“Flora!” He stared helplessly from the tiny pieces of paper flying like confetti around them, to the girl herself. She stood like an angel amid the scene, with her face very white and her eyes shone with determination.

“I don’t have to look for a perfect man in my life, Gallen!” She said, locking his gaze in place, imprisoning his soul “I already found you!”

She inched closer; her eyes never let his escape. He found himself tongue-tied and struggled to get away from the bittersweet sensation…. He found himself detesting what he was feeling, yet at the same time he realized how much he long for her to be by his side. He’d thought he would be strong. He’d thought he would be tough. He’d thought he would just simply let her go and time might heal the wound and emptiness of his heart. It wasn’t that easy if she wasn’t helping him. It was impossible if she wasn’t helping him!

“But Flora, look at me! I…” He managed to say that much before the next word captured by her warm soft lips.

He shuddered… Her lips parted his momentarily, before their sweetness touched the deepest part of his heart and soul.

Gallen surrendered…

“What do you think you’re doing?” a female voice whispered, quite angrily

“You shouldn’t see it!” the male voice answered with a giggle “It’s rated R! You’re still too young!”

More laughing… then a painful cry was uttered by the same man “Ouch, Annie … you bit me?”

“You deserved it!” Annie shifted her focus back to Gallen and Flora only to realize she had missed the whole scene. Annie gasped in dismay, and poor Kevin yelped again as the petite girl kicked him playfully in the leg. In her affectionate voice, Annie turned to her brother “Don’t stop, keep going!”

“Annie!” Ada laughed “Stop embarrassing them…”

“More than they did to themselves?” Nick cracked with a straight face, and even the victims of the remarks couldn’t refrain from smiling.

“It’s all your fault that I missed it!” Annie said with an accusing stare paid to Kevin

“Like you’ve never seen those two kiss!” Kevin rolled his eyes “If you people must know, I’ve had enough of this mellow business…”

“It’s not mellow!” Annie put her hands on her hips “It’s sentimental, it’s romantic, it’s …”

“Okay okay!” Kevin held up his hands “Whatever you said, ma’am!”

“What did you call me?”

“Ma’am…” Kevin retracted a few steps as Annie advanced threateningly; his laughing held a hint of nervousness.

“Hey, stop it there. kiddos!” Nick quickly stepped in for the rescue. “You guys should be happy for Gallen and Flora instead of bickering at one another like what you’re doing!”

“Why do we have to be happy for them?” Kevin sneered childishly

“How could you be so insensitive?” Annie stomped her feet angrily “They’ve just reconciled...”

“Look here,” Kevin was being hard-headed “If they didn’t fight, then they wouldn't have to reconcile… Am I right?”

“You!” Annie threw her hands up exasperatedly

“Okay, enough is enough!” Nick patted both Gallen and Kevin on the shoulder, then he walked into the center of the dance floor and made an elegant move “The night is still young people, what do you say?”

And didn’t wait for anyone to answer, he strolled quickly to the direction of the bar and within seconds, the room was flooded in festive lights. “Gallen, where’s the control to the sound system?”

Kevin’s eyes were rolling once again “You haven’t had enough huh Nick Gor? You’ve been dancing the whole night back there…”

“Like you didn’t?” Annie smirked

“How could I dance even if I wanted to?” Kevin retorted, turning to Annie “You weren’t even there!”

Gallen and Flora couldn’t help but laugh at the innocent remark. Kevin’s face turned red at once. “I’ll see how Nick Gor’s doing with the stereo!”

With that, Kevin hurried away. Annie turned to Flora “Kevin is acting so weird today!”

“I think he’s a little drunk Annie!” Flora smiled sweetly to the girl “And he probably drank a little more than usual because he missed you!”

“Like someone?” Annie glanced at his brother, who pretended to keep a straight face “You’ve been drinking tonight, too, haven’t you?” she smiled mischievously “And I know for sure you’ve been missing Flora Jie greatly!”

“Don’t try to be smart, sis!” Gallen gave his sister a playful hit on the head, to which she avoided with ease. “How about you go and see what those two are up to…” He inclined his head toward Nick and Kevin “Tell them not to wreck Dad’s sound system, sis, or we’ll all be dead!”

“Don’t have to drive me away!” Annie winked and signaled Ada to follow her. The later had been much quieter than her usual self. “Let’s go get some drink, Ada Jie!”

The two girls left gigling, and Gallen suddenly didn’t know what to say or do. He stole a quick look at her, then stared back at his hands, on his laps they suddenly become quite extra.

Flora gazed at his profile side way, and found it more adorable than ever. She reached out and touched his elegant fingers “Why don’t you play?”

“Huh?” He lifted his eyes

She smiled “I want you to tell me what you want to tell me…”

“I…” He appreciated her knowing him so well. She sat herself down the tool, waiting. He positioned his wheel chair next to her, his fingers traced along the coolness and smoothness of the keyboard, and his eyes when they looked at hers, still bore a trace of hesitation.

She titled her head inquiringly

He pressed his full, attractive lips slightly “I don’t know what I should say…” He played a few notes

She shook her head, it was a line from Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word

“No?” He arched his brow a little

“No…” she smiled with her nose wrinkled playfully “You don’t have to say sorry…”

He looked deeper into her eyes, trying to be certain of what she said. His fingers played another tune…

“Uh uh, no!” one again she gently shook her head

“Still no?” He frowned perplexedly…

“No, you don’t have to say thank you to me…” she rolled her eyes

“But I do…”

“You do what?” Kevin’s voice boomed, startled the man and sent the girl jumping on her feet.

“None of your business!” Nick pushed Kevin away “It’s a good idea, Gallen!”

“What’s a good idea?” Annie and Ada came back with a tray of exotic drinks “I found a book of mix drinks on the shelf, so I thought I might give it a try!” added Annie

“God bless those who touch Annie’s drinks!” said Kevin.

“This is actually for you!” Ada picked one and pressed it into Kevin’s hand “Don’t worry it’s from me, I made it!”

“And that’s better?” Kevin widened his eyes in horror

“Drink it or be in it!” Ada stared

“Okay! Okay!” Kevin chickened away

“Where’s mine, Ada?” Nick was certainly quick in moving into a convenient position next to Ada. She looked at him curiously

“I thought you were over there checking out the music?”

“I can’t figure out how to work it!” He shrugged with a comical face “But I think we have an alternative solution!” He nodded toward Gallen

“I’m not your pianist!” The later protested laughingly “What do you want me to play?” He pulled himself away from the piano and was about to roll to the other end where the control board was situated “I can’t believe a simple thing like a stereo system would give the genius Dr. Nick Cheung a hard time!”

“Shut up and play!” Nick growled “We haven’t deal with you about bailing out on the original party yet, buddy!”

“Nick, I can’t play your crazy clubbing music with just the piano!”

“Who said I want clubbing? Play ballroom!”

“WHAT?” Everyone exclaimed in shock.

“What?” Nick wrapped his hands around Ada’s waist, “I’m a fine specimen, mind you!”

“Right,” Gallen struggled not to laugh “since when have you started doing ballroom? And which style if I may ask?”

“Yes you may, dear friend!” Nick posed a 16-century flourish bow “I could do plenty of styles, lady and gentlemen! But for the purpose of tonight late show, just a Slow would be sufficient!”

The group broke into uncontrollable laughter. Nick ignored the teasing remarks and pushed Gallen’s chair back into place, facing the instrument “Play!”

“Right away, your Majesty!” the later saluted playfully. But when he played, he played with somebody else in mind. Words from his heart poured out in his fingers, floating on the key, blending in the ambience, and penetrated into hers.

“If I had to live my life without you near me (*)
The days would all be empty
The nights would seem so long
With you I see forever oh so clearly
I might have been in love before
But it never felt this strong"

Every single word voiced his very feeling, as if the song was made for just the two of them.

"Our dreams are young
And we both know they'll take us
Where we want to go
Hold me now
Touch me now
I don't want to live without you

Nothing's gonna change my love for you
You ought to know by now how much I love you
One thing you can be sure of
I'll never ask for more than your love"

Or maybe it was written for those who were truly in love. And as much as he wanted to deceive himself, Gallen loved Flora.

"Nothing's gonna change my love for you
You ought to know by now how much I love you
The world may change my whole life through
But nothing's gonna change my love for you…”

He looked up and found her watching him with her lovely head rested in her hand. The reflection of the stage trope light made twinkles in her eyes. Or maybe it was something else…

“If the road ahead is not so easy,
Our love will lead the way for us
Like a guiding star
I'll be there for you if you should need me”

She came around and sat down next to him, resting her head on his shoulder...

“You don't have to change a thing
I love you just the way you are
So come with me and share the view
I'll help you see forever too…”
