Nic: Hey, beautiful!
Gill: Hey, ugly!
Nic: What did I do wrong now? I'm here to celebrate your birthday as promised!
Gill: What? In a hospital's cafeteria? I wouldn't call this a celebration!
Nic: I have work to do, dear!
Gill: All you care about is work! Since you've moved here, you've completely changed! It's like you're no longer my brother anymore!
Nic: Whoa! Cool down! Did you get out from the wrong side of the bed today?
Gill: *coldly* No
The truth is, Gillian stayed awake the entire night, thinking about the necklace and Edison. She was confused as she really didn't know what she should do now. On one hand, she has Vic to think of and on the other hand, Charlene who are both her best friends.
Nic: Cheer up! It's your birthday! Anyway, where's Vic? Aren't you guys going anywhere to celebrate this special night?
Gill: *sighs* Yeah, we're going for a dinner later
Nic: What's wrong? You don't sound like someone who's looking forward to the date!
Gill: Well...I....
Nic: Wait! Let me guess! You don't really like Vic but rather the one you like is his best friend?
Gill: *gasps* How did you...
Nic: I'm a psychic remember?
Gill: You're joking....
Nic: *laughs* I was just guessing. Don't tell me it's actually true!
Gill: Well....
Nic: I guessed it correctly didn't I? Didn't I?
Gill: *thinks to herself* Uuurgggh! Why can I hide anything from you?
Gill: Yes. Yes. I'm in love with his best friend who happens to be in love with my best friend!
Nic: Wow! Your love life is sure complicated!
Gill: *sadly* I don't know why I got involve in this mess anyway. I've tried so hard but I just couldn't control my feelings.
Nic: Have you ever told him?
Gill: *horrified* Of course not! He's my best friend's boyfried!
Nic: What about Vic?
Gill: I...I...don't know. I thought I could love him but it turns out that no matter what I do, there's just no place for him in my heart!
Nic: Then you shouldn't lead Vic on anymore...
Gill: I know. I know I'm selfish for taking advantage of his love for me. But I just couldn't hurt him. He loves me a lot. I know how hard it is to have a broken heart, I really don't want to put him through this.
Nic: But sis, what about yourself? You're always thinking of other people!
Gill: *smiles sadly* At least I know Vic sincerely loves me. That's enough.
Nic: Alright, maybe I said that wrongly. What about Vic? Don't you think it's unfair to him?
Gill: Aaarrgghhh! I don't know! I thought I could forget Ed but the harder I tried, the harder it is to forget him! And now...just when I thought I could, the necklace had to pop out.
Nic: What do you mean?
Gill: Ed gave me the exact necklace I gave him on that night of my party.
Nic: So? Isn't that just a coincidence?
Gill: No *tells him what the shopkeeper said to her*
Nic: That's scary! If it's fate, then maybe you should leave it to fate.
Gill: *sighs* Yeah, maybe miracles might happen.
Nic: Well, I can tell you one thing. Miracle don't happen if you just stand here and do nothing!
Gill: NIC! What can I do? One is my boyfriend and the other's my best friend!
Nic: You're focusing on the wrong thing, Gill. This isn't about Ed or your best friend anymore! You should really think about Vic. About how much he loves you. About how all this is so unfair to him. I really don't think you should lead him on, Gill. You'll both only suffer at the end
Gill: Maybe you're right....
Nic: Vic may be hurt now but if this relationship goes on, both of you will only end up being unhappy. Love is a sacred thing, Gill and you can't just play with it.
Gill: Since when you're so expert in love?
Nic: Because I've fallen in love before.
Gill: What? With who?
Nic: Not of your concern
Gill: Come on! I want to know who my sister in law is! Is she pretty? Where is she from? What...
Nic: Whoa! Relax, Ms Nancy Drew!
Gill: *laughs* Who is she?
Nic: *sudden sadness* She's the most beautiful girl I've ever seen.
Gill: *giggles* You talk as if she's dead!
Nic: *ignores her* I've got to get back to work. Please consider the things I've told you, okay? It's not fair to put Vic's feelings in the line if you can't love him.
Gill: But.....
Nic rushed out of the cafeteria, leaving Gillian in her own thoughts. As much as she wanted to know who Nic's girlfriend is, her mind pretty much drifted to Vic. Nic's words begin to sink in as she sat alone in the cafeteria.
*During dinner*
Vic: You seem awfully quiet tonight. What's on your mind?
Gill: *force a smile* Nothing
Gill: *thought to herself* You have to do this and get it over with. It's not fair to Vic.
Vic: Come on. You can tell me. Tonight is your night, you should be happy so let me take away all your troubles.
Gill: Vic, why do you have to be so nice to me?
Vic: *laughs* What are you talking about? You're my girlfriend! I'm being nice because I love you!
Gill: Can you...not love me?
Vic: What do you mean?
Gill: I mean...I don't deserve your love, Vic.
Vic: What's wrong, Gill?
Gill: Vic, we're not meant for each other.
Vic: *confused* What did I do wrong?
Gill: No, no. It's not you. It's me. I'm sorry, Vic. I try so hard to love you but I just couldn't. It's just not fair for us to continue this relationship any longer. I'm sorry.
Vic: Love takes time to develop. It's okay, I'll wait. Please, just don't leave me.
Gill: I thought too so. But I'm really sorry Vic. I just can't. It's not meant to be.
Vic: Please, Gill. Give it another try. I'll try to be a good boyfriend, I 'll really try. Don't leave me.
Gill: *sobs* I'm sorry but we can't go on, Vic because it'll only bring us more sadness and pain. You don't deserve this, Vic. You deserve someone much better than me.
Vic: But, Gill...
Gill: If you love me, then forget me. It's the best for the both of us. Thank you for loving me, Vic. I really appreciate it.
Gillian couldn't stop her tears from flowing as she got up from the table and ran away. Vic was too shocked as he watched Gillian disappeared from his view. He felt his heart being shredded into pieces. What had gone wrong? It all hit him like a hurricane, leaving him helpless and clueless. When Gillian ran away, he felt as if she had just taken a part of him with her.
Gillian knew she was being harsh to Vic but she didn't know what else she should do in order for him to forget her. But as Nic said, it's better for him to be hurt now then later on. Now, Gillian is left all alone to mend her broken heart. This would be her saddest birthday ever.
