“Flora!” Nick caught her limped body in the knick of time. He took control of the situation quickly “Kevin, call the ambulances! Annie, Annie! Look, listen to me. You have to gather yourself together” He shook her roughly “We need you, Annie!”
“I…” she gasped for air and swallowed back her tear, trying to calm herself “I’ll be fine…” She tried hard to say between sobbing “What… what should I do? What should I do? My brother! My brother…”
“Annie, we need you!” Nick repeated firmly “Call Jessica and tell her we need the valves as quick as she could dispatch it. Do all she could!” He turned to the other girl, who had appeared almost sober “Ada, just stay there and don’t go anywhere. I’ll have someone takes care of you!”
“Nick,” she signaled at him “I could call Jessica, you take Annie with you, she could help!”
“Okay!”

[4 hours later – Grantham Hospital - ER]
“Nick, we got your Dr. Johnson!”
“Is he on?”
“He’s on, will be ready in 2 minutes!”
“He could see what I’ll be doing?”
“Yes, Dr. Cheung! The op is live! He’ll be able to give you all the suggestions needed.”
“Okay” Nick drew a deep breath and lost his jacket in a quick move “Let’s do it!”
“Are you sure you’re up to it, Nick Gor?” Kevin frowned “You do look very pale!”
“I am up to it, Kevin!” Nick patted Kevin’s shoulder “I’ve got some saline administered to myself. I’m completely sober!” He turned to another colleague “How’s the heart?”
“Stable! It’s on transit.”
“So that’s it!” Nick turned a little paler
“Nick Gor, are you sure you want to handle this case? I understand he’s your …”
“We don’t have time to talk about that now! We still have one life to fight for. Let’s give it all we could!”

[16 hours later - Grantham Hospital - Intensive Care]
“Flora”
“Flora”
She stirred and blinked. Slowly, each and every face which was endearing to her appeared. Ada, Kevin, Nick, Kelly, Moses, Maggie, Annie… Even her brother Sunny was there at the end of her hospital bed, for she realized at once where she was.
She searched each and every of those faces, trying desperately to find the one she long to see most… But he wasn’t there…
“Flora!” Ada held her hand and gave it an ever gentle squeeze “Flora, how do you feel?”
“I’m fine,” She smiled weakly “How’s he?”
“Who?”
“Gallen!”
“Flora, he’s… He’s still in critical care.”
She closed my eyes and let out a relief sigh. A smile curved sweetly on her lips… Then she winced slightly as she detected the first strange sensation in her left chest.
“What’s that?” Nick rushed over “What’s wrong, Flora?”
“Nothing,” she opened her eyes “I’m perfectly fine, when could I go and see him?”
“A couple of days, Flora!” Nick nodded, turning away to check the IV tube “A couple of days!”
She nodded. “Yee Gor, when did you arrive?”
“Just an hour ago, Sai Mui!”
“Oh, that’s quick!” Flora said, smiling
“Oh, yes, that’s quick!” Sunny hastened to agree. “Thanks to Nick though!” Sunny’d just realized that his sister was referring to the installation of the therapeutic valve into her heart.
She was only allowed to speak a few words to those visited her. When it was time for everyone to leave, little Kelly remained behind in the room, when she carefully placed a large square craft book, adorned by a pale blue ribbon, on the bed next to Flora
“Thank you so much, Kelly!” Flora’s face brightened “What is it that you have for me?”
“It wasn’t from me Flora Jie!” Kelly shook her head and spoke solemnly “He said to give it to you when he’s gone!”
“What?” She didn’t quite catch the word “Who are you talking about Kelly? Gallen Gor? He’s gone where? Annie!”
“Oh, he’s got transferred back to Queen Mary!” Annie stepped back into the room and spoke very fast without looking at Flora. “Kelly, is that your father calling you?”
“Kelly! Hurry and say goodbye! ” Maggie, also, had just come back and hastily ushered the little girl out of the room “Your father is waiting, and Flora Jie needs her rest, sweetie!”
Why was everyone seemed to be a little strange? Or maybe it was Flora herself who was still suffered from the effect of anesthetics from the operation. She nodded, convincing herself that it should be the case.
Yet that sensation in her chest, it was definitely something strange.
Something that might take her a while to get used to! But she didn’t mind, as long as it helped her to be healthy, so that she could be with him.
She was hoping everyone would tell her more about his conditions. She wished she had some wings now so she could just fly over to Queen Mary to tell him the great news. She would tell him that the operation had been successful. She would let him know that she was feeling splendidly, that his effort had finally paid off, and that she loved him.
Well, just a couple of days. She could wait.
She flipped the page of the craft book, and smiled sweetly at the cartoons. It was their little love story since the day she met him in Darling Harbour. It had everything from their little episode on the plane to HK with little Kelly, to those afternoons in the large garden of Queen Mary Hospital… It had their little game play in Cheung Chau, the first kiss at the French restaurant, the moment for themselves in his library…
She closed the book and clutched it closer to her heart, her healthy heart now she must say.
He was the sweetest thing that had happened to her life.

[Flora]
Gallen was the best thing that happened to my life.
Little did I know those days in the hospital that everyone was trying to shield me from the unbearable truth. Not until the day I got released from Grantham, and insisted on going to see Gallen, that they were forced to reveal what had really happened to him.
I tried with so much difficulty to fathom the fact that Gallen, the best thing that happened to my life, had been taken away by the cruelest of fate.
He’d gone. All he left me was his very own heart, beating inside my very own chest! His heart and not his artificial therapeutic valve he'd designed for me...
And just as all my friends, family and those who loved me were afraid; I had collapsed totally upon receiving the news. What kept me alive through those horrid days was - as crazy as it might sound - another lie. Ada was somehow successful in making me believe that I was carrying the very drop of Gallen’s blood.
It was the never-existed baby that actually kept me from letting go, helped me to get through that hardest state of my life.
Or maybe it was Gallen himself, the way he had lived his life, the way he had brought himself forward, the way he showed me what love really was about… All of those, deep down inside, had somehow helped me to overcome the tragedy and to be able to go on.
I’ve come to believe that Gallen was only meant to be a dream of my life. I had met him, had somehow managed to make my dream come true for some brief, precious moments. But a dream remained a dream! He had walked straight from a fairy tale into my life, swept my feet away with his charm, his kindness, his talent, only to disappear once again back into that far and away fantasy land.
There was, however, one thing that he had not been able to take away: my feeling for him! I couldn’t have him by my side, but nothing would keep me from loving Gallen to the day I died.
Nothing, even the cruelest of fate!
