~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eun Suh has many dreams and it is those dreams that make up who she is today. It is with those dreams that had carried her on so far. Of course, sometimes she doubts her dreams but she always held on the belief that nothing is impossible as long as you put your heart into it. She came from a broken family, living only with her mother. Her mother who had given up all her dreams just to raise Eun Suh up. That was the reason why Eun Suh loves her mother dearly and opted to work several part time jobs so that she need not burden her mother with her college fees. Her life basically revolves only around working and studying. She never gets to enjoy what other girls her age would because she had no time and no money to. Still, she never sees that as a disadvantage but rather as a blessing from God. Perhaps God has greater plans for her and Eun Suh is sure that one of them included that promise she made 18 years ago. A promise made so long ago and yet had stayed in her mind ever since that fateful day. She was only six years old and that incident still haunts her till this very day.
18 years ago, Eun Suh was the happiest girl on earth because she is blessed with a wonderful family. Her parents loved her and the twins, Eun Ju and Jin-Seok, looked up to her. Eun Suh has always been protective of the twins because she adores them. However, things took for a change when their parents’ relationship fell out. Their parents would always quarrel; leaving Eun Suh to console her sister and brother as they sat huddled in a corner of their room. Although she was scared herself, she always manages to put up a brave front in front of the twins. However, their nightmare became a reality when their father woke them up one morning.
*Flashback*
Father: Sweetie, pack your things as well as the twins’. Get the twins ready too. We’re leaving.
Eun Suh: Huh? Where are we going?
Father: *smiles* Somewhere far away. Hurry up, okay?
Eun Suh: Okay, Father.
Eun Suh packs their bags and got the twins ready as quickly as she could. They went downstairs to see their father waiting for them. However, Eun Suh began to suspect something amiss when they did not see any signs of their mother. When their father took their bags outside, Eun Suh quickly ran up to see her mother. She was shocked to see her still sleeping soundly on the bed. Didn’t her mother know that they’re leaving?
Eun Suh: Mother! Mother! Wake up!
Mother: *rubbing her eyes* What is it, Eun Suh?
Eun Suh: You have to get ready quick! We are leaving soon!
Mother: *shocked* Leaving? To where?
Eun Suh: I don’t know. Father asked us to pack our bags…
Mother: Oh my! No! He can’t do this to me! He can’t!
Eun Suh: *confuse* Mother?
Mother: No matter what, don’t follow your father! Where…where are the twins?
Eun Suh: They are downstairs with Father….
Her mother jumped up from her bed and ran downstairs. At first, Eun Suh could not understand the whole scenario but it began to sink it slowly. Their father had no intention to bring their mother along; he was planning to leave her behind. Their relationship has fallen out and instead of love; it was filled with only hatred. Eun Suh’s heart broke when her mother fell down onto her knees, begging their father not to take the children away. The twins were crying as their father scoop them up and held on to them tightly.
Mother: *cries* Please! Don’t take my children away! You know I can’t live without them! Please!
Father: You brought this onto yourself, lady. I’m not stupid enough to leave my children to you! Tell me, how are you going to support them?
Mother: *sobs* I’ll work hard. I’ll do anything but please…please, don’t take them away from me! I beg of you! Take everything you want but please, don’t take my children!
Father: Eun Suh! Quick! We have to go now…
Mother: *holds on to Eun Suh* No! I’m not letting her go!
Eun Ju: Jie! Me scared!
Jin-Seok: Me too!
Eun Suh: *cries* Father, please!
Father: Get in the car now, Eun Suh!
Mother: No! You stay where you are, Eun Suh! What happened to us was between us! Why do you have to involve our children in this? You have no right to take my children away from me!
Father: I am their father and I have every right! I'm not leaving my children to suffer poverty with you! You gave me no other choice. Come on, Eun Suh…
Eun Suh: I…
Eun Ju & Jin-Seok: *sobs* Jie!
Eun Suh was torn in between two as she looks from her father to her mother. She loves them both and to choose between them simply broke her heart. Although she was only six years old then, she knew that her mother needed her the most. She couldn’t do leave her mother alone and thus, with a heavy heart she chose to remain behind. She was devastated to be separated from the twins but she was left with no other choice.
Eun Suh: I can’t leave Mother alone. I’m sorry
Father: Are you sure this is what you want?
Eun Suh: Yes.
Father: *softly* Well then, you be a good girl, okay?
Eun Suh: *hugs him* I promise. *to the twins* Don’t worry, we’ll see each other soon.
Eun Ju: Promise?
Eun Suh: *sobs* Of course. Even if it takes me forever, I’ll find you guys. Nothing could separate us.
Jin-Seok: You find us, jie! Love you!
Eun Suh: *smiles through her tears* I love you too. Both of you.
Mother: *tearfully* Please! Don’t take the twins away! Please! *hugs and kisses the twins*
Eun Ju & Jin-Seok: We love you, mommy!
Father: *scoops up the twins again* Take care of yourself okay, Eun Suh sweetie?
Eun Suh: *nods* Father, can you not go?
Father: I have to. I’m sorry. I really didn’t want to put you guys through this….I love you, Eun Suh. Be happy always okay? You’re always daddy’s favourite little girl…
Eun Suh: Goodbye.
Father: Goodbye.
Eun Ju & Jin-Seok: Jie! We don’t want to go! Miss you!
Eun Suh: *takes out her rings* Grandma gave me this rings….Together they make up a star. I want each of you to take one and always keep it close to your hearts. Whenever you miss me, just take out this ring.
Eun Ju: *innocently* And you will appear?
Eun Suh: *smiles* Yes but you might not be able to see me because I’ll be appearing right here *points to their hearts*
Jin-Seok: *giggles* Jie is in my heart!
Eun Suh: Take care of daddy for me, okay? Jie will take care of Mommy for you. Don’t cry anymore.
Eun Ju & Jin-Seok: Okay! Promise you will find us?
Eun Suh: Promise.
Father: *tearfully* Thank you, girl. You’re truly a special little girl. Thank you. I’ll always love you, remember that.
Eun Suh: I love you too.
Mother: *cries* Eun Ju! Jin-Seok!
Eun Suh: *softly* We’ll get them back. I promise you.
Eun Suh held on to her heart-broken mother as they watched the car drove away. That was the last time Eun Suh saw her father and the twins. Her mother was devastated but she was relieved that she still has Eun Suh beside her. Till today, Eun Suh never knew the real reason behind the fallout of their parents' relationship. Their life took a turn drastically as they were soon forced to leave the house and rent a smaller place. They once lived in a mansion but now; they’re both only able to afford a single room. Her mother had to work doubly hard and the neighbours all gave her a hard time, knowing that she was once a rich man’s wife. She was taunted and humiliated but she never gave up, knowing that she still has Eun Suh. At first, her father did send them some money and Eun Suh was always looking forward to his letters because they include Eun Ju and Jin-Seok’s drawings. Although they were just doodling, Eun Suh was proud of them. After all, you can’t expect a three year old to write you a letter. However, the letters stopped once her father got remarried. All Eun Suh knew is that the letter came from…..
*End of Flashback*
Eun Suh was jolted from her thoughts when her friend shook her. Suddenly, she realized that she is still in the classroom. However, everyone was standing up and clapping….clapping for her. Is this some kind of joke? Did the lecturer found out that she was daydreaming and decided to embarrass her? After all, this is Mr Song’s class and he is famous or doing all sorts of stunts in class. She looked blankly at her classmates and stood up slowly, not knowing what was going on. Everyone started congratulated her and Eun Suh could only manage a smile because she seriously was lost. She looked curiously at her best friend, Jun Mei.
Jun Mei: *laughs* Why do you look so blank? You won!
Eun Suh: Huh? What did I win?
Jun Mei: The scholarship!
Eun Suh: What scholarship?
Mr Song: Seriously, Miss Eun Suh. Don’t you dare go daydreaming in my class again!
Eun Suh: *blush* Sorry, Mr Song.
Mr Song: You’re forgiven. I’m not in the mood to be angry either. I guess you didn’t hear me back then. *sighs* I’ll just have to repeat it again. Congratulations! You’ve beaten all the odds and emerge as the top student in our college. Ms Eun Suh, you won the scholarship to Hong Kong!
Eun Suh: *surprise* I…I…did?
Mr Song: Congratulations! Make our college proud, okay? Mr Chang will give you further details after class. See him in the meeting room by 3pm.
Eun Suh: *blush* Thank you.
Eun Suh had to slap herself a few times to make sure that she is not dreaming and when the truth finally sink it, she broke down into happy tears. She had worked so hard to win this scholarship and all her efforts finally paid off. She knew it wasn’t a coincidence when her college offered a scholarship to study in Hong Kong because Eun Suh saw this as a sign. A sign that will bring her closer to her dreams. Yes, the last letter from her father came from Hong Kong. Thus, her only hope to find her siblings is in Hong Kong. She is going to fulfill her promise to her siblings as well as to her mother; she is going to reunite this family again. Her dreams were once in darkness but now, she is beginning to see sunshine in it.
Jun Mei: You did it! You really did it!
Eun Suh: *smiles* Yes. I really did!
Jun Mei: *chuckles* A poor Korean girl going to Hong Kong to find her siblings? Anyone would have laughed their heads off if you’ve told them in the past….It was after all an impossible task and yet….
Eun Suh: *cuts in* That’s why I’ve only told you.
Jun Mei: Well, who’s laughing at who now? You’ve proved them all wrong! You did it, girl! You are going to Hong Kong! Congratulations, Eun Suh. You certainly deserve it. I hope you’ll be able to find Eun Ju and Jin-Seok soon!
Eun Suh: *smiles* Me too. Me too.
Eun Suh was excited and yet she was also nervous. She hasn’t seen the twins for so long now, would they even remember her? Worst of all, would she be able to find them? After all, Hong Kong is big and she had nothing to guide her to their whereabouts. No address, no phone number…Nothing. All she had was a Hong Kong stamp on the envelope that includes her father’s last letter. The only clue that can help her is the rings that she had given to the twins but then…how many similar rings such as those are there? And her mother….who is going to take care of her when she is gone? She heaved a deep sigh as she thought about all the possibilities. She was too excited when she first heard of the scholarship that she never thought of all the possibilities. None of it had never crossed her mind before.
*During lunch break*
Jun Mei: You seem awfully quiet for a girl who has just gotten a scholarship!
Eun Suh: *smiles* I’m okay….
Jun Mei: I know what you’re worrying about…it’s your mother isn’t?
Eun Suh: How did you…
Jun Mei: I’m your best friend, remember? Don’t worry okay? You can leave her to me!
Eun Suh: Huh?
Jun Mei: *smiles* Your mother is like my own mother, Eun Suh. I practically grew up with you! I will drop in whenever I can to see her okay? She’ll be fine, I’ll make sure of that.
Eun Suh: *touched* You would do that for me?
Jun Mei: Oww! Don’t get all touchy again, girl! It’s no problem! After all, we live next door only! I’m sure my parents too, will lend help in a heartbeat! Remember how your mother saved my brother from the roof?
Eun Suh: That was so long ago!
Jun Mei: We’re grateful and we’ll forever be. She saved a life that day. Now, don’t argue with me okay? Go to Hong Kong and find your siblings. Bring them back and make your mother happy. You finally have the chance to live your dreams, Eun Suh. Not many have the opportunity. Appreciate what you have.
Eun Suh: *hugs her* Thank you. You’re truly my angel! I’m going to find them even though it’ll be like finding for a needle in a haystack!
Jun Mei: *laughs* You’ll find them. I’m sure of it. Just have faith in yourself.
Eun Suh: You’re the best, Jun Mei! Thanks for giving me back my determination!
Jun Mei: You’re welcome. You’ve come this close already, don’t ever give up! Remember to write and tell me about all your adventures in Hong Kong!
