Life could not have been better for Edison after his father’s return. Charlene’s condition is slowly improving and she is now able to talk one whole sentence without stammering. Charlene is also going through physiotherapy at the hospital and she’s doing so well that she no longer needs the wheelchair anymore. No one could really explain her sudden change but guessed that it might have because of Mr Chen. There’s just some special connection between the father and the daughter.
Char: Eddie, where are you going?
Ed: *smiles* I’m going to work
Char: Can I go?
Ed: Of course not, dear!
Char: *sadly* But it’s so boring here! Mom wouldn’t let me do anything!
Ed: That’s because she loves you. Look, I’ll talk to her okay? What is it that you want to do?
Char: *cheers up* I know Mom will listen to you. I want to go out of this house. You know, to go shopping or something.
Ed: Are you sure?
Char: Yep, it’s been too long. I want to see how much the world has changed.
Ed: But…ummm….
Char: You’re afraid that it’ll bring back bad memories?
Ed: *nods* You just got well. I don’t want anything to happen to you again!
Char: I promise that I won’t let anything happen to me. Please Eddie, don’t give me a house arrest warrant for nothing!
Ed: *sighs* Okay fine. I’ll ask Mom to bring you to the mall or something. Just promise me you’ll stay safe okay? If anything bothered you, please tell Mom okay?
Char: Promise. Thanks! *hugs him*
Ed: If you see anything, just…
Char: *cuts in* Don’t worry I’ll be okay!
Ed: Well, you take care then. I’ll talk to Mom before I go off for work.
At first Mrs Chen objected to the idea because she didn’t want the past to repeat itself again. Few years back, she had taken Charlene to the park and Edison had took some pictures of them together. However, Charlene suddenly turned pale and started screaming before fainting. Something about the camera had reminded her of her past. Mrs Chen just didn’t want to go through that ordeal again especially now that Charlene is doing so well. Finally after much persuasion, she had no choice but to give in. It is true that Charlene need to be expose to the world outside. To confine her to only the house and the hospital doesn’t sound fair. Edison gave her a quick peck on the cheeks before heading to work.
*At work*
Shawn: *smirks* Oh little bro, you finally found your way back to the office?
Ed: I’ve told that I have some family problems…
Shawn: Oh yeah, your Dad is finally released from the prison right? So, how does it feels like to have an ex prisoner for a dad?
Ed: It’s none of your business.
Shawn: *laughs* Watch you attitude, Edison. You don’t want to lose your job
Ed: Shut up
Shawn: You think you’re so good? Don’t forget that you’re still dependant on us! Without us, where will you be?
Ed: *ignores him and walks away*
Shawn: *pulls him back* Don’t you dare walk away when I’m talking to you, Mr.
Ed: What is it that you want?
Shawn: I don’t know. Probably your little sister?
Ed: Don’t you dare…
Shawn: Don’t I dare what?
Ed: *clenches his fist* Don’t you dare talk about my sister
Shawn: *smirks* Who wants her anyway? She’s nothing but a vegetable now. Plus, she’s no longer “clean”
Unable to control his anger anymore, Edison hit Shawn squarely on his face. They broke out into a fight and the other office staffs have to break them apart. They were all used to the fighting because nothing good can come out when Edison and Shawn meet up. Shawn had always been jealous about Edison. The fact that Edison is always better than him in everything and especially the fact that his parents seem to love Edison more. The two of them just couldn’t get along well and Shawn always finds the opportunity to get back at Edison.
Shawn: You watch out, little brother *wiping the blood from his mouth*
Gillian was nervous as she checked her appearance in the mirror over and over again. Today is her first day at work and she didn’t want anything to go wrong. She knew that the first impression is always important because most people tend to remember it. She was shocked however, when she entered the office and saw two people fighting in front of her. She thought one of them looked really familiar and soon realized that it was that boy at beach. Seeing him in anger and hitting the other guy repeatedly, whom she recognized as the Director’s son, just scares her. Gillian made a mental note to stay clear from him.
Lady: Miss? May I help you?
Gill: Oh, sorry. I’m Gillian Chung. This is my first day at work
Lady: *coldly* You’re Mr Chen’s new secretary?
Gill: Err…Yes.
Lady: I’m Bobo. Come, I’ll show you his room
Gill: Thank you
Gillian followed the Bobo to her new employer’s room. She was curious as to Bobo’s sudden change of attitude when she found out that Gillian is Mr Chen’s secretary but she dare not ask. With her heart beating fast, she walked in to the room. She could not see his face as he had his back against her but figured that he would be just another old, haggard man. To her shock, he is none other than the boy at the beach. How can a man so young hold such a high post in such a big company?
Ed: Hello. We meet again.
Gill: *thinks* Great! I’m actually working under the person I’m suppose to stay away from?
Gill: Umm…hello Mr Chen.
Ed: Just call me Edison or Ed for short.
Gill: *uneasily* I’m err…Gillian but you can call me Gill.
Ed: You saw the fight didn’t you?
Gill: *nods* But you don’t have to explain
Ed: No way! I’m not going to leave a bad impression on you! That was my brother…well, not through blood relationship. I was adopted.
Gill: Really, you don’t have to explain
Ed: *ignores her* We don’t get along really well. You know sibling’s rivalry and all that…
Gill: *appears uninterested* Yeah. So what am I suppose to do? I mean, work.
Ed: Oh, just look through these files for me. Thanks *hands her the files* Your table is right in front of my room. Happy working!
Gill: Thanks
Ed: *thinks* She sure is one intense chick!
Gill: By the way, you better take care of that cut on your cheek.
Bingo! Despite her arrogant attitude, Edison always knew that Gillian had the other angelic and softhearted side. He had seen that side of her before and he is determining to bring it out of her again. Again fate had brought them together. Edison’s previous secretary had resigned because she’s getting married soon. When Edison looked through the resumes, one name immediately caught his attention and it was none other than Gillian’s.
*During lunch*
Ed: Gillian, want to go out for lunch together?
Gill: No, thank you.
Ed: But why?
Gill: I’m going out with Cecilia and Vivian.
Ruby: *giggles* You can join us if you want
Vivian: *smiles shyly* Yeah, it would be cool
Gillian could only shake her head in disgust when she looks at the girls. They were practically worshipping the ground that Edison walks on. She had made friends with some of the girls in the office and everyone excluding her, has a crush on Edison. That was why Bobo turned cold towards her. She was jealous that Gillian had the chance to work closer with Edison. She couldn’t understand them because to her, he is nothing but an ordinary guy. Perhaps it was because the pain in her heart that has not healed and will never heal. Thus she came up with her own conclusion that Edison is nothing more than another playboy.
Ed: Well, that sounds good
Cecilia: Great! *batters her eye lash at him*
Vivian: You must treat us a meal, okay?
Ed: Sure! No problem!
Gill: *coldly* You guys go ahead without me then
Ed: But why?
Gill: I no longer have the appetite to eat
Ed: As your boss, I’m going to demand you to go for a lunch
Gill: You can’t do that!
Ed: Don’t question me on what I can or cannot do. Plus you need all the energy to ensure that your work performance is good.
Gill: But….
Ed: Another but from you and you’re fired!
Gill: *sighs* Fine. Let’s go for lunch then.
That made Gillian hates Edison even more. Who do he think he is? She so wanted to scream back at him and just walked off. However, she couldn’t because she needed the job badly. Her whole family is counting on her. As much as she hated it, she had no choice but to go out for lunch with him. It was in fact a torture watching both Cecilia and Vivian going all over him. Still, she felt weird that Edison seems to be oblivious to all that attention. He seems not to know that he is in fact popular and good-looking.
Halfway through their meal, Cecilia and Vivian saw some friends and decided to move over to their table, leaving Edison and Gillian on their own. Gillian felt a little uneasy when they’re alone and the silence was torturing the both of them. However, Gillian simply refused to be the first to speak.
Ed: How long are you going to keep silent?
Gill: As long as you
Ed: You know for a girl as sweet as you to be this cold…it’s really a pity
Gill: It’s none of your business
Ed: Can you please tell me why you hate me so much? What did I ever do to you?
Gill: I don’t hate you
Ed: Then why are you being so cold towards me?
Gill: That’s just me. I’m not going to fall on my knees and worship you like Ruby and Vivian.
Ed: *laughs* Oh no, they didn’t!
Gill: Come on! They’re giggling like little girls whenever they see you! They worship you because you’re every girl’s dream….*quickly adds* except mine, of course.
Ed: *laughs* Boy, were you quick to add that! Well, guess that makes the two of us.
Gill: Huh?
Ed: I don’t think I’m every girl’s dream. I’m just another ordinary guy on the streets
Gill: *rolls up her eyes* Ed, you can save all those flirtatious words for other girls. They’re not going to work on me
Ed: But I…
Gill: *cuts in* It’s over lunchtime anyway. I’m going back to the office. See you
Ed: But I can fetch you back
Gill: It’s only a block away. I can walk, thank you. You wait for Ruby and Cecilia. Bye
With that, Gillian walks off, leaving Edison in a daze. This girl really has some attitude problems. However, that doesn’t discouraged Edison from pursuing her. He couldn’t understand why she is always thinking that he is flirting with her when in actual fact all he wanted was to be her friend. Well, of course he wanted to be more than friends but he was saving that for the future. Heaving a deep sigh, he signaled Cecilia and Vivian and drove them back to the office.
Ed: *thinks* I’ll be patient. I’m sure one day you’ll be able to open the door to your heart again. And when you do, I promise you that I’ll give you all the love in the world. *sighs* I just hope that when you find out the truth, you’ll be able to forgive me.
