Gillian sat down on the beach and let her tears stream down her cheeks. It’s been 4 years now but the pain still hasn’t healed and she doubt that it will ever heal. She sunk into a world of sadness when she lost him. Toro had taken away her dreams, her hopes and most importantly, her heart. She missed him so much that there were no words that could describe how she feels now. How she wish that she had appreciated him when he was there. But now…it was all too late. Unexpectedly, a Dachshund dog jumped onto her and started licking her.
Gill: *smiling through her tears* Hello, little fella. What brings you here?
Guy: Stop that! Come here!
The guy bent down and carries the dog in his arms, scolding it for misbehaving. Gillian quickly wipe away her tears. She couldn’t help but smile when she sees the dog. She simply loved dogs and in fact, she had gotten one at home. Her dog is her only companion that would listen to her without complaining.
Guy: *blushes* I’m really sorry. She can be a little too hyperactive at times.
Gill: *smiles* It’s okay. She’s so cute. What’s her name?
Guy: Oh, she’s Nymo. What’s yours?
Gill: Nemo? As in Finding Nemo?
Guy: *laughs* Yep, but you see she’s a girl so I’ve changed the spelling. It’s N-Y-M-O.
Gill: How sweet. Hello, Nymo *pats her*
Guy: Guess you’re the Chosen One then
Gill: Huh? What do you mean?
Guy: I asked Nymo to pick a girl for me and she chose you
Gill: Is that the best pickup line you have?
Guy: What? It’s true. I’m not trying to impress you! Right, Nymo?
Nymo: Woof! Woof!
Gill: *smiles*
Guy: So umm…what’s your name?
Gill: That’s for me to know and for you to find out. Gotta go! *walks away*
Guy: Well, I’m sure we’ll meet again! I’ve got to run with Nymo anyway. Bye, Gillian Chung!
Gillian was surprised and stopped dead in her tracks. How did the guy know her name? She turned around quickly but the guy was no longer there. She spotted him down the beach, running with Nymo but Gillian knew that she could not catch up to him. Who is he? She looked down and realized that she had her college’s nametag on her shirt. She had so much on her mind that she has completely forgotten to take it out. Today is her last day of college. In a week time, she’ll be starting work.
Gill: *laughs to herself* Silly me! And here I am, worrying how did that guy know my name!
On the other hand, they guy believed that it was fate that had brought them together again. He could still remember that it was love at first sight for him when he saw Gillian. He admired her from far and although he doesn’t really know her much, he knew just enough to fall for her. However, the circumstances back then didn’t allow him to be with her. Now, he didn’t want to let go of the chance of getting to know her because it is after all fate that had led him to Gillian today.
Guy: Good girl, Nymo! You’ve just chosen the girl of my dreams! She doesn’t seem to remember me, though. That’s a good sign isn’t? Maybe I’ll tell her when the time comes. For now, I’ll concentrate on becoming her friend.
Nymo: Woof Woof!
Guy: *smirks* What was I thinking? I’m talking to a dog! Uuurrggh! This Gillian girl must have messed up my mind completely!
Nymo: Woof Woof!
Guy: *laughs* Well, come on then! I’m sure dad will be delighted to see you!
After driving for hours, they finally reached the State Prison. Yep, today his dad will be released from the prison. Although he occasionally dropped by to see his dad, he still misses him a lot. He wished he could take his place and all the pain that he was suffering. He always believed in his dad and he knew that although he went against the law, he was only seeking revenge for his daughter. Thinking of his sister broke his heart into pieces. She was once such a lively girl but now, she doesn't talks anymore. The incident put her into a shock and she was deeply affected by it. It took everything away from her. Just then, he noticed a figure walking slowly by the side.
Guy: Dad!
Man: Edison? Is that you?
Ed: Yes! It’s me dad!
Man: And that’s Nymo?
Nymo: Woof! Woof!
Ed: *giggles* Yep, I’ve been telling you so much about her. Finally, I’m glad you get to meet her!
Mr Chen: Hello, sweetie! *pats Nymo*
Ed: Don’t spoil her too much!
Mr Chen: *laughs* So she’s the new princess in our house, eh?
Ed: Yep, I thought getting her would be a good idea…you know with so much things that have been going around… Mom could use some company too.
Mr Chen: *tearfully* I miss you so much
Ed: How are you?
Mr Chen: I’m okay. It was worth it, son. I killed him and never once did I regret it.
Ed: *smiles* I’m just glad that you’re back. Mom and Charlene would be glad to see you!
Mr Chen: *sadly* How’s Char doing?
Ed: She doesn’t talk much but well, she’s good. She’ll be delighted to see you again!
Mr Chen: I’m sorry for putting all of you through this dilemma. I didn’t know what had overcome me that day. I just felt so angry and all that went through my head was to make the scumbag pay.
Ed: It’s already in the past, dad. Don’t worry. You did it for Charlene. Everyone knew that, even the jurors. Not everyone gets only a 4-year imprisonment for murder, you know!
Mr Chen: You can joke almost about everything, huh? *mess up Ed’s hair*
Ed: I know, I know. I’m the family’s clown, right?
Mr Chen: *laughs* You’re insane!
Mrs Chen was waiting patiently for her husband’s arrival. She has been waiting for so long and finally, the time has come. These four years haven’t been easy on them. They all had to struggle to make ends meet especially for Charlene, who’s medical expenses were very high. Edison could not further his studies and worked hard to keep the family together. Things had only turned for the better recently when Edison was promoted to a managerial post. Still, Mrs Chen always felt guilty for destroying Edison’s future.
He could’ve become a doctor now if she hadn’t taken him away from the Yue family. She blamed herself for being selfish. She was the one who had left Edison to the Yues when he was young because she could not cope with having a baby. They were very poor then and could not afford to take care of him. It was only 4 years later, did they claim him back. They knew that it was unfair but no matter what, Edison is still their son. To see him calling other people Mom and Dad tore a hole through their heart. At first, Edison was upset but soon, he began to learn to love and adapt to them especially after Charlene’s birth. He simply adored his baby sister. However, they always allowed Edison to meet up with Yues and all through these years, they had never lost in touch. It is through the Yue family that Edison had gotten his job. At first, they wanted to give him a high post at once but Edison wanted to slowly work his way up from the bottom. He wanted to earn it himself.
Ed: Mom! Are you thinking about the past again?
Mrs Chen: You’re back? How come I didn’t hear you guys coming in?
Ed: That’s because you were lost in your own thoughts. I know what you were thinking, Mom. It’s about me, isn’t? I’ve been telling you a hundred times before but guess, I’ll need to repeat them again. It’s okay, mom! True that I may have led a better life with the Yues but what’s better than being in the arms of your own family, right?
Mrs Chen: *smiles* Guess I can never hide anything from you, huh? I love you, sweetheart.
Ed: *laughs* Me too but you should really save those mushy words for Dad.
Mr Chen: Honey, I’m back.
Mrs Chen: *sobs* I missed you so, so much!
They hugged and kissed each other, with tears flowing freely from their eyes. It’s been so long and finally, they’re back in each other’s arms again. Their love for each other had never fade and it could only grew stronger. Edison always hoped that he’d find someone to share that special feeling. However, all his love experiences have been bad. He is aware that true love rarely exists anymore in today’s world but he always believed that it’d happen to him one day.
Voice: D-A-D-D-Y
They turned to see Charlene in her wheel chair. She was struggling with her words and that brought tears to everyone’s eyes. It is indeed a miracle. All these years, Charlene had never uttered a single word.
Mrs Chen: *surprised* She talked! She talked!
Ed: Can you say that again? Please?
Char: D-A-D-D-Y
Mr Chen: *tearfully* Oh sweetheart, I’ve missed you so much!
Mr Chen hugged his daughter tightly and felt even more touched when she slowly wiped his tears away. He looked up at her to see her smiling. That smile that he had missed so much. He thought he would never have the chance to see it again.
Ed: Hey! Not fair! What about me?
Char: E-D-D-I-E
Ed: My little princess is back! *hugs her tightly* What about mom and Nymo?
Char: *smiles* M-O-M-M-Y, N-Y-M-O
Mrs Chen: *sobs* Thank God. Thank God.
Char: I-L-O-V-E Y-O-U
Relieved, they hugged each other and at that moment, nothing else could’ve been better. They were finally together as a family again. The house was soon filled with chattering and laughter again, just like the old times. Secretly, Edison prayed that this happiness would last forever. He did not want his family to go through so much pain again. They were going to start all over again. A new beginning.
