroom.

To my relief, my bad-luck star Gallen Lo wasn’t there. It seemed the third person Mr. Chan had referred to was no one else than little Kelly. She broke free from the handgrip of a slender woman dressed in black, and rushed toward me, beaming brightly

“Flora Jie!” Kelly cried excitedly

“Hi Kelly!” I drew her into my arms. Her little hands wrapped around my neck, and she rested her head on my shoulder in such an adorable way.

“Flora Jie” Kelly said again “I was waiting for you at the hospital!”

Guilty as charge! I totally forgot about the promise I had told the flight attendant to tell Kelly. I grinned sheepishly at Kelly “How are you now? Feeling alright?”

Kelly nodded. Then she looked into my face and said solemnly “Thank you for saving my life!”

“Silly!” I pinched her little nose “The doctors saved your life, I was only helping!”

Kelly shook her head “No, Gallen Gor said you are the ONE!” She made an effort to stress the last word.

I felt an electric fire through my spine “Who?”

“Kelly dear” The woman spoke “Be a good girl and seat down first! We are about to have lunch!” She extended her hand “Maggie Cheung, I’m Mr. Chan's assistant. Just helping Moses to look after Kelly for a day or two, while he’s looking for a Nanny”

“Flora Chan!” I shook her hand “Nice to meet you!”

Kelly held my hand and led me to the chair next to her highchair. She was simply adorable. Maggie took the chair on Kelly’s other side.

“This is to again thank you, Miss Chan, for saving Kelly’s life!” Mr. Chan raised his glass.

I raised mine and took a little sip. “Well, Mr. Chan, Kelly is a great girl and she is blessed. If it wasn’t for the kit, then there wasn’t much I could do to help.”

“Yes, Dr. Lo told us so, too!” Maggie Cheung nodded. “Thanks to you!”

I was puzzled. The kit wasn’t mine. What had that Gallen Lo told the rest of the world? Why wasn’t he invited today? Part of me felt relieved for he wasn’t here, but another part of me wondered.

“Flora Jie!” Kelly tugged gently at my shoulder “I have something to show you”

“Not now, Kelly!” Her father said “We’re about to have lunch!”

Kelly’s face felt, but she didn’t make a scene. The little girl intrigued me very much! She was special in her way of acting and speaking. A little mature for her age!

Lunch was served and done with quite pleasantly. Mr. Chan was a bit less taciturn after a couple of red wines. He was careful when mentioning Kelly's mother in front of the little girl. But I gathered they'd some marrital problem. The couple didn't even stay on the same continent, let alone the same roof.

Moses Chan smiled when I drew Kelly’s ice cream closer and examined the content.

“I learned the lesson, Miss Chan” He said “I’ve notified the chief not to have anything harmful to Kelly’s health!” He nodded "Not today, not always!"

“Daddy!” Kelly spoke softly and politely “May I show it to Flora Jie now?”

“You may, Kelly” Mr. Chan smiled again.

“What is it, Kelly?” My curiosity was killing me as I got the small roll of paper from her tiny hand.

“Gallen Gor drew it for me last night, in the hospital!” Kelly said smugly

“Who?” I unrolled the paper, and felt another electric fire up my spine.

The sketch was done with blue crayon on just a piece of regular paper, yet it was so lively. So real!

And it startlingly resembled Flora Chan!

Why on Earth would he sketch a picture of me?

“Because I told him I missed you and wanted you to visit me!” Completely ignored her ice cream, little Kelly excitedly launched herself into an animated narration “And he said ‘Me too’, and then he asked me ‘Can I borrow your pencil, Kelly?’, and I said, I said….”

Why on Earth would he want to sketch a picture of me?
