Ed: I guess you must’ve seen the news already…Can you believe it? The police told me that you gave the evidence….They must be joking aren’t they?
Gill: It’s the truth.
Ed: What do you mean?
Gill: *coldly* Yes, I was the one who gave the evidence. I set you up, Ed. Plain and simple.
Ed: *gasps* You…you…must be joking…What about us?
Gill: Us? How come I didn’t know that there was an ‘Us’? You think I would fall in love with my enemy? The one whose sister framed my boyfriend? The one whose father took away my only hope? Yes, I knew it all along. You took Toro away from me, how can I ever forgive you?
Edison was taken aback. So all this while, Gillian knew the truth. She was only using him to get her revenge. Vic was right all along but Edison was too blinded to realize the truth. It was all just an act. How could she do this to him? Edison had loved her so much that he would have given up his soul for her. Still, his love for her was not strong enough to conquer her hatred. At that moment, he could feel nothing but disappointment in her. He thought she loved him but all this while, she was merely an angel in disguise.
Gillian looked at Edison, expecting him to scream at her but instead he just look back at her, his face full of hurt and disappointment. She thought that she would be happy because she had broken Edison’s heart before he could break hers. She thought that she would be satisfied to see Edison’s own plans blow up in his face. Still, she felt none of that. Instead, she knew that she would’ve felt better if Edison were to scream at her instead of looking at her with disgust. Edison’s reaction came as a shock to her and she began to doubt the truth from Ruby and Shawn. Could this guy standing in front of her really did not love her at all? Did she mean nothing to him? Before any of them could say another word, Charlene stepped in between them.
Char: *cries* How could you do this? My brother loved you more than life itself! How could you treat him as if he’s some toy? How could you betray him? I was wrong about you, Gillian Chung. I was so wrong! I thought you’ve changed but I guess not. Now, my brother has to pay for it.
Ed: *gasps* You knew it all along?
Char: I didn’t recognize her at first but I did later on. You’re stupid, Ed. For not telling me her true identity. You think I would be so selfish as to break you guys off? But now, now, that I see the true colours of Gillian Chung, I regretted not breaking you guys apart right from the very start!
Ed: Come on. Let’s go….
Char: *angrily* No! Not until I’m finish with her! My brother gave you a chance even when he knew exactly who you are...How could you...
Gill: I’m not going to listen to anymore of your rubbish!
Ed: Char…
Char: *sobs* I don’t care if you blamed me for Toro’s death! I don’t even care if you wish I was dead but why Eddie? What did he do to you? He has done nothing but love you with all his heart! He doesn’t deserve to go through all these just because of our stupid misunderstanding! What did Toro do to you? Put a spell on you to blind you with all his lies?
Gill: *yells* Don’t you ever talk about Toro like that! You deserved what happened to you, Char! You asked for it! You knew I was his girlfriend and yet, you wouldn’t let him go! If you were raped that night, it was only because you asked for it!
At that very moment, Edison slapped her across the cheek, his breath getting heavier and heavier. He was hurt, so hurt that he could no longer control himself. How could Gillian changed so drastically in such a short period? He thought he knew her well but realized that he actually knew nothing about her in reality. All this while, Charlene has been scolding Gillian for being so blind but comparing to Gillian, he was of no difference. He, himself was so blinded by his love for Gillian that he could not see her for who she really is.
Gill: How dare….
Ed: *cuts in * Don’t you dare talk about my sister like that!
Char: You want to know the truth?
Gill: No! I have had enough! *turns away*
Char: *grabs her back* No! I’m not letting you walk away from the truth again! You listen to me! I was never interested in your boyfriend, Gillian! Why would I? I already have my own! You think I’m some kind of slut?
Gill: That’s exactly what you are! A slut!
Char: *ignores her* It was Toro who made a move on me! I ignored him but he kept on trying by calling me and leaving me yucky messages. This kept going on until, one day he had enough of it. *sobs* I was walking back from school and…and..and…*cries*
Ed: *softly* You don’t have to talk about it, Char. Please, don’t torment yourself….*looks at Gill angrily*
Char: * pats Ed’s hands assuringly* I was then grabbed by him and taken to an abandon house. That’s where he.. raped… me and took pictures of me, threatening to publicize it. He was going to ruin and humiliate me and you want to know why? It was all because he thought I was playing hard to get with him! *cries* Now, your angel boy isn’t really an angel anymore, is he?
Gill: You’re lying….
Char: Don’t deny it, Gill! I know you know the truth! It’s just that you refused to believe that it was the truth! *sobs* If anyone here should be angry, it should’ve been me! I suffered the most! I was the one who was humiliated! I was the one whose father was in jail! I was the one who lost my whole future! I was the one who lost Vic! What have you lost, Gill? Nothing but an angel in disguise! And today, you’ve lost the boy who gave you his heart, Gillian Chung. You remember that for the rest of your life.
Ed: *hugs her* Oh, Charlene…..
Char: I’ve said what I have to say. Let’s go. Goodbye.
With that, Edison and Charlene walked away, leaving Gillian speechless. The truth was awful, and that was the reason why she had kept running away. She collapsed on the floor, her tears streaming down uncontrollably. All her dreams and hopes were shattered and reduced to nothing. With Toro’s death, she had so badly wanted to believe that he was the innocent party but now Charlene had proved her wrong. She saw the sadness and the pain in Charlene’s eyes and knew that she wasn’t lying. The eyes never lie. How could Toro, the guy whom she had loved so much took away the life of an innocent girl like Charlene? She was wrong, she was wrong all the while. All her hatred and anger should’ve been directed at Toro and not at the Chens. Mr Chen did what a father would’ve done and Edison….he did what a brother should’ve done. Thinking of Edison made her cry even harder. What if what Charlene said was the truth about Edison? What if he did really love her with all his heart? Isn’t then she the one who has let their happiness slipped out of her hands?
Gill: *sobs* I’m so sorry, Ed. I really, really am. I was so hurt when I found out that you didn’t love me but still, that doesn’t make up for what I’ve done to you. I’m so sorry. I don’t blame you either….it was all because of me. I was stupid, so stupid that I didn’t realized how lucky I was to have you. I blew it. It was all because of me. I’m so sorry, Ed.
Voice: Why are you crying here? Ed can’t hear you. You should go to him, Gill. Go.
Gill: *looks up* Ruby?
Ruby was feeling on top of the world when she saw the news on television. This time, she knew that she had her victory. Shawn called her and they talked happily about their success. Not only will that split Edison and Gillian apart but that will also destroy the chances of them ever getting back again. Pretending to be the concerned friend, Ruby decided to go to Gillian’s house. However, she was shocked when she saw Edison and Charlene quarrelling with Gillian. She hid behind the wall and listened to everything. Her heart went out to Charlene as she poured out her heart and suddenly, Ruby felt bad for all that she had done. Her sufferings were nothing compared to Charlene’s. Her heart broke even more when she saw Gillian collapsed on the floor, drowning in her own guilt In her anger, Ruby had forgotten the fact that Gillian is her best friend. The one who had stood by her through thick and thin. Seeing her best friend in such a helpless situation, made Ruby changed her mind. She knew she had to set things right again and the only thing that she could do was to confess.
Ruby: *sits down beside her* You’ve got to tell him how you really feel, Gill. Don’t let him slip away just like that.
Gill: *whispers* But he doesn’t love me. He never did.
Ruby: He loves you, Gill. He really does. You mean the world to him.
Gill: What do you mean? You told me that he was only using me to take his revenge against Toro….You told me that he was only pretending….What are you talking about?
Ruby: *looks down* It was a set-up, Gillian. Shawn and I got together and came up with a plan to separate the two of you so…so…that we could switch partners. I’m so sorry for being so selfish but at that time, I wasn’t thinking properly. I’m sorry.
Gill: *gasps* A set-up? Do you mean that what you’ve told me were all lies? But…but…I don’t understand…How could you…..
Ruby: We wanted you to hate each other so much so that there will never be a chance for you two to get back again. We couldn’t take the chance…..A simple break-up might not change anything if you guys still have feelings for each other…That’s why we….
Gill: *sobs* How could you be so mean? How could you? My best friend?
Ruby: I love Edison and I blamed you for snatching him away from me. I don’t blame you if you hate me forever, Gill. But please, don’t give up on Ed. He needs you. I ‘m sorry it took me so long to realize this. I’m sorry.
Gill: *yells* How could you? How could you? You were my best friend!
Gillian’s world turned darker and darker as she tried to digest the truth. She could not believe that everything she had trusted turned out to nothing but lies. She thought she was safe but in reality her life was built around lies and betrayals. Her heart sank as she realizes that she had given up the one and only thing that was the truth….Edison’s love. How could she let her own insecurities ruin their relationship? Why didn’t she trust him enough? She could never forget the disappointment and the hurt in Edison’s face….would he ever forgive her now? How could she face him after all the hurt that she had caused him? Frustrated, Gillian stormed off into the dark, letting her tears flow freely.
Ruby wiped her tears away as she watched Gillian disappear around the corner. She knew that she had cross over the line and now, she has to pay for it with her friendship. Not only has she lost Edison but she had also lost her best friend that night. Somehow, losing Edison didn’t seem to hurt as much as she thought. Perhaps, she had never really loved him. Perhaps she was only the object of her competitiveness with Gillian. She looked up to the stars and prayed that Edison will forgive Gillian. Her prayers were interrupted when her cell phone rang and she immediately knew that it is Shawn.
Ruby: Hello Shawn.
Shawn: How did it go?
Ruby: It’s all over, Shawn.
Shawn: You mean between Ed and Gill! Yes! Finally! I’ve killed two birds with one stone, Rubs! My father fired him on the spot and is now cursing him! I’ve got Gill now and it’s the end for Ed!
Ruby: Gill already knows the truth, Shawn. About everything.
Shawn: What do you mean?
Ruby: I can’t go through any more of these lies, Shawn. I’m sorry. I can no longer betray my best friend. You shouldn’t either because Gill loves Edison and nothing neither you nor I can do to change that fact.
Shawn: What are you blabbering about? It was you who agreed to this! You love Ed, don’t you?
Ruby: I don’t know….
Shawn: What do you mean you don’t know? We had it all going on so well! Why did you have to go and blow it all up?
Ruby: *sobs* She’s my best friend, Shawn. But of course, someone like you wouldn’t know what is a best friend because you never had one! All you think it about yourself!
Shawn: Don’t forget, you were involved in this as much as I am. You have no right to insult me like this because you did the exact same thing! We’re of the same kind, Ruby! We only care about ourselves!
Ruby: *cries* Don’t you dare say that! We are not of the same kind! You want to know why? Because now, I know what I’ve done was wrong but you…you….Shawn, please listen to me. I’m sorry that I agreed to help you and even encouraged you…I was wrong…I was so wrong. What we did was simply horrible! We’ve put Ed is a deep trouble and we’ve not only hurt Gill but everyone around us too!
Shawn: Ed deserved it.
Ruby: No, he doesn’t! Right from the start, he had done nothing wrong! All he did was to love your family as his own and help build up this company! Imagine how heartbroken your parents are now, Shawn…..To know that Ed had betrayed them. What about Ed’s own parents? They too must’ve been worried sick about him! This time, we went too far. You and I both know it.
Shawn: We…
Ruby: I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have got together with you in the first place. I was so blind as to even allow you to put Ed in grave danger with the law enforcements..If you won't do anything about it, I'll make sure Ed's name will be cleared. I'll do all I can. Meeting you ruined my entire life. I regretted knowing you, Shawn Yue.
With that, the line went dead leaving Shawn in shock. The conversation with Ruby played over and over again in his head. As much as he hated to admit it, Ruby was right. He had let his hatred take control over him and as a result,he had land Edison in serious trouble this time. Now, he had not only hurt Edison but everyone around him too. However, his heart hurt even more with Ruby’s last words, that he had ruined her life. He couldn’t understand why but knowing that Ruby hated him simply tore him apart. Again, the question pops up in his mind. Is he in love with Ruby? If he’s not in love with her, why then is he hurting so much? In frustration, he took out a bottle of whisky, hoping to drown all his sorrows and guilt.
